I really shouldn't post this pic since the front won't look anything like this when it is done, but oh well, here it is anyways.

The project seems to be pretty cool. I like the way you used the mesh.
How long is that handle gonna stick, or are you not going to use it much anyway..

Nice, it's too bad that the window molding doesn't fit together smoothly on the optical drive though.

All in all this is lookin' really nice...I was thinkin' it was gonna be hot glue. ;)

Umm, reading the thread may help.... Just a recommendation though......

Loving it, man. Simple and clean, not too much extra crap. Nice. :D

yeah, u guys are really cool. Couldn't really compete with that...
can I touch you?

I don't wanna say "that's nothing" because I do like what Sarver has done with this mod...but you don't WANNA know what I'd be able to do with a new shuttle and all the tools/cash I needed. ;) :p

The Shuttle is fully loaded now, and I tested the handle a few more times just to be sure it wouldn't stress the lid too much. It works flalessly. It bends the lid maybe 1/2 mm total, which is probably the same as if the lid were still 1 piece.

Also, I agree about the molding on the drive. I knew it was going to be impossible to get it to line up perfectly at the joint because it is on a curve.

That;s why I lined up the joint on the center of the outside curve. The outside curve helps keep the ends pressed together (since the loding wants to straighten itself out), and it is now hidden by the lid.

Good point, I suppose you can't really see the line in the molding that easily with the case cut the way it is...and that's FAR from the first thing you'd be looking at with this particular mod. ;)

Sorry for the lack of updates in the last few days.

I got the new Shuttle faceplate in, damn Ebay seller took a week just to ship it!
Right now I am in the process of wiring up all the LEDs. Man, what a bear! I hope I never have to take this thing apart again!

I'd post pics, but there isn't really anything to take pcis of yet.

Once I get the thing put back together, you'll see some pics. Hopefully they will the "FINISHED" pics.

Sure, as long as you are gentle! :D

I am just trying to point out that the question has been answered three times (I think?) by Sarver and it's getting repetitious, all because you don't want to have to read. Sometimes the best parts of a worklog are the words that tell you what they are doing or trying to accomplish and why. I just didn't want to be a total ass about it. ;)

Good stuff man...I can't wait. :)

Window mod turned out nice but without plexi it's gonna be loud as hell... looks good though.

It's not going to be "loud as hell" just because it's completley open...if there's only 1 or 2 fans in the entire setup and the fans are all/both fairly quiet, then nothing changes...it's not like the mesh amplifies the noise or anything, it's just not AS quiet as it would be with a close case.

Who's talking about the fans? I've window modded a optical drive and in an open case, it's loud as hell. Piece of plexi over it and it's much quieter. Good thing is it won't be loud when you're not using the drive...

...and the case won't be loud due to the fans....

I agree the setup won't be too loud due to the fans...but in terms of the optical drive, it may or may not start to cause noise issues. I've had some optical drives that were quiet enough that I honestly could not/barely hear them spinning...and even with the window mod, I doubt that it'd be TOO bad...unless it's an old drive. For me it wouldn't matter though, as I barely use my optical drive...but for some this may differ.

Here's a very small update:

I disassembled the fan controller, hoping to be able to mod the faceplate to match the faceplate of the Shuttle. That was the whole reason I bought it in the first place. Anyways, when I took it apart, I found the silver part to be painted directly onto the acrylic face. Bastards!!!

PICT0600.JPG

I might paint the CD tray silver to match the rest of the case. I might also mod 2 more blue LEDs into the drive to illuminate the insides.
PICT0601.JPG

This shot shows how the faceplate assembly is attached. Good ole velcro!!!! I had to add that small block of plastic to activate the eject button. It is JUST the right thickness that just a slight touch of the lower right corner causes the button to depress, opening the tray. Now, who knows how to remotely locate the activity LED?
PICT0602.JPG

After reading some of the comments about the drive being hella-noisy once modded, I decided to fire it up and make sure. To my amazement, it wasn't any noisier than it was originally. So THERE!

You go Sarver...that faceplate is lookin' really nice...and it's good to hear about the drive.

All in all you've got a very nice mod going here, and it'll be nice to see it reach completion.

AFAIK, if you want to remotely locate the LED, just unsolder the LED, solder in some wire and run it out the back to a fan connector or something for ease of removal. It would be even cooler if you were to have the blue LED's light up with CDROM activity! Just reroute the internal power to the other LEDs you want to install.

Nice idea man...very good call on that cdrom activity LED.

the fan controlled doesnt look that bad at all to be honest... i still dont care for the colors used in this mod, but to each his or her own.. craftmanship is great though!

Agreed, I'd never go with the silver/blue theme myself, but modding is about personal preference and taste, the main thing is that the mods themselves are turning out very nice...good work Sarver.

Personally, I would've done all dark metallic purple (search for Purple Monster) on the outside, with a gold metallic on the inside.

Still not my top choice...but IMO that would have been a lot nicer. :)

That's just BS. I've done it and know it's louder.

It doesn't hurt my feelings that you say a windowed drive isn't any louder. Really, who gives a crap if your system is any louder; that's your problem. The real issue is that you're trying to decieve people into thinking this won't make thier system louder. Eventually, someone's going to believe you and when they do the mod and thier rig is louder it's YOUR fault.

You're not the first person to cut a window into an optical drive so do the decent thing and tell the truth...

First of all, why are you arguing with me? Are you hear and listening to the drive?
Second of all, why would I lie about it? If the drive was noisier, I would say it was. I have no reason to lie.

I take offense to the fact that you are calling me a liar.

WarlordOne - You have no right to be calling him on this. Not all optical drives are the same, and it is very well possible that his drive did not become any "louder" after doing the mod...there's no reason why he'd lie about it...and even though you've done the mod, it's possible that it wasn't with the exact same drive and the outcome could verywell have been different

SarverSystems - You have every right to be offeneded, I would be too...but try not to get too hostile, it's not worth getting worked up about.

I'm not arguing and I am sorry since I've offended you.

It's not like you did a dB check before and after; you're stating that you've percieved no change. There is no accuracy in that.

Anyway, I've stated my objection. There's no need to add more clutter to your worklog with more of the same...

I am saying the drive sounds no louder now than it did before. Simply put, the dirve is not louder with the hole in it.

Back on topic though, I have some time this weekend to work on it some more, hopefully finishing it up.

All that is left to do is the finish wiring. Wire up the LEDs, the drives, and the power connectors. None of whish will take much time at all to complete.

Very good news...when do you think we get to see a final product? :)

It woulda been done by now, but this mod takes a abckseat to my regular computer repair business. Potcock knows that, and told me "as long as it is done before the next LAN". Well, a LAN hasn't been scheduled yet, so we're good to go! Ha ha ha.

still lookin good man, potcock is settled into waiting now, its like quitting smoking, after the first 3 days your fine, that and he doesnt have the internet anyway.

haha...good stuff, hopefully a LAN is scheduled though if it means getting this thing done so we can see how she looks. :)
