Prototype on PC

The game is horribly buggy on the PC, avoid at all costs until it's patched.

First off, if you have Windows XP SP3, don't even bother. Numerous reports are flooding in that the game will not run on SP3 due to some glitched OS version check. Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista appear unaffected.

There's a much bigger problem though; the game checks how much RAM your video card has and will not let you set the resolution higher than 1280x800 if you have anything less than a 512mb graphics card. The problem is, it checks every card in you system, not just the primary one. If any of your cards have less than 512mb of video RAM, it will limit you to 1280x800.

So here I am with a GTX260 896mb and an 8400GS 256mb (used for my 3rd monitor), the game sees the 8400GS and caps my resolution to 1280x800 even though it's running on the GTX260...

Aw man that bites. Have you tried forcing your desired res in an INI file?

Seems comparable to my system discounting the SLI(with new games I generally assume SLI will NOT function correctly unless the game has that "The way its meant to be played" screen).

Thank you for the heads up.

Your processor is definitely better, your video card is probably better too, from what I've figured out the 9800Mgs is about equal to a 9600gt.

You helped me, I didn't want to seem like I was waving epeen around :p

Thanks for the hands-on update :) Looks like I get to keep $50 in my pocket.

prototype is working fine on my pc with an 8800gtx. using res 1920 x 1200.

the only problem i have is when it plays video, the audio seems to skip. but in game is fine.

If I set graphics to min, I get 20-30 FPS at 1680 x 1050. Setting graphics to max results in the same FPS. Does this game have huge CPU requirements? I noticed during install it said 1.83 ghz c2d minimum. Maybe I need a quad to get good fps?

I'm having the same issue. But my CPU usage rarely gets up 100%.

Ugh, buggy buggy buggy

Any kind of cutscene is all jerky and unwatchable, audio and video both pausing for seconds at a time.

And i cant set to 1920x1080 on my 8800gtx (768 ram), it just put my monitor into an "unsupported mode".

I will wait for a patch to play, as it does appear to have some fun potential, i enjoyed sprinting up the sides of buildings.

If it is indeed trying to run at 1920x1080 and it still says it's an unsupported mode, it's probably trying to use an unsupported refresh rate. You could try forcing it with Rivatuner or ATT.

Try going to your sound control panel and setting the default format to 24-bit 44100 Hz. Seems to have fixed sound issues for most people.

Game will sometimes crash on start-up for me, but that is the only bug I've found. Sound and everything else seems to work fine, though I have to turn my speakers up almost all the way to hear things well. That might just be my speakers though.

smooth as silk. Exciting and fun. Graphically beautiful. I do like this game. Have to play with a game-pad though as mouse is too laggy/slugish.

I purchased the ps3 copy for the kids and me, the PC copy. I think the PC looks great, even better. With all the quality settings in house and within the games control panel, I'm golden. I use vsync on as there is some tearing when off.

Did I say I like this game?

The graphics aren't stunning, but they don't detract from the game.

It runs smooth as silk and is really fun.

I give it an 8 on the mindless fun game scale, something I'll keep installed and come back to when I feel like it.

As a long-term GOTY style rating, I give it a 7.

Game runs much smoother than i thought it would be; i'm on a q9550 + 4770, playing at 1920x1200 with maxed settings. FPS rarely dips; the graphics look pretty weak, but i guess that's compensated by the hu-uge game world that needs to be rendered.
Loading is extremely fast too < - That surprised me quite abit since most games these days take forever to load.

This game is just pure -fun- :D

Not the visuals, I meant that it looks like it would be terrible to play, the same as most other japanese games like Dynasty Warriors or such; you play one big hard nut with crazy moves and run around killing hundreds of crap enemies whose only purpose is to be killed in a cinematic fashion.

Seen some videos on youtube. Kinda reminded me of spider-man.

well i beat prototype in 2 days prob like 6 hours of gameplay. great game.

i played it, i dont think it's a great game. there is no detail in gameplay. makes for boring game.

The couple of reviews I've seen said ~20 hours. You may be able to burn through the main storyline in 6 hours if you put your mind to it, but that's not really the idea behind a sandbox game...

This game is seriously turning into one of my all time favorites. Unbelievable the amount of content (only word I can come up with to encompass everything) the developers managed to pull off. The movement is absolutely the best/funnest/fastest/most intricate (3rd person) I've ever played, combat can be approached with just ENDLESS amounts of variance, and the vehicles control nicely...even the weapons are good, wow. The sound effects (really HEAR/FEEL the move/hit), music, city design, etc are top notch.

Complaints about graphics? Do people still think graphics > gameplay? If so, get over that ridiculous belief at least for this one game, hah. With so much going on, there's no way the graphics could have rivaled crysis or GTA IV and still pull off everything smoothly...wait until the city is 50% or more infected and you're destroying 100's+ of objects/vehicles/infected/people/buildings/etc all around you...

Solid ass game experience - can't say enough.

played a bit on the 360 last night, was pretty fun... just something satisfying with running up a building holding onto a car... I installed the PC version last night so I will share that next!

Mindless fun seems to keep cropping up in the context of this game all over the web, I think I might give the PC version a shot, anyone else report back on the PC version with recommendations?

I agree 100%....I'm in the middle of the PC version and I think game pisses all over Crysis. I played through Crysis two times from start to finish, and was only slightly impressed overall. I am already enjoying Prototype more, and I haven't even beat it yet. The graphics are great too...no complaints there.

What things do you specifically like about this game better than Crysis?

Looks promising. Gamespot popped an 8.5/10 for it. Giant Bomb gave it a glowing 4/5 stars. I like what I'm hearing and seeing, all told. I may just get this on the PC pretty soon myself. I really need something new to play.

Well, to be quite honest...everything. For example, Crysis' main appeal was the graphics...Prototype doesn't drop the ball there. It actually does quite well considering the huge world you are in. Crysis also brought in the Nano-suit which allowed you to have a "superhuman" experience. Well, take the guys from Crysis and drop them into the city to go against Alex Mercer from Protoype and you'd have a bunch of Crysis guys getting their asses handed to them. Like another poster mentioned, the options are endless when it comes to how you choose to kill your opponents. The gameplay is like Crysis on crack. The best way to describe it is like...let's say MDK, GTA, and Crysis had a baby. That baby was named Prototype.

Kinky... Who's the daddy?

Who else here remembers playing MDK? That was an awesome game!

I'm enjoying Prototype so far. The graphics are meh (mainly textures, tearing and pop in) but I don't have any complaints about the gameplay. It's been compared to The Hulk but I never got into that game so my experience hasn't been tainted. I'm playing with a controller because mouse and keyboard didn't make much sense for this type of game.

You can't blame tearing on the game. That's like saying the graphics are meh because it looks like crap at 320x240. Not something they have any control over (and something with a pretty straightforward solution ;) ).

I think you just sold me a copy of this game. :)

I find that most of the textures in the game are pretty decent considering the size of the world and what is going on when the infection begins to spread (a very cool concept). It is just that many textures, NPCs, and buildings are repeated making the whole place not very interesting to explore.

Still, I'll probably get seven days of enjoyment out of the game which is more than I get from most of the crap released nowadays.

Oh, and hooray for being able to bind various mouse buttons!

Anyone with the PC version having any strange audio related issues?

Apparently a bunch of folks including myself are having problems where the audio's volume is way low and also super fast chipmunk style. I have both problems.

^^ This is the work arounds until a patch comes. It fixed the speed issue for me but I still have to turn the volume up abnormally high vs. normal situations.

This game runs great with my system in sig. 1920x1200 w/ both detail and shadows on high and 2X AA. Like most have already said, some of the textures are lacking but given the size of the world and how much can come up on screen at once it's more than acceptable, and in the heat of battle you'd never notice.

I had a couple odd crashes at the beginning of the game, where the game would lock up until I alt-tabbed out and in again. I've only seen this happen twice in the 4-6 hours I've played already, otherwise the game runs great in Windows 7 64-bit. I have also noticed that the in-game volume is set pretty low, but that can be temporarily fixed by turning up the speaker's volume knob. I'm just using the onboard Realtek HD audio hardware if that has anything to do with it.

The gameplay is great. Plenty of variety and things to do. One thing I noticed is the game is far easier to control with my XB 360 controller rather than the usual keyboard+mouse combo, but with most 3rd person games this is usually the case.

It's easily worth the $35-$40 the PC version goes for online.

I was on the fence whether or not to buy infamous or wait for this im soooo happy i just got infamous.

It looks like a fun game but from what i have seen it seems like it would get old real fast.

I disabled a bunch of HID devices in the device manager and my frames shot up to 50-80+ depending on whats going on.

Note: The game defaults V-sync to on. I recommend everyone turn it off if they see that.

Yeah I cut v-sync of also after I noticed it was on. Now my frames really vary sometimes in the mid 100's. Plays much smoother now.

I don't think you could go wrong playing both if you enjoy the type of gameplay that it is.

Above all of the other comparisons that have been made regarding these two games, I think a comparison to City of Heroes/Villains is the most appropriate. Sure it's hack-and-slash like God of War, sure it's an open world like GTA, but at the end of the day it is what a non-MMO version of a superhero game really should be.
