Portal 2 PC User Review Backlash

Never really liked Portal. It's a nice game, but they took the "cute little robot" thing way too far to the point where it becomes a negative aspect of the game. Also, the fact that Valve is still using the same 7-odd-year old engine shouldn't surprise anyone that this was a console port. Since L4D, Valve has become just another dev that pushes out games.

These are different cases.

All those games now have their prices reduced because their development costs have been amortized and it's safe/sensible for the developer/publisher to drop the price to continue getting sales.

I gave the launch price of Thief and didn't even mention Baldur's Gate's price. Is a fantastic 6 hour game for $50 worth more than an equally fantastic 10 hour game?

Judging a game by length is shoehorning. It's a damn good game, if you enjoy it it was worth your money. Whether it was $10 or $1000. It is entertainment, it is meant to entertain you. At no point should entertainment pretend to be frugal, it is an entirely extraneous expense that you don't need to survive. If it entertained you, mission accomplished regardless of the sticker price.

Why does digital entertainment get a free pass for charging a lot of money for so little usage time? It's not an entirely extraneous expense when you have other options that are cheaper and will give as much or more entertainment. It's also not just a question of whether it was entertaining. Not everyone can or wants to spend $50 every time a good game comes out. These people would rather buy the fun $50 game that keeps them occupied for the longest amount of time than the fun $50 game that will leave them wanting another game three days later.

I'm not saying that Portal 2 isn't worth $50. I'm saying that it's not worth it to me as well as other posters in this thread. I just find it amusing that some people are incapable of seeing another person's point of view and enjoy the "debate". :D

I'm sure the guys at Valve would tell you that $50 to play the game they spent thousands of hours and millions of dollars producing is a pretty sweet value. The price is irrelevant to the game itself, which was spectacular.

Of course they would. They'd also tell you that L4D2 cost them millions of dollars and was worth $50 even though, like Portal 2, the engine and art assets were already mostly done.

Again, where does this console port BS come from? If were released only on the PC it would have been the same version of the Source engine Portal 2 is on now. Everyone's acting like this is Capcom porting over Street Fighter 4 or Resident Evil 5.

Valve has always been about scalability and stability across a wide range of hardware at the cost of not having the latest in graphics technology.

This "OMGz!! cONSOL PORT!!!111!!" is starting to look like the Salem witch hunts. Every game can't go multi-platform without people shitting all over the PC version. Can't wait til Battlefield 3, RAGE and Elder Scrolls 5 come out...that should be rich.

I certainly understand the viewpoint, I just don't "get" why you would want to view it that way. I buy the sequel to the game that will give me the greatest joy or the one I have the most interest in, not the greatest time span of fun. If I based my entertainment purchases on how long they lasted rather than how much fun they were, I would be a sad person.

Of course no one wants to spend $50 on every game, that gets expensive. We'd all like to spend $0 on everything but that's not realistic, is it?

You can decide value on an individual basis. Portal 2 is worth a measly $50 even if it's "just" single digit hours long. The experience of a fine piece of media is intangible as far as price. Go talk to some book-worms. Even if good books are short and charge as much as long ones, they're still worth it. Because they're excellent

I think people just bitch and complain about anything these days. Portal 2 was one hell of a "console import".

Did it have it's downsides? Yea. Do I dislike the idea of the item-TF2-esque store? Yea. But who cares, the game was fine otherwise. Rabble rabble rabble.

Who are these people that buy day 1 launches and/or pre-order? I can't remember the last time I purchased a game over $3 that I didn't check metascore or read a review on first.

Metascores are now, and have been for a little while, less indicative of how good a game is and more so in the politics surrounding the game.

I don't buy day one much either. I wait for the GOTY, or the "complete pack", or "extended edition", or whatever these days. Especially if the game looks like it is going to have expansion DLC, (like anything from Bethesda).

sorry to say, if felt like a console port to me from the get go. Specially the menus. My wifewas bitching instantly as well cause it told her to plug in her playstation 3 controller....... yea..

My GF was surprised when I said I beat the game so quickly. After totalling my SP and CO-op time, its safe to say that this has been a short game play experience.

For the price, I really did wish there was more.

I'm not griping about the quality, but on what we consider a typical game rig, I doubt the levels we played were that demanding making you wonder if the puzzle complexity and map size was constrained by the console limits rather than PC limits. That's what makes consolitis. I mean, look especially during the escape runs and tell me honestly that it was necessary to go thru a complete loading screen for the section you ran by in <15 seconds...

Even if it isnt a console port, it sure looks like PC was an afterthought, the design was clearly for consoles. the consolized autosave, no FOV option, DLC, etc...

I'm playing this on PC and have had zero problems with the game and not to mention co-op is fun as hell! The game plays nicely and is very smooth with the same great gameplay (even better) than the first. I'm really enjoying portal 2 and haven't even gave a thought about console while playing besides playing with a console user co-op style.

you mean M&Ms?

Have fun paying $60 for your 4 hour console/pc games...I think you belong in the XBox 360 forums...

What does it matter to you if I pay $60 or not ....you're a sad, misinformed troll who would rather whine like a toddler rather than deal w/ the cold-hard fact that PC gaming is on life-support right now.

Take it back to 4chan and fire up a game a Minecraft...

It requires Quality + Quantity to get me to spend $50 on a game.

$50 isn't measly. That's 5 to 10 good games during a Steam sale that may each last longer and/or be as entertaining as one $50 game, a decent dinner with the wife, or an eighth. I can't even remember the last time I paid full price for a game as a few months or less of waiting is well worth saving 50% or more to me. I will pay $50 for a game but it has to be excellent and maintain it for longer than a few hours.

Books are a little different since the story is all that matters. I am still more likely to spend $7 on a 1000 page epic with an intricate storyline than I am on a 100 page novel that I'll blow through in an hour. Sure, I may miss out on a good story but I'm already enjoying another story for a longer amount of time. Quality + Quantity. :D

The original Half-Life had autosaves in 1998. That game didn't even touch the consoles until three years later when it was released for the PS2.

Damn the lack of edit! To add to my previous post.

By the time I'm done with the cheaper, longer, and just as fun game or book the other shorter but still high quality game or book will likely be cheaper.

You don't know what ~ does, or what the developer console is do you?

Loving this thing on PC. Bought the PS3 version because I got both, can't beat that.

btw if you enable the console and type fov desire or something it shows what it's set at. Mine is 90 and that's just where I like it.

I even remember reading something about how it would adjust to your resolution and monitors and shit.

Valve knows what the fuck is up. Apart from their TF2 micro-transaction whoring they know how to make a game.

I'm sure the guys at Valve would tell you that $50 to play the game they spent thousands of hours and millions of dollars producing is a pretty sweet value. The price is irrelevant to the game itself, which was spectacular.

So Black Ops and CODMW2 are worth $90 each ($60 + $15 map pack +$15 map pack) because they cost $200 million to make, right?

Oh well then I am not going to buy it for any platform even though I love portal.

1 I don't want to play it on a crap console wtih crap gamepad with crap HD res and 5 year old slow ass GPU hardware..

2 I don't want to play a crap console port of it on PC since portal 1 was a PC game and the PC made it what it was.

So fuck you valve.

Can't tell if trolling....

It has been said many times the game is NOT a port. Once you understand this the healing can begin.

Ahh, screw you guys!! I'm temporarily poor and thus, cannot buy P2 just yet. Rest assured, I will have thee oh Portal 2... I will....

Reminds me of when people where saying the same crap about JC2. Which, before this game, was the example of how to do cross platform right. I imagine this is even better. I watched the first three levels in a Youtube walk through. I refuse to watch anymore. The writing is superb if the part with Steve Merchant is any indication.

I request a Valve Blog post that points and laughs at the all the little girls who have any kind of bitch about this game.

You see this kind of crap on SPUF all the time. That tells us one thing only. Children's parents can afford to buy them PCs also. Some still bitch that they can't play TF2 on their six year old machine. I bet they could if they would bother to change a setting. FFS, I can run that game on a P4 laptop.

Don't worry Valve. You had me at "Oh..It's you....":D

Haters gonna hate. Blast em with nerve gas.

Look, if you're shitting on the game.

The door is ---->

cause you aren't gonna win. I only beat single player and I have to say, it was witty, fun, and challenging in parts.

Can't wait to play Co-op and hope there's plenty of DLC in the future to keep the game fresh and enjoyable. By DLC I mean free maps, since they have the store for $, I think the maps should be free. Thats just my take on it, I'm sure they won't do that, since its got PS3/Xbox versions, and god knows if you piss in the direction of a console they charge you for the honor of spraying it back onto your foot.

How is this even a news story when real user review backlashes like Supreme Commander 2 go ignored? This is barely even a blip.

Because SupCom 2 was a massive downgrade from the first and further proved that Chris Taylor has no clue how to give people good games?

With the Valve Defense Force, it's just not just enough to call a Valve game good; it has to be "HOLY CRAP THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER".

And to anyone who feels that the game lacks in any way or didn't feel that they got their money's worth, it's "JUST LEAVE THE CONVERSATION IF YOU HATE THE GAME SO MUCH BECAUSE YOU'RE IMPOSSIBLE TO PLEASE. THIS DISCUSSION OF THE GAME IS ONLY FOR PEOPLE WHO LIKED THE GAME AND NOT FOR PEOPLE WHO HAD ANY OTHER OPINION OF THE GAME, AND YOU PROBABLY HAVEN'T EVEN PLAYED THE GAME ANYWAY, YOU LIAR".

It's like they feel the need to correct anyone who makes any disparaging remarks about Valve or Valve products, because anyone who doesn't feel as they do must be crazy, unreasonable, or unenlightened, or they're mysteriously an Enemy of Valve.

I wish they'd realize that their opinion that the game is amazing and Valve can do no wrong is no more valid than someone who feels that the game was underwhelming and Valve is headed in the wrong direction.

Quite frankly it's going both ways at the moment.

It's just how you voice your opinion. Most people are just plainly acting like trolls and pulling shit out of their ass. Stuff like misleading articles and others commenting from what they've read as facts doesn't help either. Sorta like how this all started on "Console Port" when that was disproven right away and yet people still use it as a reason to hate the game. It would help a lot too if /v/ wasn't bashing the game on purpose.

Good god! I have been playing this game all day on max settings and i am appalled... At how fucking awesome it is! Portal 2 is great. Truly great.

Ported games on the PC are always buggy, if not down right crappy. Mouse/keyboard action is crap, the graphics are skimped. What is there to love about a console port when a PC developed game is so much better? There need to be big warning lables: PORTED GAME, BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Lol. Bull shit.

So can the game be resold?? I'll happily buy someone's game from them... If not, I may create a new Steam account specifically for Portal 2 and when finished sell the game + account credentials...

Lol this game is made for the PC and ported onto the console, it works and looks great. even for a game based of the aging source engine, A PC engine.

It seems to me your expectations do not lie in the real world. Especially not in the single player first person shooter world, that would require an insane amount of content and a ridiculously, drearily long story.

A 40hr story driven FPS would in all likelihood make me hate gaming. Unless it was one unthinkably good plot.

And if they did such a thing like a 40hr FPS with Portal2/HL quality throughout it would have to be a guaranteed smash hit to be viable financially (and thus, green lighted in the first place).

Hilarious that the ones defending Portal 2's short length think the rest are unreasonable and expect 30-50 hour campaigns. 8-10 hours would be more reasonable...you know, like how long FPS games used to be.

But yeah, god help any of you Portal 2 length defenders if you bitch about another 5-hour FPS in the future...

Portal 2 was feeling too long towards the end.

Does "most" = "all"?

If not, it's gotten to the point where pre-ordering disadvantages early-adopters. I'd rather wait a few months to get the inevitable special edition that includes everything... at a cheaper-than-release price.

At least with DLC being available at launch, I can expect that package to come out sooner... right?

Its just all stupid crap for your co-op bots.. Nothing special. You can buy all of it for like $40 or something. Gestures, hats, skins and stuff.

Portal 2 was feeling too long towards the end.

Then it can't be THAT good can it? ;)

I'm not trying to be down on it. I think Portal 1 is the best thing Valve has released since Halflife 1. I want Portal 2; I'm just not paying $50 for it. Maybe I'll pay $30 but I probably won't grab it over anything else until it's $20 or below.

To everyone claiming this game was a console port: You're a fucking moron.

I remember when 40 hours for a single player PC game was considered short.

Anyway, I don't have a problem with ports as long as they are good ports. And the DLC is just a reason for me to wait for the inevitable "Game of the Year" edition that includes everything for half the price.

when was that exactly? PC games have always been notoriously short save RPGs back in the day.
