I acquired a gateway 1625 laptop a few weeks back that was randomly locking up requiring a hard reboot. I cleaned all of the vents, pulled the heatsinc and fan and cleaned them, applied new TIM etc. running it on a laptop cooler and it is still locking up randomly. Some times it will run for days without issue sometimes it wont even finish booting up.

It had 4GB of RAM (2 2GB sticks) but blue screens with both of them installed. I determined one was bad by trying to boot with one of them at a time.

So I've ruled out heat and at least one stick of RAM thats causing the random hard freeze, what else could be the problem?
 
I didnt check event viewer. I installed Ubuntu on it yesterday, so far no problems. I'm thinking it might be the other stick of RAM, I got a page fault. in non paged area error yesterday before I wiped Win 7 and installed Ubuntu. I just dont wanna drop money on RAM and it turn out to be something else.

I'm using the laptop as my second monitor (since my actual 2nd monitor died) using Synergy to control both computers with 1 mouse and keybord
 
spoke to soon about Ubuntu, it just turned off for no reason. It wont start again unless i pull the battery out and reseat it. It gets to post and shuts down again.
 
Could be a damaged CPU or just a plain defective motherboard.
