I just took the plunge! Got 2 XFX GTX 280's off eBay from MWave. Figured that would be safe as far was the warranty as MWave is a major reseller. $670 per card but I'm off Tuesday which is when I should get them, they said they'd ship tomorrow overnight.

Let the games begin!

your two videocards are worth more than my whole computer. what did you upgrade from?

Upgrading from a single 9800 GX2. Since I have a SLI 790 Ultra motherboard, CrossFire wasn't much of an option for this rig. I might pick up a 4870 X2 or two for my Q6600 rig that I still need to put together.

Yes, the GTX 280 is looking like all that, but still, the sig rig is my high end toy for a while and not much is going to beat 2 280's except three for a while.

Grats... I have one coming from Amazon.com hopefully shipping tomorrow, with overnight shipping :D, so I'll probably have mine in on Tuesday as well ($650 + $4 Prime overnight).

Congrats to you as well!:D

Yeah, I missed getting it from Amazon and I let my baser instincts get the best of me so I overpaid, but I paid a LOT more for my pair of 7800 512 GTX's 2.5 years ago and they were a waste, so it wasn't all that bad for a pre-launch purchase.

Truth is if you have the money... it's not THAT much more on the cost of these puppies  ... no one can say you overpaid but you :). If you wanted to get them right away and be assured you would, then you got a good deal if you ask me :D.

Thanks, and looking forward to results, especially if mine doesn't come like it should!

Just curious, What games do you plan on playing and at what resolution? Besides Crysis, seems like overkill, buts thats just me. Let us know how they work when they come in.

Congrats on the purchase. I need to sell my GX2, if I can get $400 for the card then I'll get the 280 otherwise I'll keep my setup the way it is.

A little future proofing for the most part so the list GoldenTiger made makes sense to me as a good reason and I'm toying with the idea of a 30" monitor, but its not really in the budget this year.

And I REALLY want to play Crysis in all of its glory. Yes, its only one game but others are on the way.

I'm toying with the idea too, but I have an S-IPS 20" LCD that is really really nice color-wise and sharpness/etc., so I'd want something similar and that would be reallllyyyy expensive. So, right now I game at 1680x1050, where high AA and AF should help push the card.

I'm finally playing through Crysis now that I got it for $20 on a hot deal, and am loving it... about halfway through the game, I hear it goes downhill a bit in the second half but it's still very fun to me. It may only be one game, but it's giving me a lot more fun than I've had with one in recent memory, and more will be on the way that are also graphically demanding :D.

Yeah, it's a mix of games already out, and coming soon, but I found my setup wasn't doing it for me in them with the kind of settings stated (it was an 8800GT SLI). So, I'm hoping the move to the GTX 280 will make it happen.

- e2200 (nehalem in 6 mo?)
- 680i
- corsair dominator 2 gbs
- gtx 280
- 650 psu
- random crap crap crap

Just want to have the best gpu to make sure my fps never dips below a 100 in cs source, especially in scrims where its important. cl_cmdrate 100 only really works if u get 100 fps + all the time. Also play through crysis and other fps just for fun.

Parts for a single GTX 280 + Evga 750i FTW + Q6600 combo should be getting here next weekend assuming I'm able to order everything on the 18th. Considering the rig I'm coming from (in sig), this will be major for me!

I'm in a similar boat, where 8800GT SLI doesn't entirely cut it at 1920*1080. Normally I'd rather not upgrade so quickly (this system was built in March), but I really want my rig to handle, at 1080p, whatever games that I choose to run on it for a good while.

I am with you there as well. 1920x1200 with 8800gt sli is fine for most games, but it is annoying in some cases, like coh in dx10 mode and crysis. Also in the citadel when playing mass effect.

i'm really thinking of jumping from my 9800gx2 to the GTX 280. the 9800gx2 runs games great, however, i have a dell 30'' so I game at 2560x1600. i occasionally get choking and stuttering in team fortress 2 due to the 256 bit bus. i'm hoping that the GTX 280 has alleviated this problem with hi res gaming

i debating if i really want to replace my 8800GT SLI with a GTX280, i only play 2 games regularly (AoC, CS1.6)

AoC doesnt need really good fps to play well. i already have the game MAXXED with custom adv video options.. and is very playable. curious on numbers with a 280 and AoC, and how the 1gb vram/512bus contributes to smoother play.

I'll be adding two 280s to the system in my sig if the reviews have me hitting the add to cart button. :p

Same here. I already have a TJ07 on order which should make for a perfect home for a pair.

. cl_cmdrate 100 only really works if u get 100 fps +.

explain, cl_cmd has nothing to do with FPS? it is how often data is sent between you and the server?

or more so that if you have 100FPS, you can see as a hit hi's someone and send the data are in sync somehow? either way if your FPS are at 70FPS and your cl @ 100, the damage is done...

hmm i may have to pick one up in the morning*

*If launched!

I think that's a done deal. MWave said that had 8 in stock yesterday on eBay that would ship today. They are now all gone. I don't think MWave would piss off people that just bought a total of $5300 from their eBay store if they didn't have the goods.

I'm thinking of replacing my hd2900xt with a GTX 280. I'm not sure however, since dual 4850s are supposed to outperfrom that, and we have the 4870 and 4870X2 still to launch.

Agreed.

If you're playing on a 33 tick server, the cmd rate will default down to 33 to match the server (because that's the max response anyway.)

If you're playing on a 100 tick server, cmdrate 100 will put you right in line with the server for better registration on hits.

It has nothing to do with FPS as Guv mentioned.

I don't know for sure as I have no relationship with nVidia or AMD other than average Joe Customer. But if you really expect a pair of 4850's to beat a 280 at anything beyond 3DMark don't hold your breath.

That's not to say that a 4850 or a pair won't do well at lower resolutions and settings, but a 4850 just doesn't have enough memory bandwidth to beat a 280 at higher settings. It will become clearer in a few hours.

The 4780/4870x2 might have something else to offer. We shall see in 2 months.

Well OBR of xtremesystems said he was disappointed of the performance the GTX 280 had, and he said that dual 4850s were beating that, he didn't explicitly say it was 3dmark or anything. As he is an nvidia fanboy I wouldn't presume he is pessimistic about the results of the green team. But the lead of the ati cards were only up to a certain resolution, at 1920*1200 the 280 would have caught up with the dual 4850s. But as my dell 2007WFP/philips 200wp7es only supports a wsxga+ resolution I don't know.

post some pics if you really have the card plus game benchmarks on crysis. like they say, A thread is useles without pics :)

Bit off topic but yes it does have to do with your fps.

Nehalem will be a new socket, so you'll need a new motherboard in 6mo as well.

This was just to get started. I should have mine tomorrow. They are already bought and paid for.

That extremetech review also made me wonder how they got an 8800 Ultra to consume nearly 100W more

Heck, I switched to a 260 earlier in the day and just now back to the 280... for good :). Couldn't resist its power :p.
