I'm right now in the process of debating of switching galaxy 5.0 to WHS also.
do you plan on keeping your raid intact if you go to WHS or letting WHS manage the disks?
Update: I got my rails and everything in, I was so happy, because I get to take pics of everything nearly completed... however, I forgot the stupid rack clips at work (i dont have enough here at home)... so now I'm debating driving an hour into work and getting them.
Do it!
FYI - in my own Norco 4020 build, I lowered my drive temps by closing up the port holes underneath the 5 fans. Warm air is still pooling over the area above the CPU and I'm still trying to deal with that. Basically the two rear fans aren't able to exit the warm air fast enough.
Supermicro's wisdom of employing a fan shroud in their 2U and 4U cases is more obvious to me now.
I'm glad to see you came over the WHS side of life...It just makes thing too freaking easy. BTW we need to figure out how to get WHS to setup as an iSCSI target....that would be awesome for connecting HTPC's and stuff to.
I tried MySAN but it said that I was trying to install it on an unsupported platform...I figured it would see the OS as 2003 not "WHS" so that option is out.
Give this a try, maybe it will work.
And let me know what you use to cover up those holes, I'll have to give it a try as well. My temps aren't bad but could be better.
Ockie where did you buy the rails and stuff for the norco case?

Looking freaking sweet man, if you would, tell me why you rack the servers 1u apart, I can think of good reasons, but want to your reasoning!!!

Update, WHS transfer is excellent, I'm peaking out this basic network controller. It appears as WHS isn't limiting the system transfers, it's basically JBOD performance. I'm very impressed with WHS so far.
More to come and pics to follow. I'm right now in the process of debating of switching galaxy 5.0 to WHS also.
These rails are universal rack rails, gruber sells these, you can pick them up on their ebay store for about $28 each. I went with this route because I'm not sure if I trust the norco rails (also, some of those 3rd type party rails have a ton of pieces to assemble).
Before you guys go too crazy about WHS, I'd recommend Ockie you spend more time with it before basing too much long-term planning on experience with it so far. Not to be a killjoy but I had high hopes for it too back in January when I put it through serious testing, and found serious drawbacks that made it a no-go to manage large storage.
Of course I haven't tested the latest/greatest version with the latest patches, so perhaps they've changed the way their drive pooling service works. After reading whitepapers on their drive pooling back during my evaluation, the problems I was having made sense. At the time at least, the behavior was that the first drive in the pool would serve as the "landing" drive that data you copied to the pool ended up on. Let's say I copied 10gb or 20gb of data to the "pool" (which ended up on 'landing' drive) - then at some point the drive pooling service decides it's going to move that data off to another drive in the pool, so while it's doing that let's say I decide to copy more files to the "pool" - all of a sudden transfer speed of my copy to the pool goes to $hit because the "landing" harddisk is already busy copying data off to another drive.
No doubt all of our needs are different and my gripes might not be felt by the average WHS user, and I hope WHS continues to improve because I too like the idea of software-based drive pooling, even though transfer speeds are going to be no faster than that of a single drive - enough to deal with differential data backup, though the initial backup of multiple terabytes to a WHS drive pool could take days to weeks.
I have some exp. with the rl-20 pretty much easy to use. Mount rail to rack. Mount other piece to box. Mostly a major bitch because there's a bunch of hw and getting their screws to clear properly is a pain, but once it's done it's not going anywhere. example. example 2. i've bought some stuff from gruber before they are good, good customer service (friendly).
I'm not gonna hold my breath. I'll buy whenever I need the extra case. I'd be worried that the new revision costs more (considering that these things flew off the shelves, thats a real possibility). Some other norco products which flew off the shelf came in new revisions 100-200 bucks more (anyone remember the raid cases?)
Yea, I'm thinking about buying another one to just hold onto right now.
Ockie, or anybody else, were you able to give StarWind a try on WHS?
Sweet setup Ockie. It's giving me ideas for my next WHS server build. The one I have now is nearly maxed out.
Glad to hear. You will see a lot of other galaxy offsprings on these forums![]()
Just an FYI before anyone buys anymore Norco 4020 cases - they're about to release a rev2 case, where it's still 20 bays but it'll be a single backplane instead of 5 x 4-port backplanes. Supposedly will also have LED management headers.
Should be out in a few weeks according to kapone. I was about to buy another Norco 4020 but am waiting on the rev2 one now in the hopes it will simplify connectivity.
I just got mine straight from Norco themselves (USPS international = expensive)..
It has _NO_ SAS connectors, and the fan headers are no longer on the backplanes themselves, but there are still 5 backplanes. Fans have a dedicated PCB for power now, takes 1 molex.
Maybe I suck at ordering and ordered the SATA only version? Or did they change something already?
Sounds like you got version 2![]()
