I was readin on Gamespot.com, and found this really interesting tidbit which is somewhat exciting...

"Game companies occasionally register domain names (see playstationarc.com) which don't end up being the final title of a product (see the PlayStation Move). However, oftentimes when a company locks down a URL, it points to the moniker of a new game or device.

With that caveat in mind, it's unclear what to make of four non-functioning URLs dug up by Web-info-trawler Superannuation. The first two come from Activision, and both pertain to the James Bond license it acquired in 2006. The publisher has locked down the Web address bloodstonegame.com, apparently the title of a 007-branded driving game that popped up on British retailer HMV earlier this week.

The second, goldeneyegame.com, is likely to arouse much more interest amongst gamers. That's because it bears the name of Rare's N64 1997 game based on the 1995 film GoldenEye, Pierce Brosnan's first outing as the martini-swilling agent. Unfortunately, it's also the title of a lackluster 2004 game from former James Bond license-holder EA, in which players assumed the role of a James Bond villain named GoldenEye. What Activision has in store for these URLs is unclear, as Activision reps gave a polite "no comment" when asked about them."

I think this would be great if they could pull it off. Goldeneye to me is still one of the top shooters of all time. Not only was it just a great game, but it was probably the best movie to game adaptation ever... and that was actually done right. Think about it... how shitty are games made from movies? Even if they messed up a remake it wouldn't soil the old game because it'll always be great but I do hope that if they do remake it, that they will make it true to the original and capture that same feel if not better.

Man Goldeneye was such and awesome game. I have some very good memories playing that game 4 player with friends.

There is a Source mod out for Goldeneye. Its pretty fun.

As for a remake, I'm kind of on the fence. They would have to make it true to the movie and not add any over the top weapons or action scenes for me to be interested in it.

Goldeneye was an awesome game in its time. However, with our enlightened future space brains, I think we can all agree that nostalgia is tinting our memories with a pinkish-rose hue. I'm confident that any attempt at a faithful remake of the game would suck ass.

I agree it would suck ass. You know they wouldnt get it right.

But think if they did, if they made it exactly like the first game but used the Crytek engine to render the enviroments! (the first one, not the new consolized version)

I can dream can't I.:p

That's not a fair statement... I know there are a lot of Final Fantasy fans out there who would love to see FF7 remade... Goldeneye to me is just one of those games that has always stuck out to me. Half Life is another one, although the remake for that one (Black Mesa Source) has been taking years but i'm still looking forward to it.

Oh my God..

I loved that game! I still play it to this day on my old N64. Even if the remake sucked ass I would still play it. They'd have to make it true to it's origins, but in all reality with the way the gaming companies make remakes nowadays, it gets messed up a lot quite often.

Still though, I'd play it and compare it to the original, even though that might not even be possible. :S

Goldeneye always brings me back to childhood. Ah, memories..

Well if they do something like PD with updated GFX, etc I'd be interested.

Question:
Don't MGM hold the rights for Bond?

If that's the case and due to MGM's current problems we might have to wait a while IMO.

I hope Rare converts it to XBox Live Arcade, like they did Perfect Dark. While Perfect Dark isn't exactly a "remake" it was more of an updated version of hte original version on the N64. That said I was happy that they kept the old school feel to it.

I was just thinking the other day how awesome it would be if someone came along and updated goldeneye to current console generation graphics, as long as they kept everything else the same including the split screen.

I can't imagine a remake holding up to the nostalgia of the original. If it doesn't take 4 controllers and I don't have to blow on the cartridge to make it work, I'm not interested in playing.

Says right there in the article: "With that caveat in mind, it's unclear what to make of four non-functioning URLs dug up by Web-info-trawler Superannuation. The first two come from Activision, and both pertain to the James Bond license it acquired in 2006. "

There are some classics that have their place in time and in our memories. I think a lot of game developers agree with this and let them have their spot in our nostalgic memories. There are more good games coming out that will be the next to fill our memories, I think game developers should should focus on those and let near perfect games stay that way.

Hmm, fun game as it is, being the second one I ever bought for my N64, I moved on. I enjoyed Perfect Dark way more, and was more than happy with the Timesplitters Series after that. I'm pretty sure I'd enjoy whatever game the group behind those is working on now, even if it isn't James Bond themed.

Timesplitters 4 will be your best bet then when it comes out.

why bother with a remake at this point? even if it's remade, it will never be as big as the firsst one was. Hell most people probably don't even remember golden eye or care.

I doubt it'll be a proper remake, more likely to be just like Perfect Dark the 360, just slightly higher res textures and fps above 10 lol

I will never trust a remake again, after hearing about the X-Com remake they are working on.

THEY ARE TURNING A TURN BASED STRATEGY GAME INTO A FPS!

If they did remake Goldeneye, it would probably be a web based game about farming, because that's what popular right now, and Activision only cares about money.

10 FPS is an exaggeration. You'd only see a frame-rate that low if you spammed explosives with 3-4 human players in high res mode. (Nobody who even halfway knows what they are doing plays multiplayer in high res mode) Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

From what I've heard Free Radical is no more, so that isn't going to happen.

That was so fun playing 64-bit games in 1997.

Why 1997? If you had an Atari Jaguar you could have been doing it in 1993/4 with Alien vs. Predator or Doom... :p

And while the N64's NEC R4300i CPU had a 64-bit architecture, it's datapaths and buses were 32-bit to reduce pin counts and PCB complexity. Here's a good resource on the details of N64 hardware.

I had so much fun with this game, but I can't think of anything special that a remake would do. Was goldeneye the first of it's kind? I'm thinking it's just nostalgia too.

It wasn't the first of it's kind but it definitely "raised the bar" for what was expected for upcoming fps games. Think about other console first person shooters in 1997 and before. Goldeneye was incredibly impressive compared to the competition at the time.

One thing that not alot of people know about the N64 was that the final version was made to cut costs. The original had higher clock speeds and 24 megabytes of ram as opposed to 4, which is why you heard all the stuff they said about 'photo realism'. It would've been dreamcast quality...

I wish they would revamp it and put it up on XBL Marketplace like Perfect Dark. I think online multiplayer would be killer!

I have been playing GES since it started its early betas and it has come a LONG way since they moved past their leaders death. Fun and much better in its current iteration than before. The map and music remixes are great. I cant throw hours at it but for a few rounds its a blast.

Especially on the maps that are not straight remakes, so you can actually fall off the ledges lol.

A mainstream remake though? I think I would pass on it unless it really was fantastic.

I remember we used to play one hit kills with pistols all the damn time.

NO YOU CANNOT BE ODDJOB!!!!!

So many fights over that one.

lol, with big heads turned on.

But I think it will only be nostalgia that drives any sales of this game. Kids these days are too into the Halo and the COD and whatnot.

This game doesn't have a big heads mode. It does however feature "DK Mode", Which reportions everyone's body model to be very similar to that of Donkey Kong. Rare could get away with this at the time because they had a very close relationship with Nintendo.

What do you mean? They could get away with it because they developed donky kong country.

And yes goldeneye had a big head mode.

Does activision own the rights to the old Goldeneye game on the N64? Maybe for some reason their making the game playable online through a browser. Its been done a few times.

What I mean is Rare was a first party developer who had permission to use the Donkey Kong character in the games they made.
And here look at the cheat menu for yourself!!! Whoops your WRONG! It was DK Mode!!!!!

I dont think you get it they didnt need permission to use their own models they made the models after all...

Maybe instead of being a cocky fool you should realize that its been referred to as big head mode since the game launched...

Even googling goldeneye big head mode gets more than 4x more results than goldeneye DK mode.

No, I don't think you get it. It's not about making the models AT ALL. It's about having the rights to use the intellectual property of Donkey Kong. Some proof on this, is when Microsoft bought rareware they had a yet to be released donkey kong game that Rare had developed - Donkey Kong Coconut Crackers. Nintendo refused to let them release the game, because they didn't want Microsoft as a first party developer so Microsoft had to remove all references of the Kongs from the game and they released it as a Mr. Pants game instead. You obviously don't know what your talking about as you do need permission to make a DK game or use the characters that belong to Nintendo. And the cheat is DK mode, not big head mode. Just because some websites have referred to it ad big head mode dosen't make it so. Nice try, but think next time you make a post, try to make it about something you know about! Thanks!
