Hacked again? Didn't the company just celebrate a legal victory related to the "PSN-hack" class action suit? Thanks to dr.stevil for the link.

Sony has worked hard at keeping the PlayStation 3 from being hacked and unfortunately, the “LV0″ PS3 encryption keys have been leaked. This leaves the system vulnerable and allows it to be fully hacked. This hack is said to be irreversible and and irreversibly hacked for good.

So it's like the Xbox/360/Wii now and you can run custom firmware? Surprised it took them this long... BTW This doesn't effect credit card stuff, and will probably just mean more frequent firmware updates...

Thoough theres no confirmation still, but it sounds like they did it for money (to charge for custom firmware). So basically it's a bunch of asshats. :D

The thing with this:
Any firmware update released by Sony can now be decrypted, modified, and re-encrypted.

It's completely irreversible unless they want to kill off the older PS3 models up to... the 250 GB PS3 Slim and introduce a new Lv0 decryption key from what I can get online at various places.

from what i have read the guys releasing the hack are doing so because it was leaked to another group who was wanting to charge money for it. They said screw em and just released it to everyone.

Ya. Glad I went with Xbox years ago ;)

I'm assuming it will be like hacks/mods on other consoles in that you simply don't update the firmware on them once you hack it. The download 25-50GB games to play in offline mode :D

Granted I don't know much about the PS3, so I'm just speculating out of my backside ;)

Why would you wear a hat on your backside? If you sit down, you'd squish it and it'd be ruined unless it was some sort of floppy one that can get crumpled.

It's not a hat on the ass, it's a hat worn on the head made of ass (them)! Basically they are just a device to which other people stick their heads into!

So they say, but that will take time to do. So basically this will just mean lots more and more frequent firmware updates for legitimate customers (like, weekly), and a PITA for everyone.

They aren't even the original providers of it either, the original finders had their stuff broken into and had it stolen. Which being funny aside, this isn't really going to lead to lots of positive stuff for anyone. They stole it to make money from people. Though that aside this probably doesn't effect Credit card info or anything like that. These kind of people give other types of people a bad name and cause loads of problems pretty needlessly.

Hopefully, everyone shall enjoy their restrictive PITA DRM schemes and junk like Onlive and loss of things like modding and customization in the future. The reason OtherOS went was mainly because some asshats took things too far and tried to use it for free games. People should show more restraint and have more self control. :D

So instead of people who pay for custom firmware being screwed over, they screw over everyone? :D

I'm putting the wearing of someone else's behind on my head pretty high on my "Skribbel does not want!" list. It sounds dangerous.

Anyhow, so does this mean we can do more useful stuff with a PS3 now like maybe run a word processor or something?

Probably, but not really much point getting a PS3 to run a word processor and normal stuff, when you can get a more powerful PC that can do all of that and more, without as much hassle, for cheaper. :D

It's kind of why OtherOS was a non problem. Anyone who actually used it (which was like 3 people) would have known it wasn't anything wonderful and wasn't worth the 30gb of HD space to run a crappy slow Linux (I just Heatlesssun'ed :D.

they gotten the lv0 key for a while now.

the main thing is the lv0 key got leaked from the ps3 scene to the general public.

Even though I have no interest in using hacked consoles, I think that things like this keep the companies honest with things like pricing.

That and OtherOS was severely gimped. Hard. (Figuratively...)

The Hypervisor prevented OtherOS from direct access to the GPU. It's like running Windows XP Mode on Windows 7 without 3D capabilities. It was slow performing and slow overall.

The thinking on another forum is that a hacked custom firmware (CFW) could allow a modified hypervisor that'd bring back OtherOS and allow it to get access to the GPU. It's a thought for now, but nothing concrete as usual.

You mean by increasing them? If they "have" to spend more on security and DRM? Or if they have to reduce the cost of things due to negative public views, that will just make companies less likely to invest in a future console and mean less stuff for everyone and smaller game budgets. Instead theyll go for facebook/phone games. It wont be console ports, it will be more of those damned phone ports. This kind of stuff never means positives for anyone. :(

Just like with the previous Lv1 hack with the root key, the firmware introduced by Sony in 3.60 and higher only uses a workaround to the hack. Works? Yes, but it's a stop-gap solution.

Sony would have to release new PS3 hardware with new keys but the general fear is that it'll render older PS3 games unplayable. Or, with the Lv0 hack, older PS3 consoles up to the 250 GB Slim unable to play any PS3 game or get any new updates.

Thanks to these guys, every legitimate PS3 console owner is going to have to live with frequent firmware updates from now on. I wouldn't be surprised they'll just be workarounds for this instead of a permanent solution.

I don't think this is that big a deal. Theres been custom firmware for the PS3 for a while now.

Just means now there could be custom firmware for any version of the official firmware.

But even then, why would you pay money for a slower PC than you could get for the same money? You could probably get a more capable PC and a Blu ray player for less money than a PS3. It's still going to be running on old hardware, even with full acess I don't think it would be wonderful!

Then, thats not anyone really does with these kind of things. The focus is always on free games and "emulators". Not really on that kind of stuff. OtherOS was around a long time, and never really amounted to anything. :D

I disagree. Look at the original Xbox hacks. One of the biggest things to come from the was XBMC. I believe it was because of the XBMC that the new Xbox 360 had as much media functionality as it did. :)

Yeah, you could get a better computer for a little more than a $250 PS3 and it'd run Linux better. Only one of my friends with the older fat PS3 tried OtherOS and said he'd rather run it on his Pentium IV (at that time) than that "slow ass" computer.

btw the article is just lies. The scene know who was the guy that leaked the keys and is upset that he did that. team rebug had the key already for months and was coding a 4.21 cfw with it with a lot of features that was going to be for free. So leaking the key didn't help the scene much.

Yea its a clusterfuck. Sony could take a page from MS on how to create a "hack" resistant console. Its far harder to hack the 360 than the PS3..

HOWEVER one glaring issue with even being able to hack the PS3 is that the games are 25GB on up. That means even if you could hack your PS3 with the intention on playing pirated games your ISP will notice long before anyone else would. Most people are lucky to have a 300GB cap per month. If you downloaded even 5 or 6 games a month you could blow through that cap inside a few days not even other usage.

So even if the PS3 is now completely open to hacks it won't hurt Sony's bottom line thanks to ISP's being lousy with their data caps these days.

Yeah i think it had alot to do with it. There was an interview with bill gates where they said they took alot of things that a modded xbox did and put into the 360. I believe the media functionality was one of them.

I'll have to check out that interview. The modded machines turn a lot of consoles into what people want from the console. So, it makes a lot of sense to design a console based on the mods - that's what the consumer wants.

But that was how long ago? On modern consoles you have media streaming, an internet explorer, youtube and Blu Ray/DVD/CD/SA-CD playback, already. So lots of this functionality that the non game/emulator mods added is already built in (and even vanilla consoles accept applications, like the photo/movie editor on the PS3), so there's less stuff to do, and less of a need to do it!

the problem is xbmc is still a lot better than all those media streaming stuff that current consoles offer. so if a console is modded and someone port xbmc to it, it would be way better

this is not PSN its ps/3 hw stuff. headline made it sound as tho PSN was attacked again.

I wonder if they will figure how to add PS2 emulation back into the system :)

Just like the PSP though, they could have the firmware app which would just download a game to the HDD and play it from there, then it would be as simple as renting a game from the video store instead of blowing your ISP cap.

Word processing would be awesome on the PS3 because, if it worked well and still did all the other junk it does now, it could replace a desktop PC for some people. Then you just need printer drivers and spreadsheets and slide presentations and you have like productivity which is a much better use of a PS3 than playing games.

Is that sarcasm? I don't know anyone who has a PS3 that plays backups, but I know plenty of people that have 360s that do. The 360 has been blown wide open for years (with JTAG), and recently even current ones work afaik with RGH. Plenty of people play online with flashed drives as well. Checkout craigslist for drive flashing ads, etc.

People use consoles still? I thought the PS3 was past its useful life?

Don't forget the last PS3 hack was also supposed to be irreversible based on what the news sites were saying.

Yet the first new version of a custom firmware just came out recently, when the most recent one before that was released over a year ago and was many version behind the official firmware.

Well that just wasn't true...
The previous hack by GeoHot made them ditch their first level of security, the metldr, for lv0 only.
Revoking any lv0 keys breaks the chain of trust at the bootldr.
A 48bit key stored in the cell and burned in at the factory e-fuses that cannot be updated or changed.
This one is not fixable unless they want to orphan ALOT existing consoles.

The only thing they can do now is start detecting modified consoles then ban them
and or the PSN account associated with them.

Hack a 360 and MS gives you a t-shirt.
Hack a PS3 and Sony sues you into financial ruin, win or loose.

Hacking a PS3 is child's play compared to a 360. Even if its been out for years its not nearly as easy.

People are far less willing to pay for a "flashed" drive than to simply use a USB key and do it themselves.

Pirate sites would disagree with your assumption that no one plays backups as well.

Just to confuse individuals such as yourself.

I meant the reason why anyone would want to install that. It's just a waste of HDDs...

Though, most of the OtherOS activity was "Can I install Windows" "You can install Linux!" "Oh, ok, what about XP?" "No you can install a specially made distro of Yellow Dog Linux" "So no?"...:p
