Overclocked computer underperforming

Hey, I just recently bought a new computer, got an 8800 GTS, overclocked it to Core: 613, Memory 992, so I guess it's DD, so, 1200 / 2000?

Overclocked my e6420 from 2.14ghz to 3.2...
I've got 2 gigs of OCZ Platinum ram, and a p5k deluxe motherboard... Everything seems like it should run at a pretty high level...

Maybe it's just me, but I seem to be having problems running CoH at above average settings...
Could I have overclocked improperly? Is Company of Heroes just too advanced?
Any ideas?
 
You have the fastest consumer vid card in the world and OCed a bit too.

You have (overclocked) one of the fastest cpus in the world compared to stock specs.

You have a good MB, plenty of ram and the ram timings are not critical unless you messed up completely which I doubt.


It all depends on screen resoultion (how many pixels you are tyring to shove around in a hurry) and you didnt mention what kind of monitor and what resoltuion it runs the game at.
 
And what's your definition of "above average settings" in CoH?
 
A few settings aren't at ultra, some are at medium, no anti aliasing, 1024*768 resolution
Now, I understand this game requires a hell of a load... BUT!
My friend has a Pentium D processor, same vid card, same ram, but can run the game at max settings.
what's up with this!?!?!?
He didn't even overclock his video card!
I must be doing something wrong, it's even running Quake 4 choppy now... I ran orthos or whatever for about 20 minutes, and it was stable.
My 3d benchmark tests are far below average as well =(
 
What operating system did you go with and do you have the most recent graphic card drivers properly installed? Are there any devices in Device Manager that don't have the drivers installed? Are there any apps running in the background eating up CPU cycles that you don't know about?

If you're running Vista and your friend has XP then you should expect a performance hit when gaming. Some games are worse than others.

Was this a fresh install of the operating system?

Give us some more details about your hardware like motherboard and memory timings, etc. and the full details of some 3D benchmark runs. I like 3DMark2005. Don't overclock your video card until you get a good baseline.

Your GPU or CPU could be overheating so post some temperatures while gaming of your core temperatures.

There's likely something pretty minor holding you back but it might take a lot of work to track down the problem.
 
Also, have you simply tried backing everything down to stock and getting a baseline performance reading from there?

See how the game runs on your PC without the overclock, that will help pinpoint the problem.
 
lawl maybe you were running CoH DX9 before your overclock, then you rebooted and ran the DX10 verson. hehehe

Are there any apps running in the background eating up CPU cycles that you don't know about?: I can't really answer this question, if I don't know there's any apps in the background eating up my cpu, then I don't know... :p

my video card was idling at around 60, and would peak at around 70 during stress tests...
My cpu stayed around 30 degrees, I have a gigantic heatsink and fan... uhh... thermalright 120? I believe?
 
Download CPUZ and make sure that your pci express bus is running at a full x16. When I started overclocking my cpu, my motherboard throttled the pci-express bus down to x1, which severely reduced performance. I had to increase the freqency of the pci bus from 100 to 105 for it to stop its silly-business.

OK, how many programs do you have running at startup? or at this moment? Are there programs that you can turn off?

If you have no idea what programs that does not need to run in the background, just post a screenshot of your task manager fully maximized or extended far enough to see the entire list of programs.

Also wondering why my GPU overclock wont stick on reboots.
I used coolbits 2 (im assuming all it did was alter the registry to allow me to overclock in the nvidia control pannel, otherwise I did something wrong), and when I change the profiles to set to that overclock at reboot, it wont work, and I just get errors...

Use RivaTuner instead. That said, don't bother OCing until it's running 'right' anyway. You're just introducing more potential issues.

In fact, try dropping your OC down, back to stock speeds (make sure your RAM is running at proper speeds too, don't just leave it linked and synced and turn down the FSB, obviously) and see if things improve.

Try the 160.03 or 160.04 drivers. Use DriverCleaner before installing them. They're available at www.guru3d.com or www.laptopvideo2go.com

You're Orthos stable but having all these problems... are motherboard/chipset drivers installed? (don't know if you need them as I have a 680i board, and in my case they actually seem to do more harm than good.)

Uninstall nTune if you installed it. It just screws things up.

What kind of PSU do you have?
 
I see that you're running Norton Anti-Virus. Uninstall it. Norton AV is crap.

Go with a much less demanding Anti-virus. If you want a free anti-virus, AVG Free Edition is a pretty decent anti-virus. If you want one of the best AV out there, then get Nod32 for $30 I believe. Either one is better in terms of resource requirements and usage as well as virus detection than Norton AV.
 
Got 9884 for my benchmark ranking for 3dmark 06...
Not sure if that's good or not, seems like it was bottom feeding for computers similar to mine.
When it was doing the processing test, I was getting 0-1 fps

It's not terrible. Uninstall Norton as Danny said and try out the things I outlined, and see if it improves.

The highest most will ever see on those CPU tests is 2 fps.
 
Norton can make booting up rather sluggish and personally I wouldn't use it or recommend it anymore but when you finally arrive at the Desktop it isn't that bad. It's a bit of a memory pig but it doesn't hog the CPU so there's no reason to uninstall it. Your CPU Usage is sitting at 0% so there is nothing major running in the background killing your performance.

When you post a screen shot of Task Manager you can narrow it down a little bit. We really don't need to see a foot of white space. :D

Your results don't look that bad. Maybe your expectations are too high.

How does your friend score with 3DMark06? Some of the comparisons available from the FutureMark site are not really fair comparisons. There's typically a lot of cheating going on. Compare your benchmark numbers to numbers from a reputable hardware review site and you'll probably see that you're not doing that bad.

I made three runs with 3DMark06 and discarded the high and low scores to get the numbers listed here for 3Dark06. I used the default settings for both 3DMark06 and for the XFX 8800 GTS in the NVIDIA control panel. The results of the 3DMark06 test are as follows, the numbers in parenthesis are the results for the 8800 GTX:

* 3D Marks: 8554 (10355)
* SM 2.0: 3742 (4796)
* HDR/SM3.0: 3760 (4870)
* CPU: 2285 (2288)

You're already 1000 points higher than this X6800 so what are you complaining about?
