Push-Pull on Hyper 212+

Right now I am just running my Hyper 212+ with a fan in push. I have an extra fan that I want to use on the heatsink also. I don't want to run them both at full speed all the time and would like to leave the stock one hooked up to the 4 pin header and the other is a 3 pin. Would it be better to put the 4pin one in push or pull? Or would it be better to just leave the 2nd one off since they would be mismatched? Also, am I correct that if I put a 3pin on the 4 pin header it will just run at fullspeed all the time?
 
I am working from memory here - I believe that board has "legacy" CPU fan speed as an option. That will make the 4 pin pwm CPU fan header act as the old style voltage controlled header effectively making it a 3 pin. You could then wire both fans to the header (a 3 pin Y adapter is available if you do not want to cut and splice the wires). Fan speed would then be controlled by the on the motherboard CPU temp sensor.

Yes most 4 pin fans when plugged into a 3 pin header will run at 100% (a few will not run at all or you need to ground the PWM wire so nothing is for absolute sure)

The pushing fan is going to be doing most of the work as the pull fan already is having air shot at it. Hmm thinking about which way would be best in theory makes my head hurt. It should take a 10 mins to try both ways at idle and at load while recording temps and making a note of the noise. Test it out and let us know what you think is best/works for you. oh and don't forget to record what is happening with just one fan. it could be that turns out the best, unlikely but you need a baseline to compare the other configurations to anyway.

Edit: there is a very remote chance the "sys" fan header would follow the cpu header, adjust voltage based on cpu temp, some board will do that. I do not think yours is one but some testing would tell and then you could avoid having to splice wires or get the Y adapter if that header is unused.
 
Thanks for the suggestions. Looking at the motherboard manual (not at home now), I don't see any kind of option for something like "legacy" cpu fan speed. However, something like that sounds like exactly what I am looking for.

I will try them out in different configurations and see what the results are. I can always hook up the 2nd fan to my fan controller to keep it from being too noisy. Also, looking at the manual I noticed one of the sys_fans is a 4pin header, but it marks one of the pins as a 5V, opposed to the rest as 12V. Will this header run a 3 pin fan at 5V, lowering the rpm?
 
The 2nd fan I tried was case fan that came with my CM690, attached with zip tie (closed corners) and ran it at full speed. With that as the full one it did nothing for the temps. Idle may have gone up slightly (seem inaccurate anyways) but the load temp stayed exactly the same at 65C. Not sure its worth messing with switching the fans since this did nothing at all.

I may try pushing my OC more once I put new paste on the Nb cooler, so I may try this again after that.
 
I have this 'tractor' configuration on my I7-920, also with a Hyper212+. I used the stock fan to pull and an Antec tricool to pull from the heatsink and push rearward. It works very well...just bear in mind to check the airflow on both fans for direction. I've seen guys hang these fan and mistakenly put the airflow opposite each other. You should have seen a slight drop of about 3-5 additional degrees with the second fan...all things being the same.
