Anyone know what the expected power requirements will be for the PS3? I know that letting my idle CPU cycles work on folding proteins never gets too high, but I for one know that my Xbox360 when left on consumes a serious amount of power. Any thoughts on leaving your console on all day will have on electricity bills??

the only thing i am worried about is the heat. gunna have to pop it open and add some fans or water kool it.

My 30 Ghz uses around 1.5 kw per hour, 32 kw per day or 1000 kw per month.
Also the price of the power here has gone up around 50% in the last 18 months.
So was around £80 a month and is now £120.

Well, given some of the discussion about the environment and energy conservation, I've read that there are people who have stopped folding specifically for this reason.
If I remember correctly, the logic was that you are basically funding research that you will end up having to pay for, yet, we are using non-renewable energy at an ever increasing rate.
Something to ponder.

and not only do the systems use power, the put off a lot more heat than they would otherwise (especially if they were off, like mine) and makes your AC run harder. As we all know, cooling is expensive...
desktop is almost never on anymore cause I like surfing on the couch.

The ps3 will add a few bucks a month to your bill tops. I would be more worried about it burning out because it overheats after running a few months straight.
Here's my view.... We are all doing this (folding) because we WANT to for one reason or another... Therefore, as far as I am concerned the expenses fall under the category of "hobby expenses". Other people may travel, other people may buy power tools, other people may buy dolls, other people may build hotrods, but I build computers to fold (and spend money on all the necessary accessories including power) and I derive enjoyment and satisfaction from doing so. Bottom line is that we all spend as much money on our hobbies as we are comfortable with--- and there is going to be a huge variation for individual circumstances... We should all remember this before dissing others for their choices....

Yeah, I have 2 core duo's T2700, a pentium m 750 and a pentium m 758 lv running at home as well. Damn if the T60p doesn't get hot though on your lap folding...
I just have every system at my house folding when it's on AC power. My power comes from nuclear power, so I believe it's considered a renewable resource (or the equivelant of the opposite of a non-renewable resource)...if I understand nuclear power correctly.

If you want to take care of your ps3 dont play more than several hours a day and by several hours for me it would be 3-4 because you should rather be worrying about burning out the blu-ray drive and we all know how much those can cost to replace right?

Considering the failure rate of the DVD drive in the PS2, I wouldnt put it beyond sony to have the drive fail due to heat... as sad as that is.ND40oz said:

I just installed the software on the computers at work, they are left on all the time any way so I'm not to worried about the hydro bill.
The question for me will be where do I get the best points for the buck.
ATI graphics cards? a game console?

I expect the blue ray drives in Sony consoles to be as bad as the DVD players in the XBox and the PS2. Notoriously crappy.

When my 360 fried last month, Micro$haft had me pull the HDD and mailed me a box. It took 6 days all told, but I had a new system with all my gamesaves and account info intact. Hopefully SONY will do the same.Strikemaster

I have actually been having to cut down on the machines at home, upgrading the slower ones or retiring them, i cant afford the $250~$300 power bills anymore...

I've watched many consoles of every variety eat dirt because they were left on constantly (a buddy of mine is a lazy junky)...2 Xbox's, a PSX, and 1 PS2 died outright and the other the laser took a shit...
