P-III continuous full load harmful?

Hi everybody

I've made a surveillance pc with a dvr function,
based on an old HP vectra P-III 933MHz.
The recording software is always on ,buffering. When it detects motion on 1 of the 2
cameras it wil record to the harddrive.
Now does this process take up 99% of the resources with 110Mb pagefile usage.
So this little processor is on 100% 24/7.

I upgraded the heatsink to this

Does running 100% all of the time harm the processor?
I know that a P-III will shutdown when the temperature reaches a certain setpoint.
This one has been on for 2 weeks without any lockups or crashes.
so I think I'm in the clear :rolleyes:

Unfortunatly speedfan does not work with a P-III, So I have no
clue what the temp of the processor is
Sombody knows some good monitoring software that can handle a P-III ?

Running a processor at 100% all the time will only cause problems if it overheats. That upgraded heatsink you have will be more than enough ensure that doesn't happen.
 
Intel's lifetime for a "modern" processor is 10 years, at full bore, 24/7. That's their "standard" rule of thumb, that such a processor should be able to run at it's rated speed as long as it has adequate cooling, and I think you've got that covered. Shouldn't be any issues.

If the box is that important, might consider putting a UPS on it so it does maintain that uptime in spite of some power brownouts or short term blackouts, can't hurt.

As for monitoring software, the old classic Motherboard Monitor 5 is still floating around out there and should fill that need precisely. Still my favorite monitoring application of all, and it works great on this 6 year old Dell Precision 530MT dual Xeon 2 GHz box I own now. :)
 
Put a casefan in to help increase airflow - and blow that hot cpu air out of the case.


Thats a good suggestion, all those old style aluminum electrolytic caps is what I would be worrying about failing in 24x7x365 use. You got the cpu covered. I am thinking this thing is in a closet somewhere so heafty medium or high speed fans every place you can and taking tin snips to remove the stamped in grill and replace with a wire fingerguard would be iceing on the cake.

To really make it bulletproof I am not so sure about the power supply. If this was something I was going to sell to a customer or I would want to never have to worry about for the next 5 years, I would consider slapping in a new modern power supply. However I cannot see any details of the one installed and it looks strange as far as the mounting goes but it might be new for all I know. /shrug just throwing another idea out.

I reused the old processor fan as a casefan (you can see the place for it in the picture)
I also removed the stamped grill
I never use fingerguards (every man who touches my fan deserves to loose his finger :p)
The computer is placed on top of a bookshelf, out of the way
but not cramped in a closet
It does feel cooler now,

The only thing I can't replace is that darn PSU
it is a special HP part with an extra fan monitoring connection
It's not even standard atx format
I have tried another psu, but without that connector in place on the mobo, she won't even boot, complaining about a "critical" fan missing :D
 
I would not worry about the processor dying anytime soon due to the 24/7 use of it. I've been running a PIII 800 like that for around two years now and I don't worry about it. I've run many other computers longer than that going 24/7 without a problem. People around here do that all the time with their systems. I've basically done this with every system I've owned since my P100.

The list of processors I have done this with is Pentiums, PII's, PIII's K6-2's, K7's and C2D's. In a few days I should be doing the same thing to an X2 and possibly another old T-Bird.

 
why is it at 100% all the time. Running anything at 100% all the time is never good
 
I have a Athlon 2500+ overclocked to 2.2ghz (from1.83) and it been running at 100% (Folding) for 3+ years.
 
I've run a dual P3-667 Mhz, at 100% load (distributed.net/SETI/etc) for 6 years on stock HSFs. Didn't even cough. I just upgraded the box last month.

It feels odd having an uptime of 700+ days on Win2k. :)

Look up the board number and I bet there's some instructions to shorting/jumping two of the pins. Same thing happened to me. That's how I got around it. Now have a standard psu with an old 1ghz p3 HP board.

All the motherboard is looking for is an RPM signal. Had the same problem in my dell optiplex (sig). My dell had a proprietary connector for the fan, but its pinout was very obvious. It was Red, Black, and White. I guessed correctly that White was the RPM wire. I snipped the connector and spliced the yellow wire to the white wire on one of the case fans I replaced. It worked perfectly.

I haven't seen the case up close, but does it use one of those M-ATX specific PSU's?

Perhaps you could the case to fit a standard PSU (ATX or M-ATX) if you needed to.
 
wow running at continuous full load, i thought the thing would blow up by now if its constantly running at full load. I think as long as you have adequate air flow going through your case and with that upgraded heatsink/fan it should be able to run more effeciently without it randomly tunring off at threshold.
 
Everyone who Folds (or looks for ET) can tell you this is fine.

MBM5 should work fine.

Off Topic: Would you care to tell us some more about your surveillance pc? What kind of parts and software did you use? I'm asking because we have had some vandalism at our house and I'd like to do something like you if it's not too difficult.

The psu is neither an ATX or mATX format
I don't have a good picture of it but with some casemodding I should be able
to fit a standard or micro PSU in there

Good tip to just feed a fansignal to that connector, must try that out soon
If I take out the PSU and start it up, the fan runs a whole lot faster then when it's connected to the mobo
So it looks like the mobo adjusts the PSU fanspeed according to the boardtemp

That is the exact same reason I started this little project
I am nursing a grapevine for 3 years now, and this year was the first time there was
1smale bunch of grapes on it. the very first bunch it ever made.

I'm sure you can find something similar closer to home
The image isn't fantastic, but at that price who's complaining

it works with an older version of Pico2000 (not realy sure if the version they include is 100% legit)
A manual for the software is easily found if you google a bit
I must say it was fairly easy to set up
The box is placed out of the way on a bookshelf
It's running headless, only connected to the mains and my homenetwork
I got XP pro running on it (made it into a Lite version) so I can remote desktop to it
Gave it a fixed IP address, just outside the DHCP range of the router
So it can not connect to the internet, but is perfectly reachable locally

Little update
jumpering pin 1 & 2 of the "fanconnector" does solve that problem
Now I can use a standard ATX or mATX PSU

I had a p3 800 coppermine with this gateway pc, it had an all aluminum, passive heatsink, and their was only one fan in the whole case, and that was the psu, and that was mostly sealed up, and that fan was wired to only run on 5v, so it ran at very low rpm. The point is, the processor heatsink was totally passive, with no case airflow, and it still runs today, (haven't put 100% load on it in two years however)
