digitalmind , how much did that cost? Do you recomend it for the 595s? I have a pair hooked up to my X-Fi front panel ( fatal1ty version ) just wondering...thx

My Gilmore Lite is sitting on top of my tower below the table.

From left to right, Sony MDR-SA5000, AKG 240s, Sennheiser HD580. I also have the Sennheiser 457 put away.

The DAC was $120, the amp $170, plus $30 shipping.

I can't really judge if I would recommend this setup for a HD-595, because I haven't had different DAC's and amps (aside from a home baked cmoy), but there is definitely a large improvement coming from onboard sound and cmoy. The ground noise, beeping, and static from the onboard sound are gone. The detail has improved greatly. Vocals have never sounded so nice.

I think I could live without the amp for the HD-595's (it helps the sound, tightens up the bass and just gives it a bit fuller sound, but it's not as great as an improvement as just the DAC is), but I'm planning on getting a harder to drive (think HD-650) headphone soon.

I don't think you'll see as much as an improvement as I have, because you allready have a nice source, and the HD-595's still sound nice without an amp.

Digitalmind:
What kind of power does that amp run off of? Does it have a single or double 9v? or is it sometihng else?

Wall wart, 24volts. There's a battery powered version aswell. That one isn't a class A anymore though, see www.firestone-audio.com. :)

However, I think there's room in mine to squeeze in 2 9 volt batteries, it should run fine off that. Potential modding to be done here! :D

So I own a set of Bose Triport headphones. I got them about two years ago. I like them despite how many of you don't care for them. They are the most comfortable headphones I've ever worn though (and yes I've gone to some AV places and tried on and listened to many Sennheisers).

Currently, I just plug the headphones into the headphone jack on my Marantz SR7500 receiver.

Is there really any advantage to getting a seperate headphones amplifier over using my "high end" receiver? (quoted because that's what many people refer to it as; even though there are receivers out there that cost 5 to 10 times as much)

Ryan

I personally don't hate the products bose makes.. I hate the prices they charge :(
I really would kill a man for a pair of quietcomfort 2.0s... maybe.

Agreed... if the QC2's were priced at less then $50 they would be a pretty good deal.

If they were priced that low everyone in the world would probably own a pair...

here is a refresh of my gear
2006_0316test0033.jpg

in the foreground you have koss sprotapros, koss ksc-75, then senn hd201. On my DIY headphone stand i have L-R audio technica A900LTD,A500,AD2000

 strikeout

Can you describe the AD2000 as compared to A900LTD(which is my only point of reference in hi-fi cans realm)? I am primarily interested in sound, but e.g. comfort & build quality discussion would be cool too. Which one do you end up using most? (and for what purposes?). Did you hear any other high-end open cans, such as Senn HD 600/650, AKG K601/701, Grados, etc.? How would you compare AD2000 to those?

Thanks in advance :D (i know it's a lot of questions)

i've pretty much heard them all. I was lucky enough to attend a bay area head-fi meet. They basically had everything under sun including an orpheus with the matching amp. How does does the ad2000/a900ltd compare?Initial impressions are that the a900ltd is a continuation of AT sound ( foward sounding with bass and clear highs, lacking in the mids.) The ad2000 is more akg(601/701) style more on the mids and more neutral sounding. Both have that forward sound similar to hd595 but with a bigger soundstage and instrument seperation. Bass is clear but doesnt have that boomy subwoofer impact like the A500. Everyone says that the A series have recessed mids which it does but the ad2000 isnt. Its kinda weird that it isolates the vocals very well. Its almost like you can hear the artists voice in the sound booth and the music track being added seperately. If you hate siblence like me, a900ltd is the best out of the AT cans ive heard. If you like mids, Ad2000 is the best. If you like boomy bass with impact A500 is the best.

contruction wise, the ad2000/900ltd both have metal earcups. The 3d headband on the ad2000 is metal. Both have a rubber 'y' cord as opposed to a cloth one side on the a500. The pads on the ad2000 are velour and 900ltd have a1000 pads that dont flake off from wear.

hehe thanks man, dont go to head-fi. i went for gaming phones and now look at me. I would have never guessed in a million years id spend more than $100 on cans let alone a few hundred for a single one.

It's to late. I'm skudmunky at head-fi with 1093 posts to my name already. Fortunetly, my parents won't let me spend any more money on headphones, so I'm safe for the moment.

I went to head-fi with some sen hd212 pros and sony mdr q55 clips; just looking for some decent ear buds as the clips didnt fit very well once I got glasses. Ended up with um... 2 amps/dt770/shuree2c/x-fi. From ~70 dollars total in headphones for portable/home use (and happily) to ~500 in a few months. head-fi is evil

Of course this forum made me buy a rapter but thats the only "above and beyond" thing I purchased that I dont really need for what I use my computer for i think...

Head-Fi is evil. In 100 posts it made me spend $950. That's $9,50 a post. Stay away from that place.

Well, I've spent 180 after 1096 posts, so I'm not nearly as badly hit. I'm shooting for Headphoneus Supremus by my birthday (april 28) :D

Approximate costs of the Dynamite? I've looked at custom builders like SFT and they're around $1500-2500.

And by the way I am set on the K1000, I'm getting pair for sure!

I probably spent like $400~$500 in parts for my dynamite... gonna have to spend like another $100 to finish a proper powersupply...

of course my dynamite has no volume control... but if you dont mind two knobs thats not a big deal... if you want one knob you need a 4ch pot, or 4ch stepped attenuator, and thats hard to find and expensive...

$300 Behringer DEQ2496

Eh, the HE90 is nowhere on the list so it isn't even worth reading *shrug*

sdgserv, I can't see a picture, if there is one. After looking at your sig I am jealous though. :p

edit: jodiah, that was my background for a while at one point.

And my friends think I'm crazy!

$100 - HD280 Pro
(+ $2.50 for blue tak :))
$70 for HD497
$70 for SR60
$15 for KSC75
$55 for MisterX MINT
$30 for AV710

= $342.50.

I want to spend ~$200 more on a DT770 or A900, but I'm afraid to drop that kind of cash without hearing them first. If a Head-Fi meet comes up in Portland, OR or Seattle, WA, though, I'm afraid I'm doomed (because, yes, I would drive four hours to go to a big enough meet).

BTW that Head-Fi wallpaper is my desktop now. :(

I found them on head-fi a couple years ago. Here's a couple more for the artsy type...
