project: Shuttle Cool Down

SarverSystems: You planning on putting a "seamless window" type thing in those spaces, or is something else going in there that I missed. It's too bad about the support posts being there.

My first thought was the seamless window...but who knows. :p

Windows? Modder's mesh baby!

Good call m8...are you going with the honeycomb pattern or the more restrictive circle pattern? I was seriously considering the honeycomb myself...just haven't decided exactly what I'd want done to my box to make use of it...so indecisive. :p

I hope that the panel has enough strength left to support that handle. I would be afraid of it bending eventually, if not the first time you pick up that system.

I like the seamless curved widows they always look pretty classy, but that may not be the look you want.

I have 3 or 4 different kinds of mesh here. I'll just have to see what looks the best.

I was unsure of the handle at first, but I loaded the case and picked it up. The handle comes with a reinforcing bracket that mounts on the underside of the lid. It makes it A LOT more rigid. In fact, it barely bends at all. No more than if the case were still 1 piece I'd say.

Good to hear, as I'm still playing with different idea's for panel mods to the shuttle I wanna end up with, and I was a little worried about the structural integrity of the cover.

This pic shows my first attempt at creating a new way to mount the faceplate to the front of the chassis. I used masking tape to locate the fasteners. The glue I used to permanently mount the fasteners was well over a year old, but I tried it anyways. It didn't work. The glue hardened, but it just pulled right back off the plastic.

Here you can see the 2nd (and final) try. I simply drilled through the front and used flat head screws that I had from a fan kit or something. Double-nutting them prevents them from turning once they are mounted. You can also see the LEDs mounted rom behind with plastic washers. I couldn't find any nuts to fit the goofy thread diameter.

Here you can see the final product. I had to redo the graphic on the front because I forgot I had ordered a fan controller for the 3.5" bay. His name is Potcock and he is part of Urban Quaker LAN (www.uqlan.com) in case you couldn't tell.

Holy freakin' crap...I've never seen that honeycomb modders mesh looking so good. You did an excellent job with those edges man, the windows look great.

Nice clean job installing that mesh. I think it's now safe to assume that cooling is no longer an issue

Now you can work on fan noise :D

Fan noise? Shouldn't be a problem. There's only 2 fans in the whole thing, and both will be mounted tot he heatsink.

this looks really good so far! the cuts and filing are gorgeous and the mesh is cut and fitted very very well.

Those cuts arent even finished yet. They turned out awesome, and I am amazed myself at how well they turned out.

In person you can see some problem areas that need worked on.

That's always the case though.

Regardless, very nice job with this mod so far Sarver...it's really lookin' good.

I have the same case. Cut out the alu behind the fan and temps dropped 3-4 celsius.

I am running a 120 mm alu fan at the back at 2% with speedfan. When I play games it goes to maximum 10%. It is super-silent at 2%. Then I am running an external M-ATX PSU that can not be heard. The loudest part of my system is the Baracuda drive.

It is not exactly the most modern case/mobo but its a classic! Mine will still go strong at least until 2007 I think :)

Nice to hear...and I'd also recommend cutting out the back mesh grill for the I.C.E. fan...it does help temps a fair bit for being something so simple...but I could have sworn he alreaady did that early on.

We finally had a nice day out, and it wasn't raining for a change. I took the opportunity to get some painting done.

I'll let the pics speak for themselves.

I nicked the paint in 2 spots before it dried. I'll have to snad it down and start over.

I decided to use the chrome molding around the edges of my cut. I think it's going to give more of a contrast between the blue and silver, and there are other chrome parts going on yet, so it should tie it all together.

You and me both! Great work so far, I am really excited about this build and can't wait to see how it turns out :D

Nice stuff so far Sarver...although I think that the loom on the PSU leads could make things tough to work with later on. Personally I would have taken the time to sleeve everything blue as opposed to using the loom, but that's me.

I really like how that mesh looks, can't wait to see this get closer to completion.

you are going to have to use the quiestes fans possible with all that mesh, as there is now zero buffer between you and the case fans.
also, check out what chipset fan you have, and then replace it with a zalman silent tower one (Zalman ZM-NB47J Northbridge Cooler big lump of BLUE aluminium http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/NB47J.jpg), as the chipset fans are often the noisiest.
Also, if you can, try and get rubber condoms for the fans (where they touch the case), vantec sell them, and rubber grommets for the fans. you will be surprised at the difference it makes.

good luck, and looking great

Thanks for the heads up! Currently there is no fan on the NB, just smallish black aluminum heatsink. I don't think I'm going to replace it, since this is an older Athlon XP system, and there will be 0 chance of overclocking it.

I like where this is going. Stick!

Thanks for the sticky.

If my SN45Gv2 was still my main rig, I'd be copying you right now.

Very nice work, can't wait to see it finished.

Took a vacation day today to get some painting done in the beautiful weather we're having.

What kind of edging are you using around your windows there?

Do you have a plan to keep the blue paint from getting scratched? It looks sweet now, but I'd worry about the paint scratching and the mesh getting bent out of shape over time.

I love your mod so far, I've got a question though, how are you going to secure the mesh?

If it gets scratched, it gets scratched. if it gets bent, it gets bent.

It's not my computer, so whatever he does to it, is his problem.

The mesh is pretty bendy, but if you don't push on it REAL hard, it bounces right back into shape.

As far as scracthes go, he'll just have to be careful.

I'm not 100% sure yet. Before I put the chrome molding on, the mesh held itself in. Now that the molding is there, the mesh doesn't fit the same, so I don't know for sure how I'm going to do it.

Nice to see the sticky on your thread Sarver...and I like how this is progressing.

In terms of securing the mesh...I'd look into options like some kind of metal epoxy (sorry I can't be more helpful recommending something) or something. Not sure how it'd work out with the thickness of the XPC's side panels, but it might also be possible to do something along the lines of welding the mesh to the inside of the side panel...although something like that should have been/should be done before the paint job.

Well, you could always rough up a few spots on the interior where you won't see it from the outside and "spot-weld" it with some JB weld going through the mesh onto the case as I've seen some others here do. Considering how this is going so far and the fact that this is for a client, not something personal, you might want to try for a more elegant solution, though. Good luck in any event, and, as others have said, this is looking really nice.

Agreed...the welding isn't the pretiest, but it's something that came to mind.

Good luck with this Sarver, she's lookin' good. :)

i used JB Weld when i mesh windowed my psu, scuff it and it paints ok enough. looking great keep up the work. making me want to dremel mine and put a mes window in it, then have the chassis powder coated and the cover and front ainted by a body shop...

I'd rather just get the entire thing done at an autobody shop to achieve the same finish throughout...I'm just not a huge fan of powdercoating after a couple bad experiences. Ah well, personal preference I guess.

As you can see, the mesh doesn't fit very well now that the chrome molding is attached. I have a very simple fix for that. More pics later.
