So I won a free nvidia gtx 470 at quakecon a few days ago. I'm trying to figure out how much it will cost to build a new rig using this gpu. my current computer is old and no longer cutting it. looking for medium range parts i guess. about a $650 budget. Is this do-able? Or would i be better off just selling the card and waiting till more money rolls in down the road?

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Gaming/Photoshop/Reason
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$650 not including shipping/tax, not including monitor
3) Where do you live?
San Angelo, TX --- No Microcenter
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
cpu, mobo, ram, power supply, case, fan -- New O/S if Vista 32 bit is a joke
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Western Digital 640gb 7200rpm
Nvidia GTX 470 (Free!)
6) Will you be overclocking?
Yes
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
Planning on getting new montior -- not sure what. Something HD like this maybe.
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
No major time crunch. Was considering waiting till black friday sales
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
I can't think of any features needed
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If so, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?
Vista 32bit / and windows xp 32bit

Id consider upgrading OS to 64bit. For a bit of future proofing. It also helps with big photos, and the 470 is going to eat 1.2gb of memory leaving you with only 2.8gb availible for the system. I think MS is doing the student discount at the moment so if you're a student/have relatives who are students you can get this cheap.

but another reason user! finally! People with decent software!

Ok groovy. Probably just grab win7 64 bit then. and yeah, reason has a nasty learning curve but looks so bad ass when you know whats going on

Is there a prime time to buy PC parts? In my head i'm thinking sale times like black friday or christmas sales, but i've never shopped the pc market heavily before.

Usually Fridays as thats when some of the better deals popup. The last few years on Black Friday haven't yielded that many decent PC parts deals. Some Christmas sales are ok. But generally, you can get decent deals on parts year round. It's pretty much down to luck of the draw.

The release of new stuff sometimes drives down the price of the last generation. Not always true however, I picked up a GTX 260 for 30% less than the month before when the GTX 400s were about to come out.

Reason is great for using out the box! Just stick a load of instruments down and your good to go! The more complex stuff can get a little complicated, but thankfully the visual routing does make everything alot simpler and makes everything in plain sight, and the lack of latency and midi controls mean it's great for live performances too! I've used loads of DAW programs before and none of them are as instinctive, nor have as good make your own synth options (possibly reaktor is better but it fails at user friendly or making sense and uses alot more CPU) I like running the CV/Gate controls through the combinators so the controls actually move! I just run the SPDIF into a KORG KM mixer and it sounds amazing! If theres anything you get stuck on I am kind of obsessed with the program (and have been for years) so if you need help with stuff ill be more than happy to help haha.
