Yeah, that glossy piano rosewood makes a nice mirror. You can see about 1/4 of my loft in that pic, including my messy, unmade bed. :p

This is my living room. I'm pretty much obsessed with sound and music, and this is one of many setups to come i'm sure.
The highlights:
Pioneer elite VSX-29TX amp/receiver.
Auzentech x-meridian sound card
Technics sl-2100 mkII w/ shure m44-7 or N97xE
Fluance 5.1 w/12 inch 200 watt sub and bipolar surrounds

My computer is connected to my amp over fiber optic. The TT is run through a preamp and a kaoss pad, which then goes to the input on my sound card. Unhappy with my choices of desks and their incompatibility with good speakers, I made the desk myself. My monitor was supposed to be replaced by a 30 inch apple display (which would fit on my desk perfectly), but i decided to wait until the next update. Overall the setup is satisfactory... but next time it will be better!!!

Have heard much about the Fluance brand... but never really read a review about them. How's your set compared to other sets of similar price? How much was it again?

I've actually thought about this a great deal

While i'm not totally disappointed, I think you can do a lot better for your money.However, with these things it's really difficult to tell where the limitations of your system are. The best sounding speakers i've ever heard were the Tannoy reveal studio monitors (which cost around the same for two speakers), but they were hooked up through a '70s marantz amp playing from a clean record with a nice needle and table. I'm inclined to believe such a simplistic setup is more likely to be ideal than the super long chain of travel required by music going through my system.

That said, i've setup my own Thorens table with the m97 on it run through a solid state '70s marantz amp and I still feel the Tannoys outperform. Again though there's an issue with the stylus used, as different styli definitely have different acoustics.

In the end I just came to this logic: For the same amount of money, you get either the fluance with 10 necessarily cheaper drivers (and fancy enclosures), or the tannoy with 4 drivers and standard enclosures. Of course the markup on the latter could be huge, but professional studio equipment manufacturers' survival is entirely dependent on the accurate sound reproduction of their equipment.

Still, the difference between "good" and "pretty good" sound takes a lot of close listening and even then remains Highly subjective. The only genuine problem i've had is a resonant vibration of the enclosure when playing classical music with an emphasis on the violin at earsplitting levels, so it's not really an issue. The surrounds and sub are fantastic, though those components don't require a ton of accuracy. For the mid, if you're going to play a lot of 5.1 i think you'd want to spend more...

If i had to buy again, i'd probably just buy the Tannoys instead of the towers and keep the rest of the fluance setup, since i don't watch very many movies. Oh, and i think overall it was around 800, not sure though.

I was just wondering, how come you have everything on their sides? And how come the floorstanders are on their sides under the table?

Do you run all 4 speakers at the same time?
 
For space constraints I put them on their sides, I used to have the floorstanding ones upright but now with the new desk, thats where they had to go.

I run them in whats called "5 Stereo" on my receiver which is basically a 5 way stereo upmix. When watching movies I run it in DTS or Dolby Digital and the floorstanding serve as my rears.

In my post above it explains how I use them in the setup, being on the floor doesn't really matter too much, I can still hear them just fine, and as they are set to be surround speakers it doesn't impact the overall balance too much with them down there.
 
^^ I think they are implying that you are not getting the soundstage you could be (and should be) getting. In other words, placement of instruments in front of you, etc. Having a table top directly above them, as well as sitting roughly 3-4 feet above them, prevents the drivers from sending the sound towards you in the proper way.

Think of it like a movie theater; you don't sit and turn your head to the side 90 degrees to watch the flick, you stare dead-on. Also, most people don't like to sit right next to the screen, because they have to stair up like 60 degrees.
 
Oh well I knew that the sound stage was all wrong but in my situation I had to compromise, there really wasn't any other place to put them, and I'd rather use them in a bad location than not use them at all.
 
This is my first ever sound system.. and its missing a few things, A subwoofer, and a display ( that has more than DVI) but here it is. cords are messy too :)

Yeah man... monoprice does rock. My friend upstairs gets all his cables from monoprice and he's been trying to get me to buy stuff from them ever since. Too bad I'm ok with what I got, radioshack cables.

Anyway, nice system.... are you hooking up the Ultra satellites to the receiver? That's not an Ultra center is it?
 
Dudeyourlame, very nice setup. i think u should move ur 360 tho seems like blocking tons of the 360 vents in that location.

Its actually about an 3/4 of an inch away from the bar, im not too concerned too much ive ran it for all day and it's done fine

They're all klipsche junk, they sound alright for now, at least all 5 channels work on this reciever, they came from the promedia 5.1 surround system which the left rear simply didn't put anything out, and center was fuzzy. i coulda bought a switch for the HDTV im getting but i wanted something bigger /better than 5.1 in a box
 
Sold my desktop recently so I've got a more simplified setup. The speakers are a little lower than ideal but they're the only stands I have.

I think we have the same Ikea table! Nice speaks and system... definitely looks like it gives good sound. I think your ears appreciate the effort you put into positioning them using the stands.

I do really really really need a new receiver/amp though. That one stopped responding to remote controls a couple weeks back. I also discovered that the sub out doesnt' work right anymore. As it is now I run my speaker outputs through the sub and let it filter out the bass for itself (it has a handy dandy knob to specify which Athena speakers I have so i tknows where to set the crossover).

Works for now, but there are always upgrade plans.
 
You did some serious down-sizing, Schap.

Got a new PC on the way or are you gonna run with this setup for awhile?

well.. since I got the 360 I've been doing so little pc gaming that the desktop was sort of pointless. I have the laptop + docking station + 320GB usb drive.

So I sold the desktop + 22" lcd to get

Now I keep my gaming on the tv and use the laptop for my browsing and music. I've still got the other speakers they just aren't being used right now.
 
Nice, shiny new LCD TV!!!!

I'd do the same as you if consoles could use a mouse/keyboard instead of those controllers.

I find the FPS games made for the 360 are fine with no kb/mouse. I'm also not a huge FPSer since i'm not too big in to multiplayer stuff. I'm just dying for some good rpgs (common mass effect) and will probably end up with a ps3 before long for more of them.

On the audio note.. has anyone listened to

I could use a stereo receiver for my tv with 2 of my leftover speakers (and a remote that works). Then if I upgrade to full surround again in the future, I can use the stereo one for PC use.

Just some cheap Pioneers, great sound but not bassy.
I got a 7.1 Onkyo setup also, but don't have it setup because I am in process of getting new TV/HT table item thing.

I got some SR-80s and HD485s also:

You may see the "MAKE OFFER" sticker on the Pioneer.
They thought it was broke and his offer was 5 dollars, I should have lowered it to 3, anyway, can't have A and B speakers on at the same time (same with most receivers), but all of the channels work.
The CDP was bought hella long time ago for 20 dollars. (I think I only gave him 10 of it, lol, he was a crackhead)
 
four of those with the matching center and my pb12-nsd... well the crack of a stick nade in DOD:source will make your hand shake :D

well worth the $100 or so i payed for the lot, they dive at a bit under 100hz but crossed at 80 they sound great on my game rig.

A few years back, I was this close to buying the floorstanding version of those speakers. Those were kickass man!

Heh, I turned on my Onkyo system (sub is only thing still connected) and WOW, I forgot how much bass that sub had, tomorrow I am picking up my new stand.
This is what it used to look like, it needs a stand:




See how the right speaker is on the sub :O, had to put a towel few layers thick in order not to hear vibrations!!


As you can tell the 7.1 system in my small ass room is unbelievable.

HAH, just got an idea, make the Pioneers my rears and just have a 5.1 system, but then I wouldn't have a budget 2.0 system anymore.
