Please help!!! 4400+ x2 problem?

Hey,

I just built a new system. The major specs are as follows:

AMD 4400+ x2 (stock speeds + cooler)
BFG 7800GTX OC (460/1300)
2x512 OCZ Platinum edition Rev2 (PC3200)
A8N-SLI Premium MB

Now here's he problem... I'm a gamer and play competitively.
The only game I'm playing at the moment and have installed
is CS:S. Before I start the game I set the affinity for all the
running processes to CPU 0. Once the game is started I mimize
and set the affinity for hl2.exe to cpu 1 so the game is only running
on the one core. Am I doing this correctly?

I can play the game for a while and I'm fine but eventually it freezes.
I cannot CTRL-ALT-DEL out of it. I have to turn the power off and restart.
For those of you that play CS:S it locks up the same as it does when
you exec a cfg, where the sound keeps repeating the same thing over
and over, except it does not unfreeze.

So my question is how do I isolate the problem? I've run prime for 24 hours
straight with 0 errors/warnings. I've run 3dmark05 3 times in a row. I've tried
memtest (windows version). I don't know what to do!?! Please help me isolate
this problem. Any help is appreciated.

PS I have flashed both BIOS's (1006 final + 1008 beta) and the same thing happens.

:(

you shouldn't need to set affinity.

and it sounds like a game issue. it's buggy :(
try playing a different game for a while and see if anything suspicious happens

If I don't set the affinity it crashes within 20 secs :(
I will try to install another game and see if it crashes.
Thx for the response

er.. strange. when you ran prime95, did you do so on both cores? (with two instances, one on each core)

how are temps?

just for refrance, how do you run 1 instance per core? Just set affinity? or something else? also what is the best test to run

you gotta have two instances open (tricky), just set the affinity in one to 1, and the other to 0
and i like in-place fft's, unless you KNOW the ram is stable, then small fft's :D

edit: found this in the readme:

To fully utilize a dual processor machine, you must run two copies of
prime95.exe. Run one copy of prime95 as described above. Run the second
copy of prime95.exe with the -A1 command line argument. Make sure the
second copy also has the "Start at Bootup" option set.

Yes eclipse... I ran both primes with affinity set to each core for roughly 23.5 hours.
The temps are great even with the stock cooler. 47 after 24 hours of prime.

I will try that and let you know the results. thx eclipse :D

Sooo many things it could be.

I would tend to think that it may be a PSU issue. Running Prime does not stresss GFX power consumption. The best torture test is the 2 instances of p95 with a 3dmark looping in the background. At stock speeds this should never crash unless your other components are unstable. If the draw on the 12v dips because of gfx usage, it could trigger a freeze (though mostly it comes in the form of a reset.

I don't think it's a power issue. I'm running a 550W antec truepower 2.0 which should be more than enough power. I forgot to mention the psu. Also, all the equipment is in a Lian-Li pc65B chassis as well which seems to keep everything quite cool.

On a happier note, I played a match tonight and also scrimmed 3 times. I was running source for a good 4 hours and it did not crash once. I tried something different which seems to be working. Instead of puttin all of my processes on the one core and source on the other, I only put explorer explicitly on core 0 and source on core 1. I left all teh other processes with the affinity checked for both cores. I also didn't minimize, and if I did, I shut source down totally between scrims. What could this indicate?

Anyways, tonight I will try running prime on both core's for teh next 12 hours and use in-place FFT's. I've only run prime with small FFT's. Thanks for the help so far guys. It's much appreciated. Sorry for another novel ;)

I decided to try to run 3dmark and prime at the same time as well in order to test the psu as
suggested (thank you). It ran through it like nothing. Still managed to get a decent score (it's usually around 8500) even with prime running on both cores. :p These processors are amazing!!! :D

EDIT: So I guess I've ruled out the processor, GPU and PSU. (correct?) I'm downloading the memtest iso right now because I don't trust the windows memtest I have. That will rule out the RAM. What other tests/procedures should I do before I can conclude that it must be a bug in the game? Are the tests I've performed sufficient? Thanks in advance for any input. <3

it's the optical drive.

haha, probably not actually.. but there have been cases where dvd drives cause instability. doesn't hurt to check it ;)

i have random crashes in source ever since i got the 7800 gtx. i think the engine is kind of unstable.

do you have the problem in any other games?

Source and G70 do not go hand in hand yet. I blame drivers, not the engine.

Yeah I agree. I still haven't had teh chance to test any other games because I had 2 makeup matches in 2 days. I'll istall another game tonight and give it a whirl. I'm thinking some pk. :)

This may be a bit obvious of a thing to have checked, but did you accidentally install the nForce IDE driver when you set up the system? That can often cause crashes/freezes.

No. That driver is not installed. I heard about it causing problems. I was actually on the asus support forums today. A lot of people seem to be attributing these system hangs to the latest lan drivers. I performed memtest this morning and the ram is perfect. So it's either the mobo, drivers, or the game. I'm working on eliminating those possiblilities. Any suggestions?

My cs:s runs great if i were you i would do a complete format (not quick) from a windows xp sp2 cd and clean install installing in this order.

os
mb drivers
video drivers

and then reinstall cs:s from scratch, you shouldn't have to set affinity for this game it works without any of that stuff.

I did that. In that exact order. It's a fresh install. The computer isn't even a week old. I'm willing to bet my life it's the mobo. Bye Bye Asus, hello DFI. This board has SO MANY ISSUES /pulls out hair

First off you should never have to set affinity to play CS:S on an X2. I have the same system minus the memory and have had zero issues playing CS:S for months. I am using the 1.05 Bios and the Marvell Nic. I doubt very much your board is the problem. You didnt mention what version of Nvidia drivers you are using. I'd being willing to bet this issue is not related to hardware. Sounds like OS, software, or drivers.

Running Prime95 in conjunction with another benchmark program can be counter productive.

By its very nature Prime is designed to use CPU cycles you are NOT using, thus it places no extra strain on your machine when you have something else running.

As for running two instances of Prime, the read me and help files have full instructions on how to set that up. Affinity can be set from within the program itself.

Luck

I think so too (drivers), someone else mentioned the 7800 has driver issues with CS:S, i wouldn't be surprised if that's the problem, it really doesn't seem like a hardware issue to me either since it's only happening in one certain game, and everything else works fine.

The 7800 doesn't have a driver issue with cs:s, i play all day and night with no problems score 175 in vst with 1280x960 4xaa 16xaf reflect all al opto's turned off.

The OS i'm running is xp pro x64. Using Forceware 77.77. The BIOS doesn't seem to matter because I've tried every one with the same results. Using the Marvel NIC as well. Latest chipset drivers. Everything seems to be updated. I have no idea what this problem is. I've tried almost EVERYTHING. I'm getting really frustrated and I don't have a clue what the problem could be. :(

The idea was to have prime running and 3dmark in order to increase power comsumption. Not increase cpu usage. I've run prime 24 hrs with affinity set within the program with zero errors.

Hmmm I wonder 64bit XP. Why on earth are you using that OS. Driver support is still limited and there is no real advantage yet unless you have a need for large memory support. If you don't have any 64Bit apps (FryCry is the only game) to take advantage you probably going to have more problems then its worth.. I would do another fresh install of good old XP pro with 77.72 drivers and I bet you your problem goes away.
