Pump Noise

Hey all,

So the pump noise on my D5 Vario built into my XSPC Photon 270 D5 combo is starting to bug me.

I originally got the D5 because people on the forums essentially described it as inaudible. Well, it isn't inaudible to me. It has a deep resonant humming sound. Not loud by any means, but enough to be audible and annoying. I have gutted things over lesser noise in the past.

Here is a video trying to show the level of noise I get out of it. The fans in this video are running at 560rpm, which from previous experience I know makes them inaudible to me. I also have no spinning discs in the case, so I know all the noise is from the pump.

Wait for finger nail tap on case at 13s for sound level comparison.

1.) I mounted it using XSPC's included mounting hardware, by drilling holes in the motherboard tray and screwing it in. Their hardware included two thick foam pads for noise isolation. The flaw in this design seems to be that the screws still make contact. Maybe it would make sense to put some rubber bushings around them?

2.) In the video the pump is running at setting 5 (the highest). Do you guys think I really need the highest setting for adequate flow? I have two radiators (Alphacool 45mm thick 420mm and Alphacool 86mm thick Monsta 280. I also have an EK Supremacy EVO CPU block and an EK Full Cover GPU block. The loop has two 90 degree bends it, but routing is generally pretty short and efficient (pic below)

3.) Any other recommendations for minimizing the pump noise?

Is this level of pump noise even normal? I was a little bit surprised after how many people described the D5 as perfectly silent and inaudible in my research. Could I have a bad unit?

Need moar volume. Are the fans on or off? I hear some random clicking and a general hum.

Rubber bushings. It can make a big difference. Give that a try, can usually find some at the hardware store for cheap. I had a similar situation with a PMP200 (it wasn't mounted in a radiator, it was an external pump), and it would make a lot of noise mounted to the case, but once I set it on some rubber washers, it quieted down significantly. Make sure not to overtighten the bolts as well.

The tubing won't transfer much noise, if any at all. The pump will always make a little noise, but most of that that you hear (i think) is vibration being transfered through the case.

I had my D5 mounted using one of the EK backets and noticed that it was still pretty noisy in my case. I got ahold of the Phobya Noise Destructor kit from TitanRig on Amazon and used the sticky pads to attach the D5 bracket and the other sticky part to attach to my case and that cut down on noise dramatically. Full speed is barely audible to me from about 2 feet . I normally run it at ~2500 RPM since my temps stay good and the pump is inaudible to me at that speed. Mine does have some weirdness between 2.8k and 3.5k where it is pretty noisy, much noisier than full speed.

LOL...I just used the bubble-wrap my D5 came in as a mute. Have it running full-throttle and I don't hear it with 1850RPM Gentle Typhoons undervolted to 5V

my d5 definitely hums, but with the two front 140mm fans it's barely noticeable (the pump is mounted to the side panel of my haf xb evo using an ek revo mount).

For yours, I'd try the bushings, and/or maybe apply some noise absorption foam to the back of the mb tray or the panel behind it.

My D5 is mounted with velcro. The type with some glue on both sides. Like double stick tape, but removable.

The velcro killed all the noise for me, And it is extremely handy to work on, just rip and replace. :)

This is a good idea, actually, but the rubber bushings around the screws is what I'd have tried next.

The Velcro is probably the easiest solution, though.

My D5 pump hummed quite a bit too, until I changed to a different top (similar to the EK D5 top) and mounted it on some gel based pad.
