So i work for the gs (shhh i know... we all hate them) and a customer dropped of one of those older Dell XPS computers to be recycled. He striped everything except the mobo and the processor... well the mobo is some dell proprietary thing and it had a burst cap on it so it was crap. When i pulled the processor out (i was curious to what he got in it cause those dells were pretty $$$ when they were new)... its a p4 3.2ghz SL6WG w/ hyper-threading

my question is... how decent of a processor is this? there is a Bio-star mobo on newegg for about $60 that has pci-e and ddr2.... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138079

am i wasting my time throwing together a budget box with this processor or is it a solid one i can get some decent use out of...

my other computers ive got right now are my i7, core2duo 4300 and an A64 3500+. My guess is it will be better than the a64?
 
For the money, it's not worth it unless you already have parts laying around to get it up and going. The cpu will be a bottleneck for newer graphics card and games. i7 > C2D > A65 > P4.
 
It's probably no better than your A64, 'specially if you OC'd that 3500+... The P4 wasn't a very efficient processor despite how high it clocked (relatively speaking, at the time). If you've already got a spare HD/RAM/PSU then I guess it's no big deal to get a mobo for it and put it to use (if you really need a fourth system or you want an extra Folding box), otherwise I'd chuck it, or make a keychain out of it. :p

I'd ebay it. You can at least get a couple bucks for it.
 
Make sure you package it well. The last thing you need is a hassle with a buyer because of bent pins.

It could possibly be an LGA775 processor, which would considerably help shipping hassles. But if it's the old Socket 478 kind, yes, package it well.

SL6WG is a 130nm Northwood I believe. I don't think they had northwoods in LGA775.

Sell all the 478 parts and upgrade to a cheap E1500/775 mobo and memory. The E1500 is one hell of an overclocker

I had a E1200 (1.6Ghz) that I clocked to 3.4Ghz using the stock cooler. I never got that high of a percentage OC with any other CPU.

My E1500 went right to 11 X 333 10 minutes after install with just a voltage bump. The low cache sucks but she'll clock very high and be a HUGE improvement over the P4's
 
Wow, Northwood. Congrats, you have one of the best Pentium 4 processors ever made (the only thing better was Cedar Mill). Too bad that's not much of a compliment :)
 
Overclock it, and fold! If not, ebay it...no sense in keychaining it. I reserve that for Barton age AMDs and any Celeron ever made.
 
A lot of modern Celerons would probably put that P4 to shame at Folding... :p
