PC Gaming Misconceptions?

i never said anything about building rigs. have you ever seen the worklogs on [H]. now that is a hobby! no doubt!

video games? thats not a hobby. watching movies? thats not a hobby? eating a pretzel? naw son.. not a hobby.

I'm simply looking at it from the standpoint of the characteristics that gaming shares with hobbies in general. Gaming takes time, an investment in resources, is something that a person likes to do and skills and knowledge are obtained in the activity. There's even potential marketability in those skills and knowledge and investment of resources. I'm not saying that for most people it would be considered a true hobby, gaming is more of an entertainment than a hobby for most but for those that take it seriously gaming shares the major characteristics of any hobby.

I was addressing the keyboard argument regarding sofa use. As far as controller, you realize the 360 wireless hooks up just like a 360 console right?

It doesn't have to be awkward, there's some nice trays out there, any number of ways to set this up, but sure, it's not a casual as just using a controller on a couch. But to knock the PC for casual gaming with a controller because you'd get ripped by people with keyboards and mice isn't so much a knock on the PC as much as it's a statement of inferior console controllers for competitive gaming.

Are we talking about the majority (like 95%) of the gaming market place or competitive gaming?

You do realize the PC has controllers also right? I use a wired xbox 360 controller on my PC for specific games, just like I use a steering wheel/pedal setup for specific games and my kb/mouse for other games.

Case in point you have this for this and that for that... PC gaming is not seamless and simple... and that is that. It is a hassel, and has nothing to do with cost or graphics.

Most on this forum have emersed them selves into PC gaming where things do not seem like a hassel at all... but in reality it is the the majority of gamers.

For instants on my second RMA for my 670. My first response from the RMA group was something this effect:

Try installing the drivers without HD audio and 3d vision.
Run memtest on each stick of memory.
Try a different card in the machine.
Try the card in a different machine
etc etc etc...

Me... I instantly wrote a response that I was ahead of them and already tried that.

Joe sixpacks reponse to that... WHAT DA FUCK?

It comes down to the fact that most on here can't step out of their nerd thinking and realize that people don't know how, nor want to invest the time and hassel into doing things like buying this PC and putting a video card in it.

i think the biggest point being made here is were not talking about the 5%. were talk about the group as a whole. console gaming is simple

95% + of the time, you can just toss in a new video card without hassle. It was only a problem for you due to bad luck. Usually you put in GPU, install drivers, forget about it and game.

i think you are missing the point entirely. he is saying yes generally you and i probably arent going to have a problem.

try and explain to somebody who has no knowledge of computers the power requirements to a video card and then explain to him what he has to do properly install the drivers and remove the old ones. sometimes the simplest things for us are the most difficult.


some people can put a video card into a computer

some people can write a book

some people would rather just read a book

some people would just rather play a console

Definitely. I have a wireless 360 controller for Windows with the Plug & Play kit. Works great & all games (that have support for game controllers) recognize it w/o any issues.

That's my personal choice, I could use a controller on all the games I play if I wanted. (L4d, Skyrim, Portal 2) Just like some people have multiple "peripherals" for their Wii. Granted some games require the use of a "peripheral" not included with the console such as games that require classic controllers and the like. (Even then I think you could use the Wiimote sideways?)

Also if you want to talk about casual gamers; casual gamers don't own a console or a "gaming" PC. They play web based games and/or mobile games on their phones.

The fact is, you can use a PC to casually game if you wanted. You just can't use the others to do what a PC can do; therefore a PC can and will always be able to "do more" with your money.

Why would I want to explain something like that to someone with zero interest in learning? I'd tell them to fuck off and quit being the lowest common denominator.
