Doesn't woofer cut out at 75% volume and the spring connectors are very weak on these? Hey they are FREE though.:D Just curious because I think I read that somewhere.

yea I think I read that too, but I usually don't get it too loud, cuz of neigbors, my ears, etc.

I used to use speakers like that, Technics and KLH 3-ways with 12" woofers, and I'd listen loud enough to burn the woofers. Heh. What crappy sounding speakers they were (at any volume) though.

But they were better than nothing. ;)
 
Hey Nighted... how do you like that Big Joe amp?
I was thinking I might get one and power a pair of these with it. I would also need a sub, do you have yours hooked up to the Big Joe too, or how does that work?
I really like your speakers and your setup... nice.

The Big Joe is fantastic. I've had a lot of gear over the years and this is the best sounding amp I've ever owned. As a matter of fact, it's probably the only real audiophile quality amp I've owned. It blows my $900 JVC away. :)

Those speakers would work just fine. I definitely recommend a sub, although the Big Joe can do just fine without it. I biwired the banana plugs at the back of the amp and did a high level connection to my sub. Believe it or not, this little system pounds (I can easily shake the walls before hitting 4), but what astounds me most is the detail and realism I'm now hearing. Big Joe is worth every penny. Actually, they're not charging enough. ;)

I can vouch for this as well. I don't own the big joe, but I do own the fubar III usb dac + headphone amp and it's an awesome little device. I've been very pleased with firestone-audio's quality. audiophileproducts.com is where I bought my fubar and the customer service is outstanding. I emailed them on a sunday night with a question and half an hour later I got a response from todd. really great

Thanks for the input guys, now I really want a Big Joe.
I was also looking into the Cute BEYOND headphone amp and the Fubar III since I have a few sets of 'phones I'd like to power too.
I am in the market for some good new audio gear, but I'd like it to keep a relatively small footprint on my desk... these seem like they would fit just about right. I was expecting to see a heavy price tag on the Big Joe after reading about it, but nope :D

The Fubar III is great, at least for my needs. I definitely did not want to spend a fortune on a DAC but I wanted quality as well. I think I found that with the fubar. Here's some pics since this is a pics thread after all:

I'm also getting a Cute Beyond. But first I'll grab a Tube Head and a Spitfire.

I'll get one Supplier also, just to check it out as it's supposed to make a big difference with the Spitfire as well as the Cute Beyond.

What is your opinion of the Supplier and is it worth the extra money?

Yes, I think it's worth the money. There is definitely an audible difference when using the supplier. It's hard to describe, I guess you could say the sound is more controlled and precise. Then again this stuff is pretty subjective so how much of a difference you hear will depend.

This guy wrote a review on the supplier. He suggests that you buy it later so you can truly hear the difference it makes.

I was planning on getting one and trying it out anyway, I'm sure it would add a lot of headroom. Gotta love the money back guarantee.

I want to power a pair of bookshelf speakers and a decent sub and my headphones, so what all would I need to accomplish this? I haven't settled on which speakers to buy at the moment, but I do have a pair of Insignia BS-2111's that I've been using. My headphones are AKG K701's, Sony MDR-V6's, and a pair of Grado SR-80's.

Well, I'd say all you need is the Big Joe and one of the headphone amps. Which head phone amp you get depends on what you want to use it for. If you get the Fubar III, then you can only use it with your computer and any other computer as long as it has a USB port. If you get the Cute Beyond then you can not only use it with your computer, but also with any portable device, CD player, or whatever. If you have a good sound card, you probably don't need the DAC. But if you want the best of both I'd suggest getting the Cute Beyond and one of the DACs, either the Fubar or the Spitfire. Fubar has the USB input, Spitfire has optical and coaxial. Maybe just get them all. ;)

As far as speakers, I'd suggest a good set of reference quality speakers. If you can get your hands on a pair of Wharfdale Diamond 9.1s, you'd probably be in heaven.

Oh and those Wharfdales you mentioned are beautiful... I found some for $230 so they're definitely going on the list.

Well a DAC converts a digital signal to an analog signal. The better the DAC, the better the analog conversion will sound.
 
Nighted, i was wondering how did you hook up your sub to the Big Joe? Or is hooked up through something else? Also would a pair of acoustech HT-64 and a H100 Subwoofer do justice?

I used a high level connection by wiring the banana plugs with 2 wires instead of one. As usual, one wire from each plug goes to a speaker and the other to the respective channel/post on the sub.

The sensitivity on those Acoustechs is very impressive. If you want to get those and the sub I think they seem like a great deal considering the specs and the price.

Don't get the Supplier unless you plan on getting a headphone amp or a DAC. You don't need it!
