What happens if person tries open programs that are on External USB 2 HD
I assume if you can do this probably creat Temp file / folder somewhere. If did creat temp on New hd person would have to assume these temp would be completly deleted(hope)

Here is deal. I use Win XP Pro I started having issues with corrupt files OR something do with OS. One of Biggest issues - I could no longer adjust resolution on Dell 24” Monitor and I tried everything included hours / hours talk with Tech people. Dell – IBM - NVIDIA
I tried Clone this c:/ drive 500GB Sata to another Sata 500GB drive BUT it will not boot up, all programs and files are there on new cloned drive.

I bought New 500GB Sata drive and did system recovery with two disk that came with IBM 6223 Machine .
No problem took 2+ hours but ended up Perfect set up Win Xp Pro and I have installed couple programs and very satisfied.

Now question how get Programs and files from Original hd to New hd ? I have researched and after much looking into other people problems doing this I don't have much faith in any programs they have for doing this. Suggestions appreciated

Original hd has OS and boots up OK
What will happen if I hook up Original HD by way of ecternal USB 2 then try opening Program(s) that are on External drive? I would like avoid if possible mess up Newly installed hd that is working very well. I would like to get programs from Original HD to New HD and save time it takes install 15 + programs and settings

Thanks
Any and All suggestions sincerely appreciated

Depending on the program, it may or may not work. Some will work fine as long as all of their files are in that directory, others put lots of files in the system directories and such, and therefore won't work at all. Some may be in between, mostly working but having some problems.

If you had problems with files on the original drive, I'd just reinstall the programs on the new drive. Just copy over your data files, but do fresh installs of the programs themselves.

Not gonna happen.

For any kind of satisfactory results, you'll need to reinstall all the programs on the new disk.

Don't forget that some programs require registry settings that were created at the time of install.

Thanks very much for replies

Mostly confirms my FEARS / concerns if person has HD which been used as main drive c:/ with OS and programs - files on it and removed this drive and install new hd and OS

Then tries take 1st drive which has been removed and hooks it up External with U S B 2 connection and successfully opens few of programs on this External drive it will OR could install some corrupt files on operating computer c:/ drive

Not smart thing to do = dumb thing do or try even for dumb person

As we all know they sell programs with claims to do this Move programs from old drive to new computer which already has OS on it. Lot things are sold that are VERY IFFY

Thanks again
I have decided install programs as I need or want use them instead of mass installation

Here one I was and maybe still considering.
This is what they claim or say on their site for this program PCmover.
the only migration utility that moves programs, files, and settings from your old PC to your new PC. Simply install PCmover on both your old and new computers and go.

And this is more less what customer service and Tech people told me.
From what it says above (Simply install PCmover on both your old and new computers and go) I assume must have OS on New computer before person could install any program RIGHT If so in my case this seems perfect program which to use.
BUT as I said before I am not comfortable with Programs settings being moved / installed on computer that is running very smooth. The old settings is what's IFFY with me.
