I wont bore you with all the words, unless there is something especially interesting to mention, so consider this a pictorial how-to. Ask as many questions as you want.

Lemme guess : The project goal is to improve the cooling in the SFF case ? Any fancy mods as well ?

Absolutely. Lots of parts are on the way. This is just the beginning.

I'll be sure to stick with this one and see how it progresses. I've seen quite a few shuttle mods in my day, and have some of my own planned if I ever have the cash to setup another system...so lets see what you can do. ;)

I'd asume this's gonna involve more than just an extra fan or two. :p

Just in case you don't know, that silver fan is wicked loud. I have it turned down to 60% in my rig using speedfan, and that puts it just below the noise threshold of the rest of my system.

Most of Evercools aluminum fans are to that nature from what I've seen. I used to run a 120x25mm version of the same fan in one of my Lian-Li's...and I got used to it, but it wasn't the quietest fan to say the least. :p

I don't remember where I bought it from, but it showed a 28dBA rating on it. I hope it isn't too loud, because there will be 2 of them in there.

Don't expect it to be quiet at all...it won't be blaringly loud...but my 120mm Evercool was rated at something around 32dBA...and like I said, it wasn't quite...but it should be bearable.

looking good, i love my G5 shuttle :-D im looking for ideas

ive been planning to trim the back, but not add the exterior fan.

Exactly what I would do...cutting out that back grill has dropped temps pretty nicely for many people, but I'm really against the look of that external fan, I prefer to try and maintain the sleek/classy look of the XPC. Personal preference though, keep goin' with this mod.

That's why I went with an aluminum fan. I wanted it to appear stock.

I've got some plans for the fan and chassis anyways.

Fair enough. The aluminum fan does fit in with the look of the case fairly well, but I (personally) still think that the exterior fan looks a bit awkward.

What other plans do you have for the chassis itself? I'm starting up a business in my hometown building PC's and dealing exclusively/only with Shuttle XPC's. I've spent quite a bit of time studying different models and have become very knowledgable about most of Shuttle's barebone models. Let me know if you've got any questions about them at all, I might be able to help.

Good luck with this mod, hope it turns out well for you.

You might want to extend that product line to include the X-Qpack as well. Still a Shuttle-esqu design, but with far more options. Dual drives, normal motherboard, normal power supply, etc....

I've got quite a few plans, involving paint, chrome, hexagoon mesh, LEDs, handles, feet, and other items.

Yeah, I was looking at the Qpack, and I might yet do that...we'll see. Thx for the suggestion, and I look forward to the following progress with your SFF.

I like the external fan, the extruded aluminum housing covers up the remnants of the old grille, and makes it look almost stock. It's not like the back is going to be that clean once all the cables are plugged in anyways. You've actually used the "dead space" in the back to boost your cooling. Better than a huge crossflow hole cut in the side any day. I'm interested in how you're going to open up the front of the case to let in more air...

How's your forearm feeling after all that "nibbling" :D

Guess I missed it being posted (or it wasn't)...didn't realise that this wasn't a G5 chassis you were working with...oh well.

Nice addition, didn't look like it was OVERLY difficult, and it's something unique to say the least. :)

I got some more parts in today. I forgot that I ordered 2 new fans and a fan controller for the floppy bay. Now I gotta rethink the ICP logo.

Well just be sure to keep us updated, I'm curious to see how this turns out.

Did you nibble out that cut!? Forearms like Popeye yet?

I like the look though... shaping up (down?) nicely.

Yup. Nibbled the whole thing. 1mm at a time. You can see a few of the (literally) thousands of metal shards laying there on the table. You can see the nibblers there too.

I have 3 dremel tools, but to be honest, they don't give nearly as clean a cut as the nibblers do. I can make a near-prefect straight line with them.

I have a FS/FT thread open looking for the dremel tool drill press. Hopefully with that, I can make straighter cuts!

Good stuff man, I've had some very good experiences with nibblers...did a whole case window in my Lian-Li PC-60 with an air nibbler before.

Nice job on that cut for sure...what kind of mesh are you using to fill it? I think I saw you mention mesh side panels at one point.

IMO id get rid of that "shuttle X" decal or paint on from the front of the case, its RIGHT in the middle of the picture.

There is no way to get rid of it. It's actually burnished into the outside of the acrylic.

wow, im impressed with the nibbling work... making me want to start dremeling the side of my shuttle... maybe i should grab an extra cover for $25...
keep it up!

That's the one main part of that G series that I have issues with...that horizontal bar looks so effing dumb. :p

Ah well...it's still lookin' good.

Totally agreed.

There's evena spot behind that fugly bar to put some lights, but I can't cause the fugly bar is in the way!!!

That bites the big one man...ah well.

I'm personally in the process of starting up a home business building PC's for people and dealing exclusively with Shuttle XPC's. I'm going to be offering case mods and custom paint jobs as an option, and it's always nice to see what other ppl can do with their SFF boxes.

Can't wait for more pics, should be nice. :)

Here's a small update.

I still have some filing to do to get some of those edges a little straighter.

Very nice man, I really like those cuts...more original then a typical side window or two. Hmm....this forces me to come up with something more original, 'cus I'm thinking of even just moving the rig in my sig into an XPC, and there could be some modding in store for that chassis. ;)

Seeing the top cut like that reminded me all of a sudden of the old Pontiac Firebird T-tops or maybe a Mercedes Gullwing.

How cool would it be to make both of those liftable hatches so that you can get into the comp and work on it without having to take the case off (for some things anyways?

I was actually thinking of something very similar...but quite a bit fancier than that...made me smile reading that. :)
