emailthatguy said:because they are. some people find lean sexier than highly modded. its HARD for the novice at desktop modding to get these things to work and not take up a friggin ton of resources. my mac conversion i did for example, that was a combination of 8 different system file mods, 8 applications, and a LOT of reconfiguration of half the config files for said applications. it takes a buttload of research and a buttload of time to get it right w/o frying windows beyond recognition let alone make it something that is intuitive, fast, and less of a resource hog than explorer (well in the case of shell replacements, thats the goal anyway).
sexiest desktop ive EVER seen in my life, for the record, was a windows95 box back in the day that booted up notepad instead of explorer to keep things as lean as possible for games. that single mod, got me into desktop modding forever.
Mainly I wanted to share an idea that I got recently from a walk-in to create a separate user account with all visual effects, background, screensaver, sounds, and tray apps. disabled to speed up gaming. It also allows me to clear out all the game shortcuts from my browsing account as well as create MagicTune and RivaTuner profiles just for gaming.
