I too think that would be great, 6 cables leaving the 1280ML would be cool....
the red are for SAS and blue for SATA (might have the colors back wards, only looked at it for a few minutes before work....
It does look to be a pretty nice rig, I would give it a 8.5 of 10......

BTW gjvriez I decided im going to get that adaptec controller for my build cause since I wont be using raid I dont need an expensive controller...Thanks a lot.

(1) Ya, it is not bad, the general case is great, the drive trays are not my favorite, the light activity LED "tubes" look kind of weak.... The mobo sets almost an inch off the case on tall standoffs, a huge plus for me, who likes to hide cables.... I liked that each 4 drives across uses its own board, so if one failed, it would be easy to diagnose....
(2) Cool, I think it will work out great, I am getting one from Ockie, for Plutonium 3.75, my backup system..... I got the CPU yesterday, but no HSF, if anyone has a cheap 775 cooler, please shoot me a pm....
Sorry, I meant SAS 2nd/PRI. One being SAS and the other being SATA.
My problem right now, is where to put all the HDs, I have 22 in RAID 6, (cannot downsize on the 1280ML) and 1 boot drive. I am thinking about making my bracket in this area, I think even with a PC Power and Cooling 750w, there should be room enough....
That is what I am thinking, as I really need to get bigger drives and less of them to save on power and give me more space....

Does your PSU have enough molex connectors? Im counting that 13 would be needed. Also have you thought about fan controller this thing is probably going to be loud with all those fans.

Very glad to hear that, I learned a lot following Ockie's builds, but mine own project had it is own learning curve, mainly in terms of hardware....

I wonder if there are satapower-->molex adapters?
I used Galaxy for a long time before even 1.0 for the reason I was looking for something that would consume not only my wallet, but every file I want to store. I thought of Galaxy as it seemed to be a vast empty space.
The runners up were Space and Black Hole (or Wormhole).
You do not need to use all the molex connectors unless if the backplane is dedicating each molex to 2 drives. If the molex connectors are on a bus like they are on every other backplane, then you don't need to worry about populating all of them. One molex per backplane is more than enough.
Yes, you get these, but they are fugly looking IMO.
That is a good thought, I will look and I can always try it, but I bet ya, that I will only need 5 for the drives in the backplane then... One for fans and use SATA plugs for the internal drives...

If your going to build a backup server for plutonium....instead of calling it P3.75 you could name your backup server Uranium x.x
Plutonium backed up by Uranium.....that would be cool.

I cannot try to boot her up, till I shut down Plutonium 3, and since it is in use, I really prefer to wait until the slimline sata cable shows up, hopefully today or tomorrow, if it not here tomorrow, I will shut down anyway and switch stuff out, since the Q6600 gets shipped out tomorrow......

Hey gjvrieve I didnt check the specs on those cause I wasnt feeling too good, but ill do it today....is that board quad channel ram? I think I have 4x512 hynix ddr2 667 that are matched that would prob work better. Ill give ya a shout when i get home from work for sure.
Well, only progress this afternoon is fixing those 2 back fans, they come with molax connectors on each one, but I hate molax, especially since there are 2 4 pin fan connectors right under them on the mobo... So, I unsoldered them and soldered on 3 pin connectors, just to be sure, I tested them on an external power supply, and work great, this case comes with pretty good fans, pretty quiet, still moving a decent amount of air....
Will post pictures of first startup as soon as I have time at home to boot her up, prolly tomorrow, since right after I work, it is "nerd night out" with friends......

Ya, it works nicely, I actually have plenty of ports the way it is and the SAS controller on the other Asus server board, that I have, is not real fast, so I thought that with 30 ports in a 21 drive case, I should be good....
I got it all installed in the new case this morning, everything went pretty well. Right now, I am at work, while rendering on the new dually with a lot of files getting copied of the the RAID 0 array since its' disc members, (2) 750GBs, will not fit into the case anymore.....
Drive temps are not great, but I do have the top cover off, so that lets air not go through the drive back plane, so they should drop as soon as the cover is on....
No pictures, yet, will get finally pictures tonight, with hope that the slimline SATA adapter comes soon....
Finally not super busy, so I thought I better get some pictures uploaded for the all the Plutonium followers:
Great news, this thing is FAST and runs great, already rendered 20 HD shows on it... Power consumption is way better too, I dropped 100w, loosing the Q6600 and 2 HDs and less fans, going to try to get down to 15 or less HDs to see if I can get power in the 200+ watt range, FYI: I am pulling 369w at machine idle right, 420-450w under cpu and raid load.....

I am trying to decide on which drives to get, 1TB or go for 1.5TB...... I am thinking 1TB, simply, because I want backup NOW, and I like the prices....
Get the 1TB, there so cheap now. Check this Out., But fry's or some other place might have some crazy deal going on. Also those 1TB hard drives are usually cheaper here, at directcanada you can get Seagate 1TB .11's for $145
I was thinking of going with Samsung drives this time, I love Seagate, but I know that the F1's are better on power then the Seagate, this will be the first time, I run anything other then Seagate in a long time.... Now, if they would just hit $150 US!!!

What makes you scared of the Sammys? Any reviews that I have not seen on Areca controllers....??
To afford the switch over, I need to sell about 8-10 750s and then get the 1TBs for $150 each.... If anyone is looking to sell of 1TBs, let me know.....

Samsungs listed as possible problem in compatibility for Areca controllers.
Don't get me wrong, I have samsungs myself (in my other machines, not raided) and they work great. But when it comes to a large capacity file server, I like to not gamble... I did that on the GP drives and burned myself bad.
Well, Seagate it is... Anyone have 1TBs Seagate laying around, shoot me an offer!!
