Prototype on PC

I've been playing this for the past few days. Everything is good but...

Every few minutes or so, the frame rate drops significantly from about 50-60 to 10-15. This causes really bad stuttering.

I'm almost certain that it's a problem with the game (and hopefully not my hardware).

I'm pretty well disappointed with Prototype. I've been playing it the last few days on the PC and I just can't help but feel like the developers really rushed this game. It's not a bad game exactly, but it really doesn't do anything particularly well. The missions become tedious after a while because you're quite often just doing the same thing you've done dozens of times before, i.e. go capture and consume 4 soldiers to unlock some such portion of the plot. Rinse, repeat. Or go jump off this one building and land in the center of some such area on the ground. Again, rinse and repeat. Though there are 4 of 5 different types of sub-missions they all feel exactly the same as the first one you do.

The combat feels really wonky when you're in an intense boss fight too. When you have multiple enemies coming at you it becomes difficult to target any one of them with precision. Overall I would recommend anyone interested in this game to wait till it hits the bargain bins. It's just not complete. Voice acting is pretty good though and the story ain't terrible. It's also fun to hijack helicopters out of the air, haven't gotten tired of that yet.

Infamous, now that is a gem of a game and a labor of love I think. If you want to feel like a hero/villain in a life-like city that takes the cake. As my popularity rose playing on the side of good people on the street would start running up to my character taking pictures, calling out his name. Conversely when you beat down or kill people everyone will run from you in terror on reputation alone.

These type of little touches would have made Prototype much better. When I come flying off a skyscraper and put a hole in the street, I want to see the NPCs react to it. Not just brush passed me like they have somewhere to be. It just isn't engrossing. Takes you right out of the moment and makes you remember that you're just playing a video game.

The best comparison I can think of is Infamous is akin to the GTA Series, vibrant and life-like, while Prototype is more like the Godfather games, kind of shallow and lifeless. Prototype is decent, but no one will be playing it a couple months from now.

If you have a PS3 play Infamous and skip Prototype. My 2 cents.

I agree with most of these criticisms and yet, overall, I find myself still having a hell of a fun time with this game nonetheless.

I agree. Infamous does "this" better than Prototype does, although the games are also different in some respects. They're like cousins of each other, if you will.

Infamous is good enough it's a system seller IMO. I'm glad I have a PS3. It's the kind game that PC only gamers should hope somehow gets ported to the PC some day.

Agreed. These are the kinds of polish and refinement issues that maybe another month or two of work could have really put the game over the top.

Probably true, although Prototype is a much better game than those Godfather games.

Or make Infamous the priority and get Prototype after a price drop.

Infamous is an awesome game. I love using my KBM but I don't mind the controls on that at all. I still would ideally prefer a KBM but I can get along pretty well Infamous as is.

I don't feel bad paying $50 for Prototype as is on the PC because I've really wanted something new to play and I'm having a hell of a fun time with it anyways.

People can do a lot worse with $50 than buying Prototype, all told.

Just finished a long playing session with both infamous and prototype at a friends house. I like both but infamous wins out in the end. Anyone else feel the controls on prototype are too loose?? Hell, I needed to hookup a gamepad to play it for more than 30 minutes; not to mention, the audio was kinda flaky when we first got it installed. It's a shame too because with a little bit more polish, care and attention to detail they could have made a good game, great.

Game runs great for me. But I get really low volume. I need to turn my speakers up at least twice the normal level to hear it well.

Does the game offer any incentive to beat hard difficulty? Any extra upgrades?

I'm having fun playing it, but I have a few small issues...

1) The controls. Even with a gamepad, it's still frustrating at times. Usually instead of the game selecting the thing I want to attack, it picks something else at random.

2) The graphics. The buildings seem flat and boring and the cars are not very detailed. GTAIV does cars much better, as well as buildings.

3) missions can be repetitive

i've been having a lot of fun with prototype so far. I'm only ~2 hours into the story, been screwing around in the city for a while though.

The controls aren't bad, as long as you have an xbox controller. The camera goes wonky sometimes, but that's rare and can be fixed by just re-centering it with the right stick...

I just spent like 20 mins in a military base, consuming everyone then just running around destroying everything. It's a lot of fun...

it's hilarious getting dressed as a cop, and hurling random people into the river.... also fun throwing them into crowds and seeing how many other peds you can take out.

I am playing it on the good old keyboard and mouse and I gotta say it feels fine. most of all the controls are classic FPS control schemes. except the inclusing of the R and F to turn on off different options. although some thing like the devistator attacks feel awkward to pull off... Mouse did seem wishy-washy at first until I increased my sensitivity a bit... then it seemed to be fine...

The graphics are OK. They look a lot better on teh PC then the 360 IMO (my friend doesn't have an HDTV though so this may not be completely accurate. But I'm playing @ 1280*1024 max settings). haven't really notices anything that looks terrible. They are what they are... not great but gameplay >>>> graphics anyways..

Gameplay - it's a lot of fun... I became addicted and played for probably around at least 12 hours over the weekend... with the way you purchase upgrades makes everything customizable to a point but fun a rewarding to do. I wish there was more of a mix of combat though... all the combos feel the same to me and it doesn't change it all up very much IMO. but the different powers that you can switch to is what makes it fun.

Bugs - only thing I'm encountering is a problem when I start the game it's all grey or orange... after I reinitialize the graphics engine (I usually just switch my AA) everything renders fine... the sound problem hasn't been a problem for me!

overall I think the game is pretty damn good... my only gripes are that it definately doesn't feel liek the world is truely responsive to you and whats going on... I mean come onewith 70% of the population of NY infected people just roam the streets willy nilly... I would expect there to be a lot of crazy stuff happening... It would have been awesome if teh devs spent a lot of time making the atmosphere feel realistic... but probably more for gameplay reason people are like cattle for you to comsume and regain your health with... but it would have been nice to see some poeple fighting back against teh military, or looting, rioting, crazy stuff like that... I for one probably would lock myself up in my house and not come out. graphics are medicore, the effects of the infection on you look liek crappy draw overs, where I think they could have easilty blended the whole thing in with Alex and made all that animation a lot more fluid and nice. textures are blah.but nothign really that hurts gameplay.

I would say its a decent port!

Anyone know how to run this game in windowed mode or change resolution?

Prototype does not support windowed modes; stability concerns probably. The resolution is limited based on your GPU memory. I tried a resolution fix file, but that stopped me from changing the res.

And now, a bias view of the game:

WHEEEEEEE!! Did you see the airtime on that civie? He must have soared into a new zip code! Over-the-top violence is hilarious! "I am crushing your head!" Curb-stomping body-surfing human-projectile fun! A kenetic Assassin's Creed with Devil May Cry levels of absolutely crazy combat and 100's of npcs/enemies onscreen at once, ready to be sliced in half (50 kills in 5 seconds is a 360 achievement) All that ridiculousness . . . . is in no way worth $60. Rent it on consoles, borrow if from a friend, or buy it when it hits $30.

I think I agree with the general sentiment here: It's a great game if you're looking for mindless action, but I have to say the presentation is a bit rough around the edges, voice acting/cut scenes are fairly mediocre, and there isn't much story that you really care about.

Again though, if you're comfortable looking past the story, there is a lot to love about this mindless beat 'em up.

All in all, wait until it hits the ~$30 mark, or rent it.

Good game but seems buggy.

It randomly just defaults to an orange screen and freezes. I have to power off my pc and turn it back on.

Wondered if it was my OC, so I ran Orthos last night, stable as a rock. Memtest passed this morning. I put 3d Vantage into a 4 hour loop for my videocard and no problems. Im guessing its the game or compatibility with win 7. Which is a shame cause I'm having fun with it.

But the constant crashing is killing me. I'm on what I assume to be the last boss and I cant finish it cause it crashes on me.

Hmm, that's odd. I played on the same rig in my sig without issue. Windows 7 x64 RC1.

With everything you've already tested I would guess NV drivers. Bit of a shot in the dark though.

The game is running flawlessly for me at max setting 1650x1080 on my sig rig. I think it's really fun, and I love the powers.
