I have a machine with an x3210 Xeon in it. I have Server2003 32bit installed on it. I am trying to install 2008 64Bit on it(using vmware), BUT it keeps saying my processor isn't compatible, when it really is..... is it because my current OS is only 32bit? What gives? Any help would be appreciated.
 
I'm not trying to upgrade. I installed vmware on my CURRENT Dell server that has 32bit Server 2003 on it. I want to install 2k8 server 64bit on my virtual machine, and it says no. That my processor doesn't support 64bit, when I know for a fact that my x3210 DOES.... is it because my Dell server is running a 32bit OS? It shouldn't matter should it?
 
Doesn't Virtualization have to be enabled in the bios? (i could be wrong)
 
check BIOS to see if Intel VT / Virtualization support is enabled. You can run a 64bit guest on a 32bit host, however:

1.) You will still only have access to the 4GB of memory that's addressable by the 32bit host OS (unless you're using a newer build of VMWare workstation, which CAN address the system memory above 4GB. Server and player do not support this)

2.) Your CPU and BIOS must support the virtualization mode of the CPU. without CPU and BIOS support, it will be disabled, killing your chances of pulling this off
 
It is a Dell Poweredge... I WILL check the BIOS...thanks guys!

Dell Optiplex and Latitudes DO have the option in the BIOS to enable/disable virtualization technology ;)

I would think the Poweredges do also.

I didn't mean to say that they didn't, only that some OEMs don't include that option.
 
yes, and those that are configured like that will have it enabled, if the BIOS rev supports it, and detects a compatible CPU.

Make sure that your BIOS is up to date.

vt is turned off.
