PS3 folding = $$$electricity bill$$$

Another thing to consider is that article today about the PS3 supposedly being silent. Sure, there is the possibility that the Cell is really low power and doesn’t need a fan. I really doubt that though.

I think it is more likely that Sony sacrificed the longevity and reliability of the system to generate good publicity about the system being so quiet. Not only that, but they plan on marketing the unit as Home Theater equipment as well as a gaming rig, so quiet operation is important there.

Bottom line, I think the PS3 will not have adequate cooling. Probably some crappy aluminum block for the heatsink and a really low RPM fan. Plus, I bet there is inadequate airflow over the actual CPU heatsink…. Sorry.. I have always been disappointed with the thermal solutions in consoles.

Hehe I LONG for the days of $300 power bills. I think mine last month was about $650

 
Wow...that is seriously brutal, I think the total bill for our apartment (3 bedroom, two roommates and myself, all running TV's, computers, etc.) was only 50 bucks or thereabouts.

 
I'm sorry, but you know leaving that console on 24/7 is going to tank it.

I've watched many consoles of every variety eat dirt because they were left on constantly (a buddy of mine is a lazy junky)...2 Xbox's, a PSX, and 1 PS2 died outright and the other the laser took a shit...

Has anyone's PS3 died yet? Mine is still folding away.

 
Yep a little over 200 WU completed so far and mine is still going strong. With the exception of 2 marathon God of War bouts and about 15 BD movies it has folded pretty much nonstop. Of course my light bill hasnt gone down either.. And I am getting ready to hit the hot months where it jumps up to $800 or so :(

I think electricity wise, those 50 watt AMD dual cores look hella good.
 
Also consider using mobile processors. Less heat, less power. Save cash on the electric bill vs on the processor. Just understand that the unit will need to be in service for a while to get the cash back.

I agree with you.

If I am not mistaken, isn't the C2D a revamped Pentium-M (mobile) CPU?

i have been moving things to boxen to C2D's and retiring all my servers consolidating all the services they did to two dual quad core xeon machines
 
Who wants to send me their box for me to run during the summer. Free electricity here ;) yes, my electricity bill probably would have exceeded my monthly rent if I had to pay for electricity, but oh wells :D

You may want to bookmark this page. It has processor electrical specifications as supplied by the manufacturer listed all the way back to the 486 days. If you ignore the new, confusingly-named (shame on you, AMD) BE-2300 and BE-2350, both the AMD and Intel dual-core chips are all rated at 65W (X2 3600 through 5000 for AMD, 6300 through 6700 for Intel).

There are two caveats with this information, though. The first is that with such a range of chip frequencies, the lower-clocked chips are going to consume less power. So an E4300 is going to run cooler/cheaper than an E6700. Secondly, AMD's quoted power figures are maximum power consumption, whereas Intel's are "typical". (The official statement from Intel is "Thermal Design Power (TDP) should be used for processor thermal design targets. TDP is not the maximum power that the processor can dissipate." Shame on Intel.) In other words, for all the hype, X2s consume less power than C2Ds.
 
The way I see it, I'd rather spend a little more each month now in power bills by helping find a cure for a disease that will run you tens/hundreds of thousands in medical bills should you develop it later, or the pain of watching loved ones succumb to a deadly disease.

Setup your power bill on a auto-pay plan like I did and ignore it :D
I think you are under the mistaken impression that you will be given the `cure for cancer' for free, once it has been found. Please, let's not be naive. The difference between now and sometime in the future is the survival probability, not the cost.

I just have every system at my house folding when it's on AC power. My power comes from nuclear power, so I believe it's considered a renewable resource (or the equivelant of the opposite of a non-renewable resource)...if I understand nuclear power correctly.
Nuclear power is not a renewable source. In fact, there are no renewable sources. The problem isn't Energy (which is conserved in a closed systems) but rather entropy, which is non-increasing in a closed system.

actually nuclear fuel can be reprocessed... while while not infinately renewable the newer nuclear plant designs that will probably start being constructed within the forseeable future use this design... all of the nuclear power plants currently in operation in the united states are waaaayyyy beyond their initial expected lifetime... and we have learned a lot since 3 mile island and the such...

i hope the NRC gets it all sorted out becuase not building them is becoming a bigger problem...

i know that the nuclear plants down here are very close to running out of space for spent fuel... which is not good...

Don't forget that during the Three-mile Island meltdown, everything remained contained and there were no deaths or injuries.

The only reason they're running out of space for spent fuel is because reprocessing it is banned in the US due to "proliferation concerns". Yes, it is expensive to build a reprocessing facility. But it cuts down the radioactive half-life of the products from the oft-quoted 10,000 years to 300 years.

I've ranted at length on this topic before, so I'll stop here.

My own definition of renewable is to be able to create the energy using nature's forces like sun, wind or water opposed of using any form of fuel like charbon, nuclear or oil ;)
 
I agree that the solar energy is not renewable. But if the sun goes out, folding will be the least of my worries.

In short, the law of conservation of energy states that energy can not be created or destroyed, it can only be changed from one form to another
This is where the nice E-mc^2 comes from. In fusion/ fission reactions, mass is converted (key word) into energy according to the formula above.

If you want to take care of your ps3 dont play more than several hours a day and by several hours for me it would be 3-4 because you should rather be worrying about burning out the blu-ray drive and we all know how much those can cost to replace right?

But you will still need to run two of them to match to output of a single C2D.

Search this page for Brisbane, and you'll find a list of them. From 3600 to 5000, they're all rated as 65W, and the BE- ones (I've never seen them anywhere but this list) are listed at 45W.

Those are some good links! I really wonder about the second one there, though. An E4300 consuming only 21W under load? I know it's far from hot-running, but that just doesn't seem correct to me.
 
now that winter's here for those in north america folding is basically like turning on a space heater... all the excess heat is dumped in the room so you're not costing that much more.
 
I heat my garage with "folding heat"

I ran a series of PVC pipes to the PCs in my home office and hooked 'em all to large fan cieling mounted fan that dumps all the waste heat into the garage.

Works pretty well, Garage won't drop below about 55 in deep winter :)

Aren't integral fast reactors supposed to theoretically be able to produce more fuel than they consume?

As for reprocessing, like I know the japanese are big on PU-239 reactors, I believe the U.S. does not reprocess nuclear waste for commercial use which dates back to Reagan administration; the policy was put in place with the hopes that other countries would follow suite which they did not.
