PlayStation 3 Hacked Again

I meant the reason why anyone would want to install that. It's just a waste of HDDs...

Though, most of the OtherOS activity was "Can I install Windows" "You can install Linux!" "Oh, ok, what about XP?" "No you can install a specially made distro of Yellow Dog Linux" "So no?"...:p

Maybe they do it so they can say, "Because we can!" or something like that. Isn't that why lots of people do pretty much pointless stuff?

I suppose. You should install Linux on that Compaq and say you did it for the youtube money! Start a new trend. :D

I have Linux luff on another computer already. :) And besides, everyone sticks Linux on old junky computers. That's totally unoriginal.

But you could do a youtube series on Linux myths and truths for the 999999.999% of the population who have never used it. Like if you put a Linux Live CD in the drive upsidedown eeverything on the screen is also upsidedown. Or that you cannot install Linux without a some kind of beard! :D

I like beards! Well groomed ones anyhow. They're all distinguished and Captain-of-a-ship looking when a guy can pull it off well. Or they're old, but still awesome Asian ninja warrior-ish which is equally amazing!

So this PS3 hack is pretty much a non-issue. It gives ppl the ability to mod their console and doesn't affect the ppl who don't want to mod their console.

Hacking a PS3 is child's play compared to a 360. Even if its been out for years its not nearly as easy.

People are far less willing to pay for a "flashed" drive than to simply use a USB key and do it themselves.

Pirate sites would disagree with your assumption that no one plays backups as well.

I guess that's fair. Hacking the 360 does involve opening the system, rather than just using a USB key. As far as playing backups I still believe the 360 is hacked in much greater numbers. I checked dark souls on a fairly popular site and saw the following totals as of right now: 360: 7,348 downloads PS3: 2,343 downloads. I was surprised to see that the 360 version is twice the size of the PS3 version -- I was under the assumption that those game backups were huge, but I guess the scene has managed to shrink them down.

Now I know why everyone I know who uses Linux (who isn't a woman) has a beard!

I don't think this is that big a deal. Theres been custom firmware for the PS3 for a while now.

Just means now there could be custom firmware for any version of the official firmware.

I'm guessing you have absolutely no idea why you'd want to use a more up to date version of the firmware. Comments like these are why I don't really bother checking this website when 98% of the posters post just show to their ignorance.

Yack.

No question the 360 is hacked in greater numbers , there are simply more gamers on the 360 than the PS3. I would bet at least 25-40 percent or even possibly more of the PS3 user base simply uses their console for Blu Ray's and streaming. I know about 10 people with a PS3 and only 3 of them actually game on it , the rest use it for media purposes. But the majority of people buy the 360 strictly with gaming in mind first and media second. Even if only 40 percent of 360 users ever even go online that leaves a huge portion to hack and do just about whatever they want to those systems without fear of bans.

But MS has actually managed to be pretty damn smart with the 360 , they do a fairly good job routing out hackers who exploit actively online. Sony it seems can't do anything but fuck it up its attempt at any security continuously. I know one friend who attempted to JTAG his 360 and in the end he felt it was just too much of a pain in the ass and ended up going with a sub to Gamefly heh.

Yay. Emulators incoming?

If going by the comments in another forum covering this and the "PS3 scene," most likely emulators and homebrew software developed for the PS3 are forthcoming.

As for PS3 emulation, HAHAHA! I don't think current processors can emulate at least half or even a fraction of the PS3 via software.

For PCSX2, I think it took two or three generations of processors and graphics cards to get PCSX2 to emulate close to or at 100% of the Playstation 2's hardware, and play PS2 games smoothly enough.

The same deal with ePSXe Playstation 1 emulator. I couldn't emulate it perfectly until I got a Athlon X2 5000+. I'd probably would have done it sooner if I went with Pentium IV processors.

But, that's the case with emulators. Maybe not until AMD's Excavator and Intel's Skylake are both released in 2015 at the earliest that they'd probably emulate a little more than half of the PS3's hardware. However, I just don't think any developer wants to try or attempt to emulate the PS3 via software. It'd take a genius programmer to do that. Xbox 360 I'd probably see emulated first before the PS3.

Yea, I didn't mean PS3 emulator. Sorry for not being specific! I have an old fat 20gb PS3 (with a 160gb hdd) and am excited at the prospect of having all the older consoles in that one system :D.

Well you're already ahead of the game. That PS3 can play PS1 and PS2 games. Now, you just need NES/SNES/Gameboy/etc emulators.

Pretty much exact opposite here. Most everyone has a PS3 for gaming. I had a few friends who were on the 360 but after their 50th RROD they decided it was time.

Some still have a 360 but most if not all are kinect based kids entertainment.

I second that. My 360 collects dust more and more. Most of my friends and coworkers have sold their 360s but still game on their PS3.

The people I know who do own 360s just buy the newest CoD and Madden for the year and that's about it.

Well in my case I own all 3 the Wii is in my closet, my 360 and PS3 is in the living room. My kids are the only ones who usually play the 360 much like my other buds, but I will play Halo 4 when it comes out but mainly the single player. The PS3 just has a better library for adults in my opinion.

I just hope Sony has a much better online system next go around because Live is definitely better than PSN without question.

After GeoHoT there really hasn't been any effort. If you upgrade to the latest firmware on your PS3 you can't downgrade it unless you use a tool to flash the chip. Newer games require the latest firmware. So it's either hacked PS3 or latest games.

ya know, I agree that the vast majority of console modding is for pirating, and its rather unfortunate. (I was guilty back in the day when I was poorer and wanted more PSP games than I could afford)

but I just got a great idea all of a sudden. A friend of mine gave me his old PS3, it stopped reading blu rays. I'mm mod it and download games for it to play off of external drives (Only games I already own)
Then I can hook that PS3 up to my other TV and not worry about swapping wires around

Only different I see in PS3 vs 360 online is cross game chat. I would hardly call it much better since it's free and does all the same thing but one little thing.

XBOX 360 and PS3 owner here. I've had 4 XBOX 360's, 3 of which RROD'd. My girlfriend bought me a 360+kinect last Christmas which has been used probably 10 times. I pay $10/mo for XBOX Live and probably haven't used it for anything other than watching an occassional netflix movie in the past 4 months. I probably wouldn't feel so bad about it if I'd purchased a 1 year XBOX live gold card for ~$40 but I could also just use Netflix on my PS3 or HTPC for free. :(

P.S. I've only played the PS3 a handful of times as well. Just graduated college in June and I've been working full time ever since. The only gaming I get in now is an occasional game of SC2, which I suck at.

Piracy is something that developers will just have to used to. Though I do buy games I really like, but the lack of demos makes piracy the only way to test before you buy. As Extra Credits reminds me demos of games are likely to be something you won't see anymore. To sink $60 into a game you aren't sure you'd like really sucks. Look at Max Payne 3, which was hyped to hell. I didn't even attempt to pirate it, let alone buy it. Just kinda knew it will suck.

Fact is people don't like having their machines locked down. Will a hacked PS3 be used for piracy? It's not different then a PC isn't it? Developers will just have to deal with the fact that some people will cheat the system. If your game was any good then piracy won't really be an issue. Even better, if you have great deals for you games like Steam does often. I got Skyrim for $27 with a deal and a coupon. As great of a game it is I'll wait patiently for deals.

Or just buy a $35 laser off Ebay and replace it. That's what I did to fix my PS3.

haha now i will have a use for my ps3

and it can sit next to my RGH xbox and be on PSN YAY

didn't they just got their behinds saved by Judges about few days ago from all those law suites???

it was like you just got off from selling drugs by proving it wasn't drugs and when they came to drop you off they saw whole meth lab in your front yard.

Different issue. First one was about the PSN, and account security, which they passed. This is about keys to the actual unit itself where no credit card info is stored. :p

Yack.
Well that's not true either.
One of the few reasons Sony updates the firmware is to push out the most recent AES keys for BluRay playback.
A lot of PS3 users look past this when firmware updates come out as well.
Cant play a lot of new BluRay movies on the older firmware.
Don't Yack on yourself!

Its a problem for anyone who doesn't like cheaters on PSN.
One of the great benefits of having a "level" playing field when playing online.

The security of PSN is the biggest deal to Sony.
Mess with PSN's secure gaming platform and software distribution service, get the horns.
This one effects PSN, no doubt about it.
