Plex pass going up

I switched to Emby recently and will never look back. I installed it temporarily on my media server and played around for 20 minutes... over the next half hour I was removing Plex from everything and rebuilding my library. Lifetime subscribed and downloaded all the apps to my devices.

Is it seamless for external streaming to personal devices? Can you have users with independant history? With Plex, all I had to do was set a port on the firewall rules. Have heard of Emby, just never tried it.

Yes, as long as its set up correctly you just open the app and you stream to external devices. I just did port forwarding to an internal ip from my external, but you could use dynamic dns or something to make it simple.

The app is just.... better imo. No fluff, no stupid stuff. Each user can have their own login. I did separate logins for each family member and each Roku device. It saves history and progress, and each person can download whatever they want to their devices.

Ive used Plex for years but 20 minutes with Emby was enough to have me switch.

Edit: Emby is also less expensive and doesnt feed you ads.

Yeah, I really like Emby. I didn't even try Plex, I just went straight to the lifetime Emby pass and it's been great.

I'm curious, I got my Plex Pass lifetime on sale years ago, and between that and constant ad-block haven't seen an ad in Plex yet (beyond their "Are you sure you don't want to login to every streaming service you have?" prompts). I've generally been happy with it, are there any killer features that would compel switching? It gets more use on PS5 than anything, do you have much experience with the PS5 app? I really appreciate that Plex works like most every other streaming service's app but better (yet to see a major one with the Shuffle Show/Season feature), I don't mind doing work to get things set up but I want the end-user experience to be as slick as possible. I'd definitely miss Plexamp for a lightweight mobile music player, I've got a big and well sorted music collection from a past life as a club DJ and it's one of the best-sounding and well-featured players out there, with lots of great auto-playlisting options even based on record labels or emotional vibe tags.
 
I paid a bit more than some of you guys ,but its well worth it.

But just got the email that as of April 29th, remote streaming for free users is going away. So I can't even stream my own library to myself outside the house.
Might work if I vpn to my own router, but still. More work for wife and kids.
Ugh.

May have to look at Emby.
 
This post reminded me that I still need to get around to ripping my entire physical media collection to put on my Plex server.

Looks like I snagged the lifetime pass in 2019 for $89.99.

Tidal stopped getting a discount for Plex members a while ago, so I've been meaning to drop that (and most of my other steaming services) then start utilizing my Plex server more.

Check Kodi also. I run it along side Plex as a backup, but have never actually used it.
 
I've also heard a lot about jellyfish as a completely free version. Is there a good resource (youtube, etc) comparing the pros/cons of each?

There probably is but for me the only real difference is Plexamp. I love Plexamp.
 
I really like plexamp too, but I don't know that I get full use out if it. What do you love about it Wade88 ?
 
I think it's really lame that they put previously free features behind the paywall at the same time they jacked up the price. Historically, Plex Pass subscribers got access to all the new features. Some of those features might migrate to the free version eventually. I liked that model, and I gave them some cash over the years via monthly subs to try out new features.

Plex is great software, but the new pricing is steeeeeep. I'm making the switch to Emby.

Did they really have that many subscribers though?

I wonder how much of this is them being pushed to increase revenue. Emby app reviews aren't great if you use mobile. It also costs a one time fee or monthly sub at least on Apple devices to use.
 
If you don't transcode free plex is fine.. I think i bought this years ago for 80ish.

It works well in android auto in the cars and trucks without any cellular service. I keep 200GB of flac on my phone and a 1.3TB of it on a tablet.
