Alright folks, I got a few hours with my new toy and I must say that it is very very good. I am totally enjoying it and it improves on several deficiencies that I felt my then-current system had. Without further adieu, here are the pics! I know we're all pic whores (I know I am), I made a took a whole slew of pics from beginning to end.

The OLD GUY... the Cary SLP-98 preamp.... no headphone amp here, but just good ol' tube preamplifying goodness. It was the previous Stereophile Class A preamp and the crown jewel of my system for over a year now. Too bad its bigger brother is here to take its spot! Bwahahaha!!

Alright, setting up the Power Supply... that's the umbilical cord I'm holding...

Alright... the Cary 05 Preamp/Headamp on top...

Oooh.. the headamp switch!

The headamp section.. too bad it doesn't have balanced outputs like the RS B52... ah well. You see those 2 tubes directly on top of it though? Those are for the headphone amplification only! The rest of the 6 tubes are for the input stage and the output stages... which if I switch the headphone switch "on" - the headphone gets a signal that has gone through the entire 8 tubes of the preamp. This is one hardcore headamp.... and SMART, too! It uses the balanced topology of the preamp + the 2 final 6sn7 tubes instead of having to create an entire headphone amp starting from scratch!

TURN IT ON! Power supply first... watch the meters power up after 30 seconds....

After the meters max out, the ready light goes on RED and signals that the tubes are ready to go.... 90 seconds...

The system so far...
You can see one of my speakers (Martin Logan Summits used as a hanger for my component gloves and an xbox headset) and the entire rack (the Cary 98 remains for a few weeks while I listen to it and compare to the new Cary 05... then it goes for sale).

Extras:

The rest of the stuff... 2 remotes and some fuses. Seems like they even included some "CRYO-ed" fuses... not sure what that does to the sound, if any. I'm a skeptic.

The old vs new remote.... I got used to the old one though... .

I would've included a pic of my entire system including the PC, but my workstation was so messy because my gf was over and she ate on my table and I had purses and jackets everywhere.. ah well.

Impressions:
Better imaging and a lot more control over the various instruments/vocals. What I noticed first and foremost was that this is very transparent, natural-sounding, and musical.... moreso than even my prior preamp. On top of that, I noticed one thing that is the main reason why I think it's worth the money I spent, the fact that when I turn up my system - the imaging remains coherent and solidly focused is a BIG improvement! With my old preamp 98, once I turned up the volume knob to about 80-90db, I'd begin to lose coherence and the image of the singer would begin to ENLARGE! This sucks because it's not realistic..

I'm glad the 05 improved on the overall coherence of my system... it's beginning to sound real good now. I can turn it up and the image remains relatively normal-sized.. while allowing a more realistic reproduction of the ambiance of the recording studio/hall! It's impressive how wide my soundstage is.... you guys have to come over and hear it for yourself.

I know I've heard better, but this is getting to be really scary good.

Improvement for the future...
1. I think I can hear a bit of high-frequency artifacts at times.... I think this is because I lack room treatments. Once I finish my home-made DIY treatments, I'm going to take pics once I get them up.

2. I need balanced xlr interconnects to truly run my system in balanced mode (meaning the R and L channels never commit the since of crossing paths/crosstalk/cross-interference) from the PS Audio III DAC -> Cary 05 preamp -> Plinius 102 amp! I'm going to ask it for Christmas. I'm looking forward to another increment of improvement in sound.

3. I think I could use a better source, but I'm going to slow down for a few months until I find one that can replace my fully-balanced PS Audio III. Perhaps another Cary unit?

4. I have a lot of 6sn7 tubes in my possession so it would only make sense to tube-roll my preamp. I'll do this after I get back to my apartment this weekend.... Sunday night. Something to look forward to!

5. I need some headphones now.... I think I'm going to ask for a Sennheiser HD-650 from my gf. My brother has a spare Sony SA5000 so I can use those in the meantime. He also has the AKG701 so I'm sure he'll let me borrow those for a week or two.

In an attempt to ramp-up my audio savings funds, I've just posted my guitar on Craigslist. Should fetch a cool $2500, which will expedite things nicely. There's a chance I may be selling my GS1 quite soon after getting it: I feel the call of tubes, however astronomically expensive they may be. Plus I need a new challenge. I'll still post pics when my headamp gets here though, as I'm sure I'll enjoy it for a little while. (Although it would make for a decent office amp .....)

As for upgrading the PS Audio, a Bel Canto would look awfully nice on your rack
Underwood Hifi has a boatload of mods available. Of course I don't know how they would mate w/ your speakers, I've never had the privilege of hearing Martin Logans...but they are heaven w/ HD650s. I was listening yesterday, and had to stop typing and just listen. I was just awestruck listening to some Dream Theater. But I digress...

Well, I don't have an audio system like that, but I do love music, so figure I'd post my DAW\guitar setup here. I usually post pics in the display forum where I hang out, but I wanted to show off my M-Audio BX5a speakers

I actually have 2 seperate setups. One all Digital and one all analog.

Digital guitar setup. Roland GR-20 Guitar Synthesizer, M-Audio Black Box, M-Audio BX5a reference monitors, and a Godin xtsa guitar (amazing guitar).

Analog guitar setup. Fender Deluxe Reverb (reissue), Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal, Dunlop Cry Baby Wah Wah pedal, and a Fender Strat (mexican, but my 1st electric and I love it still).

For DAW, I use mostly Ableton Live 6, and sometimes the freebie Krystal.

Here is a combo pic of my whole setup.

Oh yeah my PC speakers are the Logitech Z-2300.

Last but not least is my music listening area behind my office, where I love to relax.

And yes that is vynyl, and yes I play them all the time on my 15 year old JVC stereo, with Clements speakers. I wonder if anyone has ever heard of Clements are Canadian made and were pretty cheap way back when.

Anyone wanna suggest an upgrade path for my audio? I am willing to change everything except that turntable... too many good memories!!!

My brother about a year ago got a Mexican made Fender Strat and as far as both of us are concerned, it performs basically the same as the American model. For the money it's just the better buy. Those pedals are great pedals to start out with by the way.

Those two pedals you have right now are what my brother started out on. Recently he got a Digital Repeater and a Chorus (I'm not crazy into guitars like he is but to my knowledge I think that's what they are called). Gahhhhh bathroom...

Thanks for the compliment, I wish you guys could hear it instead of just seeing the pics. It's a really sweet sounding system, easily "faking" realism to an extent. Very entertaining no doubt... sometimes, I just sit back and "stare" at the space between my speakers and just pick out the singer, the drums, the guitar, the trumpet, etc... or sometimes I close my eyes intermittently to get an even better sense of the ambiance of the recording. Other times, I'm bobbing my head to the music.... and sometimes I find myself applauding/clapping my hands after a good performance! It's truly a great way to unwind... I miss my system when I go home to my parents' place for the weekend.

The best memories I've had of my system involves me sitting in my listening chair... but some of my more recent memories have me - dare I say it - enjoying the beat from Britney Spears' latest tracks. I know, I know.... but it's such a catchy beat..... damn the way she sounds through the electrostats!!

Regarding the subwoofer question - I do not have a subwoofer at all, Ryan. Problem is, I've had difficulty integrating a subwoofer with smaller electrostats as they generally stick out like a sore thumb.... meaning I'd have to really pull out all the stops on a sub - we're talking $10,000 for a Wilson Benesch Torus subwoofer. I don't have that much lying around, nor would I want to at this stage of my life - I haven't even graduated yet! LOL!

No worries though, if you or anyone hasn't figured it out yet, the ML Summits actually go almost full range. It is spec'd to go down to 24hz flat. It has FOUR 10" aluminum woofers in a sealed enclosure which means it should be (and is) faster and more accurate than a ported sub enclosure. The 4 woofers gets 200 watts each for a total of 800 watts of Class D ICE-power amplification!

ICE-power is amplification developed by Bang and Olufson btw.

Yeah Wilson is kind of up there... My uncle runs (I think) a Martin Logan Descent with his speakers (which are Martin Logan... well very old Martin Logans which he said were similar to the older Odyssey style, he purchased them during the mid 90's if I remember right) and it sounds pretty good (I'd need a real listening test to tell you if they matched well or not since playing Dark Side of the Moon isn't a good enough test alone for figuring out things like that). Have you looked much into the Martin Logan subwoofers? It's amazing having a subwoofer going down to 20 Hz because you just feel these amazing vibrations in your ears, your chest, your pant legs, and best of all, a good subwoofer doesn't really conflict much with the speakers (a old Yamaha subwoofer I used to have tried it's hardest at frequency levels that my speakers were working at (60-150 Hz) which made too much boom at that frequency and yet provided almost nothing at very bottom end--never really went past 30 Hz and it was obvious that I had to crank the volume to get 30 Hz to come out a lot otherwise 40 Hz was really the bottom of its rated +/- 6 dB range using my senses).

Yep anyways, I wish I could hear it. Next time I'm in the midwest perhaps I'll stop by.

LOL my wife has been saying that for 5 years. I been holding on to it because i have a box of about 30 tapes that I want to digitize, but have been procrastinating for that long.

I guess I just dont have the heart to throw it away.

Mind you, I think CDs are useless too. The momemt I buy one, I rip it and store the CD.

Buy like I said, not my vynyl for some reason.

Yeah.. most definitely. The only time when I thought I needed a sub was when I was experimenting and I had my set up in my apt's living room (which is about 22x14 including the dining nook).... but I quickly set it back in my room because I liked the intimate sound better and because I loved having my system hooked up to my PC since I could not find a set of PC speakers that I could reasonably live with for most of the day.

This guy is smart. Still in college, but I get lots of scholarship. I use my scholarship money to pay for everything I need to get by on a daily basis and I use about 50% of that for the audio habbit. In addition, I've saved up a sizeable amount from working many summers worth of jobs at the hospital floors since I had no idea what to spend them on and I was not into cars that I could afford because the only cars I wanted were the ones that I couldn't afford.... lol! So, all in all... from the tally I just came up with at the other thread - about 40% is from my own pocket and about 60% is from my scholarship. I figured I worked this hard to be graduating from school, might as well have fun getting there.

Oh and if you actually had a timeline/diary of when I buy gear - it always never fails that I acquire new gear AFTER a big exam or AFTER a pivotal event at school. I just took two 8 hour exams these past 2 weeks for my medical license and that's the reason why I got antsy and bought the Cary 05.

Not sure if you are thinking of the wrong Wilson, but this is not Wilson Audio with the Sophias/WattPuppy... this is Wilson Benesch with the Torus. I forgot who I was talking to on hard with regards to this subwoofer, but this thing is MEAN! WOW! If I had the money, I'd drop it on this sub.

I know there's someone about 10 miles from me who has it and we have conversed over email so that I could come by to listen to his Torus, but I just have not gotten around to it. People say this is "it" for those who are truly discriminating with regards to bass performance and after reading about the technology going into this particular subwoofer, I wouldn't be surprised.

With regards to the ML Subs, yes, I've heard all of them. I think they are very good and would be a great sub if I needed one. I've been a fan of the Depth and the Descent for a long time now. However, because I don't need one nor do I want to settle... the Torus is the sub for me. It might take me until I become an attending though, but that damn sub will be mine someday.

nooooo! analog ftw, if you wan't to capture the nice analog sound of your vinyl you could to it with tape. i still have my tape deck and like the nice sound it produces. just clean the tape heads and use a demagnetising tape and your good to go.

I might be selling my chair this week to make room for the ultimate listening chair from my parents, so I may not have the most luxurious place for your behind. However, we'll just do what I always did and pull the computer chair back to where the sweet spot is.

Hell yeah man! COME OVER! If possible, maybe you can meet the other Loop Audiophiles... like I said, we have a small group of guys in the Loop (of Chicago) where we visit each other to hang out and chill.

Do you like the noise, degradation, and horribly non-flat frequency response as well? Tape is a terrible media.

maybe i've got used to the "analog sound", but i think you never heard a good cassette recording. listen to a good cassette (CrO2 or better) recorded on a good deck from vinyl and say you didn't like the nice and authentically sound from the cassette. imo a digital recorder isn't capable of capturing all the analog goodness from an analog source.

and dolby s did a great job on the last tape decks getting rid of the noise.

i know tapes have a lot of shortcomings but as well have digital formats, ..... to each his own i guess.

If the "analog sound" is rolled off lows and over pronounced highs you can keep it.

I've listened to a million tapes of all qualities and with every type of DNR under the sun. I'll take a CD over all of them. SACD/DVD-A even moreso.

Not sure if you are thinking of the wrong Wilson, but this is not Wilson Audio with the Sophias/WattPuppy... this is Wilson Benesch with the Torus. I forgot who I was talking to on hard with regards to this subwoofer, but this thing is MEAN! WOW! If I had the money, I'd drop it on this sub.

Hey guys, I felt like sharing... I just ditched the Sony receiver and got myself an Onkyo. Now I need a couple more Polks for the rear, a good center channel and a nice powered sub. I'm glad it's Christmas time
I really can't believe how much clearer and richer the sound is on this Onkyo vs. the Sony I had... the Onkyo pushes my Polk's nicely. Who knows what I'll end up wanting next, this audio thing just sucks you in don't it

That's the scariest thing I've ever seen.

The beauty is in the technology and design of the Torus subwoofer. People who click on that link probably don't read up on what makes the Torus a super special subwoofer. One has to understand that it is the only subwoofer I know of that enables the woofer to act like a magenetostat panel. It causes a flux of magnetic fields on both sides of the woofer and allows for instant stop/start of the woofer. Sealed, superbly designed.... the Torus is the sub of dreams.

SVS, Martin Logan subs, REL, JL Audio, and even the Velodyne Digital Drive series have absolutely nothing on the Torus.
