Perfect Dark

The ugly character designs and the developer that attacked gamers over race swaps tells me this was going to be another piece of shit for modern audiences that don't exist. It's probably good the game got cancelled.

Microsoft stock is up up up. Sometimes it pays to make good decisions regarding dead weight. MS hasn't made a good game in a decade and the only good games they have published are from devs that they don't own from foreign developers that stuck to their creative vision and did their best to ignore Microsoft's policy. Get rid of the management positions that were doing a poor job and axe the activists. I'm glad they had the smarts to turn it around before they turned into UBI.

Well all those fragile male gamers who monitor the chin design of female video game characters for excessive masculinity can now breathe a big sigh of relief. It's alright guys, you're safe!

Honestly, if it took them 7 years and they didn't produce a game then there was a problem. If the publisher would rather cancel the game after all of these years of development instead of releasing it, then you know it was bad, regardless of the main character's chin. It comes down to competency, turns out taking payouts from the government to poison their own "well" wasn't a good decision after all.

I was excited for it but had minimal hopes since it was so far off and little detail locked in. I don't care if things are changed but provide a valid reason or move on it. If it was never clarified prior well that makes it easier. To do something just because when the story / characters were build around another seems unnecessary. I took the images provided as more early options or concepts vs this is how it is but oh well. Have to dig out my N64 and play the original instead :D

Definitely the right choice cancelling this game. It was on the wrong track.

One of the things people liked about the original game was it had a hot girl patragonist kicking ass. They couldn't even get that right. They purposely got it wrong. Pandering to small outspoken audience that does not even play games.

There is nothing special about the IP other than nostalgia. There is no point using the IP unless you lean into that.
The original game came out 25 years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if the vast majority of people working on the new game didn't even play the original.

They didn't use a good face model, her face didn't translate well to videogames. Good they killed it, it probably wouldn't have sold much anyways.

Microsoft is probably going to benefit more from all the people talking about the layoffs and game cancellation then they would from actually finishing and releasing the game.

I'm really just hoping a majority of the layoffs consisted of those of the blue haired persuasion.

From how I understand it, it was mostly sales people who got laid off and middle management. I don't think it was a purge of woke people. It was more of a shift in business strategy, they also hired on 7000 h-1b visa workers. So it's likely an optimization in structure to afford the new AI engineers.

Games are taking way too fucking long to develop and I'm convinced AAA has a fatal boner for trying to drink the ocean and deliver grandiose blockbusters rather than just making something fun. They were honestly doomed from the instant someone had the audacity to label this company as AAAA because it just set the stage to get bogged down in bullshit.

Seems only indies these days remember that something can be fun without being a violently overwritten, overengineered display of simulation one-upsmanship so they can brag that there's 90000 ways to do the same thing.

Like Rare pulled the original out of their ass like 3 years after GoldenEye. While developing like 5 other games.

Yes, expectations have since shifted. But if you can't find fun in 7 years of development then you've lost the plot.

They're still trying too hard to make movies instead of games. They certainly look pretty, but have been made increasingly bland at the same time. The vertical slice they showed in the reveal trailer for this looked really good, and if they were able to successfully translate it into the actual game it would have been fun.

I think some of that is also those with the purse strings demand AAA movie-esque visuals as that will sell. But ultimately what we need and want is rock solid gameplay, an experience that delivers on the intent. Some games that certainly translates to high end graphics. Others its all about movement, shooting, sound, environment etc and some its a mix of all three.

As socK said Goldeneye was such a smash because it offered an amazing experience, unique gameplay and REPLAYABILITY with achievements, unlocks and multiplayer that was severely lacking elsewhere at the time. It was just a blast to play through. It certainly did not look amazing even for the standards of the time. But they nailed the guns, movement and experience. Some maps you could see them pushing the limits while others they stuck to what they could and it comes across well. Even the original Perfect Dark did the same. Though the story was a lot more in depth the game was still a lot of fun, if not quite as magical as Goldeneye.
