Prey (2017)

I'm not really feeling the enemy designs if I'm honest.
Black blobs just don't seem particularly scary or interesting.

Yeah, I was hoping that it wouldn't just be those black creatures, but it's looking more and more like that's the case.

Troubling. Might even argue lazy but then again not a whole lot is known yet. I don't want to be unfair about it.

New gameplay(ish) trailer...
Linky
Cautiously excited, but they added a preorder pack at the end... (trying not to get annoyed)

If I could get an OLED 27 inch(ish) 1440p (QHD?) for less than a kidney, I'd be all over it.

I never played the first Prey game but judging by the trailer for the new game this looks like a combo Doom meets System Shock meets Dead Space

As far as I can tell, it bares little to no similarities to the original game which was more a less a bog standard shoot em up.

Game looks fun and beautiful. Cant wait to play it. Original Pray was ok and it had its scary moments. This one is verydufferent. In a good way it seems.

I don't have a problem with the design in general (they look pretty cool and the morph ability is interesting), but if that's all we get the entire game I could see it becoming stale pretty quickly.

I wouldn't say bog standard, it had some interesting gravity and portal mechanics and (IIRC) puzzles related to those.

The original Prey 2, that was being developed by Human Head games, looked quite different from Prey as well in terms of its setting and gameplay, but they still kept the story tied to the first game:

It was going to be a Blade Runner'ish type of game where you played a human bounty hunter on an alien planet and as you can see from that demo, it was looking great and actually quite far into development.

Sadly Beth tried to strong-arm Human Head into selling their studio to Beth (which is nothing new, they have done this in the past), they didn't want to sell to Beth so Beth basically let the game die and wouldn't pay them, so they stopped woroking on it and then Arkane (which Beth just happened to buy out during development of Dishonored...) took the reigns and basically started from scratch (they couldn't use Human Heads code) and they just threw out all ties to Prey 1 and made their own game and called it Prey.

PC Gamer's write up in their latest issue got into some nuts and bolts and raised my interest.

They aren't making any promises but considering this is Arkane and what was described here they are wondering if this game ends up being good enough it could be the "spiritual successor" to System Shock and Bioshock.

Worth reading.

If anyone short of the original Looking Glass / Irrational teams was going to pull something like this off, it would actually be Arkane IMO.

Looks underwhelming as fuck. Sort of like Dead Space meets Mass Effect. Fuck these pricks for using the same name as a sequel to a game it totally is unrelated to.

I disagree. Prey 2 already had nothing to do with Prey. How is this any different. In all probability this game is going to be better than Prey 2, just because a studio that puts out consistently good games is working on it. I loved the first Prey, and it had a lot going for it with innovation in game play that would later become pretty standard (portals, gravity, physics puzzles, different protagonist than usual) and some other things like the vision quest things, it still wasn't anything terribly new or amazing. It was a very good game, and I very much enjoyed it, but there are better. There were some unforgettable scenes even like when you revisit the bar. :D However, I trust Arkane to make a good game more than I trust Human Head, and Human Head doesn't exist anymore, so...

If you feel like rolling the dice, this is ~$33 on cdkeys.com right now.

I think I will wait, personally.

I'll take that wager! I was waiting for it to show up there or GMG. Hell if it's really good I'll buy another copy for my brother. After I determine whether I won or lost. :D I shall grab a key on Wednesday when I get paid.

not many people thought the new Doom was going to be any good and it turned out great so anything is possible...this new Prey game might be amazing...

I'd vote for that, given who is developing it. It may not be a true successor to the original Prey, and I understand people being upset about that, but I'm fairly confident it will still be a game worth playing.

Just purchased one. Can't beat that price. Everything everybody is writing about it sounds really intriguing.

Dayyym, that makes me think a little Dead Space and a lotta Twilight Zone. I'm getting a bit excited, heck- I might preorder if the CD-Keys 33$ is still going on...

Heh- ninja'd!

Performance in that video doesn't seem great...or is it the video playback?

I thought it was sort of quirky also. But you know I like Indie games, so it wasn't a big deal. Going to wait on this one and see how it goes. :)

The backlog is very strong with this padawan. Ha ha!

The music & art style really make think of Mirror's Edge with the helicopter flight. I'm quite excited to play this (after ME Andromeda!).

Hopefully it's good, 2017 lineup looks lackluster imo.

I guess it is... I haven't thought about any releases past Prey. After that I'm feeling a bit clueless as to what's on the horizon for releases.

Mass Effect: Andromeda is the only thing on my radar atm and I'm a bit skeptical about that.

Dishonored 1 and 2 are some of my favorite FPS. Watching some of the footage reminds me a bit of a Bioshock/System-Shock/Half-Life in an updated engine.

I'm intrigued.

Same reaction. I think this will be good.

I'm really wanting it to be good, but my expectation is that it will be "okay". Hope I'm pleasantly surprised.

+2 I get the exact same vibe. Trying to curtail my expectations, but it's difficult not to be excited for this one.

Looks like Fear , Deadspace, Deus Ex. Cool sound fx
Reading people's emails in DX:HR and DX:MD were great. I don't know how I feel about audio logs - that's another thing from Bioshock... which does sort of bring me to this tangent: are audio logs the best background story telling method or just the laziest? Also, when does the "voice over the radio telling me to do things" trope get old? Never?

Audio logs were first in System Shock and touted as the most amazing thing ever. I think it is fine way to tell story and keep a game isolation atmosphere.

It works. Dishonored does this as well.

If you're taking your time in the area, the audio logs are optional but you play them while you're doing something else and you can take in that much more depth, context, and subtext to everything around you. I think it's a good device that helps tell story at the pace the player wants and is non obtrusive.

I'm starting to get hyped for this game.

I would prefer audio logs over reading to be honest...as long as you can listen to the logs as you explore/do other things in-game. Especially in a suspense/thriller type game...stopping to read in safety kind of breaks the immersion.

I took Vacation for this game....

I think the launch is going to be HUGE since nothing else is in the pipeline this year.

There's plenty of good PC games out or coming soon.

Resident Evil 7
Sniper Elite 4
Vikiings Wolves of Midgard
ME:A
Ghost Recon Widlands
Prey
Injustice 2
Star Wars Battlefront 2

Prey looks the best out of all of those except maybe Vikings Wolves of Midgard which is in a different class.
