so i posted earlier about a heatsink for a socket-T P4 630

i got one that was rated at 21 decibals, but it still sounds like a vacuum... basically no change from the stock heatsink.

I don't really care about temp. as I don't plan on overclocking, so long that my computer doesnt burn up.

With that in mind, whats the best budget passive heatsink for a socket 775?

I don't think there's such thing. What do you have now, perhaps all you need is a proven quieter heatsink (don't go by their ratings :rolleyes: ...).

google "LGA775 passive heatsink" I got quite a few hits.

hmm you got me interested as I water cool to acheive low noise, looking around I saw this, its expensive and I would change the fan to a panaflow low speed and put a zalman fanmate speed controller on it to further reduce noise.

what strikes me is these are used by the heavy overclockers, of couse they use the louder fans but this thing MUST dissipate heat well and it is mentioned that it can be used as a passive.

Looking at your previous post, it looks like the problem could be with the case fans rather than the heatsink. If you did buy the Ninja as was reccomended to you in that thread, I highly doubt it would sound like a vacuum cleaner.
 
i wanted to buy the ninja, but my local fry's didnt have it and i'm going back to college friday which means i wont get it before i leave...

the silent 775 was the best option they had. no worries, i'll just return it and find something better elsewhere.

also, one of my friends suggested a thermaltake t-120... but i've only found those for socket 478. i'd rather not use an adapter for a passive heatsink, unless its recommended/suggested
 
forget passive just get a silent fans with a large heatsink like scythe ninja is good choice. you run a silent fan at like 7volt you can barly hear it if you are holding it in your hand.

I have the antec 120mm now in the back of my case but it's really loud on the highest setting. The difference between the highest setting and the mid setting sounds very loud, but decreases my mb and cpu by about 4C!

Hopefully this (expensive) but very cool fan will help me get those temps exhausting air almost as good as a panaflow but with more than 2x the noise reduction of a panaflow.

chythe ninja might be a good buy and ya can allways add a 120mm fan to it..... yes i know its huge.
 
fan controller's the easy way... or, i think you can lower from 12v to 7v just by rearranging the wires.
 
yes you can mix wires to get 7v but i would recommend a fan controler. get a cheap 3.5 or 5.25 bay fan controler you can find for 10-15$ control 3-4 fans. i usally hook all my intakes fans to one knob and all exaust to one knob and things like cpu fan to another if i can not control it via OS.

a true 21db fan is very quite you put it in a case you should not notice it. plus HSs like the ninja have fins twice as far apart as other HS for less air turblance.
 
Grab a ninja plus, and if it passive isn't enough, undervolt the fan to 5v and it should be more than enough. You won't be able to hear it.
 
alrighty. silent 775 is goin back tomorrow, and i'll pick up a ninja plus and a pci fan controller... does that sound about right?

how much juice does the ninja need? i only have a 380 watt psu and im looking to get an x850xt

Juice? It's just a heatsink, it doesn't require power (although the fan does if you'd like to run it). the 'plus' part just means that it already comes with a 120mm fan, whereas you used to have to buy one in addition to the heatsink.
