Hello everyone. I am about to purchase my first console game system in a long time.Im really cant figure out which one to get. Both the playstation and xbox are going for 299.00 now so i thought i would jump in. I mostly play fps and sport games. I dont really need the bluray player but it would be nice to have. i have a panasonic 50 inch hd tv, so i think a console would be cool. Anyway i have done much research, and would go xbox except for all the reliability issues.I heard the libary of games is much bigger for xbox but sony is cathing up. anyway any comments or suggestions are appreciated

search the forum for the four hundred times this question has been posted before. Nothing has changed.

This question has been asked approximately 14.3 billion times on this forum and usually ends in retarded fanboyism. It's all personal preference in the end or you could do what I did and get both.

Thanks but cant afford both! I did reseach, but many were old threads with ps3 at 399.00 price point. I think i will go with ps3. I read that you have to buy a seperate recharger for xbox controller, is that true?

Yeah, you can buy xbox controllers with the play&charge kit included, but it costs a little extra. The other things to consider are the online fees for a slightly more robust social network (XBOX) vs the free online play and built in wireless adapter of the PS3.

I went with PS3 a while back and I enjoy it a lot. I think if I had the money I might have bought both. I need wireless though and $300 for the xbox + $50 for a year of live gold + $100 for the wireless adapter +$20 for a play and charge kit was just too much of an initial outlay.

I'd go for PS3. It comes with everything needed to start up and game right away - except for install times.

360 needs the wireless adapter....... Live.........

The PS3 library is just insane now with Uncharted 2 and Demon's Souls.........those 2 games alone are worth the purchase.

i have the ps3, wii, and xbox 360. I prefer the xbox of all 3. It sucks you have to pay for online service, but it is more mature and better (although the ps3 network is getting better). I find it a lot easier to find matches online for the 360 as well. I will say Uncharted 2and MGS 4 on the ps3 kicks ass. Dont forget youll have to pick up a bluetooth headset for you ps3 if you dont already have one where the xbox elite comes with a wired headset that works well.

I have a 360 and ps3 and recently sold my wii. unless you know a ton of people on xbox live that you want to game with, get a ps3. you get more hardware for you dollar (wireless, rechargable controlleler, blu ray...) plus you can use any laptop hds, free online play, and it works with any bluetooth keyboard and headset you may have or want to buy. also the 360 controller dpad is a joke so if you are into games like street fighter IV, get ready to buy an aarcade stick. heck you have 50 inch tv, time to watch some blu rays on that!

the 360 elite is a shitty value for 299. multiplatform games are about even on the ps3 or xbox, and the ps3 gets better exclusives (unless you have a boner for gears of war and halo sequels). people saying the 360 has a better game library are full of shit. the 360 has more total games because its been out for longer, that's about it. if someone breaks into my house and steals a console, I hope they take the xbox.

Every single game I've ever seen on both platforms works better on Xbox 360 - The xbox 360 games 'generally' look better (all have AA (no jaggies)) and run smoother.

I have all three current gen consoles. My Xbox gets the most use by far. The PS3 constantly is updating with 10 minute patches that do nothing, same with my PSP -- I hate that!!! --- all games need to be installed which is a really slow process (ughhhhh- I had one game with a 2 hour install (eye of judgement). Xbox updates are measured in seconds and there is no game install. The online exp. is pathetic with PS3 compared to Live (you can buy a live 12 month card for $30 on ebay - so less than $3 a month isn't that big a deal). The arcade games are polished on 360 compared to PS3 PSN games where frame rate/emulation issues often abound (IE Rampart). For every PS3 exclusive there are just as good Xbox exclusives. Gears of War series, *cough* Halo series, Blue Dragon, Kameo, Left for Dead, all the sports titles run a lot better on the 360 --- check out most any comparison in that arena. Valve may not make any future titles on the PS3. This is subjective, but most people think the controller is better on the Xbox 360. Some of the things they are doing with the avatars is actually finally getting a little cooler. 1 vs. 100 with avatars makes the game a lot better than if it was just random people. The avatars are typically custimized to look like you and so you get a sense of the real people you are playing with.

That being said the PS3 has blu-ray which is worthwhile. Also the PS3 exclusives like MotorStorm, Little Big Planet, and God of War seem to have exceptionally nice graphics because they were designed from the ground up to take advantage of the hardware, whereas the other multiplatform games are typically ports from the 360 and so typically run and look worse on the PS3. Nearly all cross platform games are better played on the 360 due to better frame rates, less jaggies, and the online abilities of Live - not to mention achievements are a much better concept than trophies. Check out metacritic for this verification. Even the new multiplatform games I've tried play significantly better on the 360. Star Wars - Force Unleashed, The Bigs 2, and several other demo titles I've downloaded play way better on the 360 - - not sure why at this point in the timeline Sony is still allowing this to happen?? Sony may have dug themselves into a hole. Microsoft has all the Live fees of millions of gamers to make their product continually better. And in my opinion Live does keep on getting better so it is evident they are re-investing those fees into the system. Sony critisized Microsoft for making people pay for Live, but their online exp. is very poor compared to the Live exp. As it turned out --- lots of people aren't opposed to paying for live and with Live just getting better and better - I think Sony is fighting an uphill battle.

I'm not disastisified with my PS3, I just believe that for a gaming console - the Xbox 360 is a lot better system. Every single one of my friends that has both Xbox 360 and PS3 agrees that the Xbox 360 system is clearly the winner this gen.

All have both and think the Xbox360 is a much better "gaming" console.

The 360 does have a MUCH bigger game library despite the above poster. Who cares if it's been out longer when you are looking to play games and there is a much bigger library of games on one console and the vast majority of multiplatform games play better on that same console (360)- whats the rub? $3 a month? Forfeit a McDonald's hamburger one day a month and enjoy the better 'gaming' console.

Archaea...

Anyhow, I got one (xbox360), because all (I am NOT kidding...) my friends do, too. The PS3 was also more expensive, at the time. Not interested in 'price breakdowns' as I simply didn't care for any but the console itself.

Didn't buy any games for it yet, though.

I have both consoles and to say, I enjoy playing both but I would recommend getting the 360. you get a free month of live with the machine its self, then look online for a year pass for around 35 or 40. The Playstaion network can't hold stick compared to xbox live...even though its free, it is alot slower and hard to find matches compared to xbox live.

Jeremy - PM me your gamertag. I'll add you to my friends list.

Decide for yourself. We can't tell you what you want.

This. You know what games you like and what you'll do with it.

But generally the 360 is for "gamers" and the PS3 is for those who want a media center.

pretty much hit the nail on the head!

Unless you're friends all have 360's and you really want to play with them
Playstation 3
the library of games is much better.

I'd say this, but right now the 360 has a better selection of RPGs. Demon's Souls did a whole lot to bridge the gap though.

Two years ago I would have said 360, now I have to say PS3. Between the new pricetag, Blu Ray, the revamp to the interface, and the current and upcoming games it has, its an pretty easy choice unless you must play Gears and Halo. Everything else is cross-platform and the PS3 has amazing exclusives right now. Uncharted 2 is probably going to be my GOTY and is easily one of the best games this console generation.

I agree. Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls, Heavy Rain is coming, Mass Effect 2??, FFXIII, etc etc

Hey look, it's still going. We're at the list wars part of the thread. Incoming counter list wars, then discussion from each side why the list of the other isn't listworthy.

These threads belong on n4g or gamespot.

I've got both and prefer my PS3, controller is more comfortable to me too....

If you play a lot of online gaming then get whichever machine your buddys play online with, if you're not so much into online gaming then get whichever machine has the most enticing titles to you.

Bioware confirmed that Mass Effect 2 isn't coming to the PS3. Also, FF13 is also coming on the 360 (yes I know it's on multiple discs but it's still coming).

I'm still glad I have both systems anyway. :p

I bought a 360 to play with friends, but the majority of my games library is on the PS3.

I prefer the 360 online service by far over the PS3 fo a few reasons. Simplistic design, form and function, the amount of game nights and special events, and just an overall greater depth of multiplayer arcade games, exclusives, and the standard multiplayer games.

PS3 has far better exclusives though IMO, games like Uncharted 1 & 2, Demon Souls, Little Big Planet, Ratchet and Clank, Infamous, and the God of War series. Also you get more hardware for the buck with a PS3 and the somewhat better reputation when it comes to build quality.

Both systems have their merits and to be honest it comes down to 2 questions. Which games do you want to play and do your friends have said games.

Unless you are concerned with playing with friends who own a certain console, your best option is to go down the exclusives lists and figure out what games you would rather play. There really is no other objective answer.

I've linked them below:

This is how I made my decision. I don't really have many friends that play either console online much. I went with a PS3, since it has more exclusives I wanted. Most of the games I want to play are covered well with a PC and PS3.

This, even though I own a 360 too. My PC and PS3 are used the most.

If you have a good PC and/or need a blu-ray player than the choice is easy: PS3.

Most of the XBOX exclusives (Gears Of War, Mass Effect,...) are also available on the PC. Impatient gamers beware since there is usually a delay...
The story is different with the PS3. Exclusives games such as Uncharted 1 & 2, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Demon's Souls, Resistance 1 and 2, MSG4, ... are (and will) not be exported to the PC.

Xbox 360

Pros - More people have it, More Games/Titles, Fairly cheap now, games generally look better.

Downs - Pay to play online XBL, no HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. Stupid costly addons/expansions NEEDED to play.

PS3

Pros -, Blu-Ray, Cost now similar to 360, More games/titles (Not as many as 360 though.), free online play.

Cons - Less people online, Less games/titles.

Personally I would get a 360, but if the ps3 had the same/similar titles. PS3 all the way. I hate paying a yearly fee.
