if i get a solid state drive, is their an easy way to transfer the info from the 1 HD to the other with out reinstalling everything?? i ask because there is a SSD on sale at new egg right now and i was considering it because its 60 gig instead of 30

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...GNEFL021110-_-SolidStateDisk-_-L0B-_-20227461

right now my HD is 80 gig, but i only use it for the OS and drivers+information that applications need to install there

(i know its sold out, but this just got me thinking about getting an SSD)

IIRC, it's usually best to do a fresh install of Windows 7 (assumption) on a SSD to make sure that TRIM support is enabled in the OS. Cloning a hard drive to a SSD doesn't work out too well.

so if i got one, i would have to reinstall every program correct? also how would windows treat my activation key because it is being reinstalled?

If you're just upgrading the HDD/SSD, then it should not require you to re-activate. If so, you'll most likely just need to call it in.

WPA has changed a bit since XP, but this is a good article to give you a good idea of whats going on with regards to activation:

I'm so glad the agility is sold out... would tempt me too much, lol.

If you are running a hard disk drive along with the SSD do you need to have the OS on both drives?

no a SSD is a new type of storage device

it would replace the harddrive

The SSD would be used for a boot drive so it would need an OS, but If you are using a larger drive, say 1TB. for storing data , files, and a collection of games, would it also need an OS?

no

I would recommend a 60gb ssd at least due to the fact that other apps will need room to install small portions of themselves onto the os drive. also i put all my drivers on my os drive. as far as documents and stuff, the default settings will put the "libraries " folders into the os drive. you can simply change their directory to another drive and folder. also the 60 gb can be useful for installing games and stuff you want to run faster than it could on the HD

uhhhgg..... lol ok thats a big deterrent then. it would take me days to get everything re set up and installed

Considering how much faster that SSD would be over your HD, it wouldn't take as long as you'd think to reinstall. :p

Actually, it's back in stock now :p

HA!!! lol wow thx for pointing that out

see the main reason i really am not wanting to do it is i'd have to redue my itunes playlists. that would take ages.... lol

but no im really temped. if its there in a couple days.... lol

ok well now that you have me looking at it again, how do i make sure trim is enabled?

why would you have to redo your playlists?

just make sure you have the latest firmware from ocz. and dont forget to leave your comp idle for a few hours every now and then, lol.

lol mocking me? =D dude my playlists on iTunes are intense!! took me about 2 days to reset them when i built this computer. o and btw im getting a zune as soon as my ipod dies

i hate iTunes and how apple controls it... you can only unauthorize your active accounts once a year and there is no easy transfer of your information. you have 3 times to transfer all your music from your ipod to a computer before you can never do it again

That's why most of us stay far away.

There's nothing that iTunes has that I can't get somewhere else and if there was, I wouldn't need it. ;)

Get the SSD and transfer your list really quick! :D

others might be intersted so ill post it here:

the first time you plug in your ipod to a new computer or itunes, it will ask you if you want to copy everything from your ipod to the computer. if you say yes, it will say you have two more times to copy everything.

lol i made a deal with myself. im trying to sell a front and rear sway bar on craigs list. if someone buys them and the SSD is still on sale, then i will buy it. if not then i wont lol

uh, no, but you could simply export all your playlists and the entire library and import them. google has a bunch of hits on the subject. i may not have an ipod, but having to re-do playlists simply because of a new computer is just illogical to me. (eg. kadavy.net/blog/posts/transfer-itunes-library/)
