The Z-5500 compared to my home cinema kit (see sig). My home cinema fills the whole room with sound and it is very easy to distinguish from which direction each sound has come from in surround sound.
The Z-5500 however cannot fill my room with sound, it works best in close range. In close range, the sound is superb and surround sound is amazing. However, if you place the speakers very far away or even try to use the Z-5500 speakers as a home cinema for a whole room, they dont work quite as well.

For using with a PC, I would strongly recommend the Z-5500 speakers, it would be very hard to beat them. However, there are better alternatives if you want to use the Z-5500 as a home cinema for a whole room :)

i agree i rearranged my Z-5500 far away and it sounded pretty bad but when close range it sounded much better

After having looked at MANY speakers, we went with a more obscure brand, but the quality of the sound is probably the best value for money in this type of gear... HUGE difference from old Quad setup. Our favorite speakers were the B&W 802Ds, but they are more expensive and the amplification is very demanding (would have needed monoblock amplificaiton). The Fathom subwoofer is, without a doubt, amazing. CD player remains solid, and Sonos is very neat. Watched 300 on DVD and was blown away by the sound and the excellent scaling provided by the D2 Processor.

Pain to setup though: the amp barely fits in the rack (22" long) and it's pretty heavy (100+LBS). The subwoofer is about 125LBS, speakers are also very heavy too... all wired up with balanced XLR (which cost more than the speakers of our old system lol)

I personally thought that they were the ribbon tweeter variety, but what's really interesting is that the two 180mm drivers take care of bass only; the midrange is done with the "1 × 50/105 mm ring radiator with flat aluminum honeycomb diaphragm" that is around the tweeter.

They boast frequency response of 28hz to 50000hz.

The midrange "ring" is usually only offered on the higher end 600 series, but because this is a special anniversary edition, they've included it in there lower cost model (the 600 series are available for 10k+ CDN).

I'm looking to replace the speakers within the year. They were free and don't sound half bad, but we'll see how much money I have to play with. It's running off USB to my Constantine+ to a JVC Super-A Power Amplifier. Still have to work on my switchbox/preamp so that I don't have to disconnect everytime I want to use headphones/speakers.

Be sure to tilt that center channel down when you get the shelf.

Also those B&W speakers are killing me inside the cabinet like that! :( If i were you i would no doubt get some speaker stands, and have the B&W hugging the left and the right of the cabinet. Its nowhere near optimal placement but it just seems so silly in cabinets on glass shelfs and an enclosed area, which is terrible for vibrations.

Overall though that is one pimpin' living room, looks nice as hell! Obviously its built more for looks than for home theater, which any sane person would have but home theater enthusiasts dont care if the room looks ugly as hell as long as it sounds good. :D
 
Putting speakers in corners or near to walls is bad. Putting them INSIDE cabinets is just plain stupid! With the amount of space that you have, you could easily position them on stands in the optimum positions, rather than stuffing them into cabinets like that.

Anyway, I picked up a pair of Mission 732's yesterday to replace the Sony SS-MB250H's that I've had for the past couple of years. In a room this small, I have no choice but to put the cabs in corners :( And that's even after I re-arranged the room & shevled 2x LCDs!

I think that putting the BWs in the cabinet is causing much of what you dont like about the sound. It will surely add to the "boxiness" that you described in our PMs. I think that the cabinet is causing some localization of the sound and is certainly not helping the speaker disappear.

I think the best move for you is not to get another speaker, it's to somehow get those speakers of yours outside the cabinet and on some stands that match the entertainment center.

My 2 cents.

Pinipig523 is probably spot on JacobC1983. Although I have not heard the 680 series, the 600 series bookshelfs are VERY dependent on placement! I can't imagine the 680 series is much different from what I saw.

Even putting them on stands and moving them outside of the entertainment center might not help, because the entertainment center in back would still be affecting the sound for the worse. Still, would probably be better than what you have now.
 
I've been just playing with my speaker placement right now to see if I like one over the other. So far, it doesn't sound much different, but the biggest change is how big the "sweet spot" is. The way it currently is, there's only one spot that's centered. If I tilt my head slightly in either direction, you can clearly hear the "speaker", but in the sweet spot, everything sounds so fluid. =T I can't wait til I get to my budget and can splurge on some new gear.
 
I guarantee that my setup will blow anything here out of the water (Well maybe not all, but at least half :D).

Onix X-LS, Pioneer A-35R amp, Oritek Zhaolu D2.5 DAC

Man they sound so nice for music :eek: Not as detailed as my K701s but certainly more fun! The headphone out on the A-35R is also very good. I need to do a more indepth comparison with my headfive but I think the H5 will be sold.

Any tips on where to put these things? Or does my current setup image OK? I'm kinda strapped for space with this desk :(
 
Wow, your X-LS are beautiful!! What kind of wood is that? I thought mine in piano rosewood were top of the line, but yours look just as great.

They're Mascarey Natural Satin. You'd never guess that they are b stock either huh ;)

I hate to say it, but he's right. My first pair of X-LS were B-stock, too. They had several cracks just like that, some of which circled around the speakers (see below). I asked Sean Parque about it and he was mortified. He insisted the cracks were not part of the wood and offered to exchange them for brand new X-LS with the same finish. It took several months until they had more in stock, but eventually he sent new speakers and paid return shipping on my cracked ones. Can't beat that kind of service. I suggest you look over the speakers to see if there are any more cracks. E-mail pics to Sean. Maybe he'll exchange them for you.
