Old intel dual processor setup...

you really need to list the specs of what you have... have you tried taking out one of the processors?.... have you looked in the bios to see if there is a way to disable one of the processors?
 
If it's older, you would definately not want to disable one of them. Really though, taking one out is about the only way your going to be able to disable one.
 
You do NOT take one out and attempt to run the computer. Jeez, where do people come up with these things?

You have to buy a dummy CPU (I forget the technical term for it at the moment) and run it with a dummy CPU in it.

that is NOT TRUE of all dual cpu setups, i have run several dual setups with only one cpu in it... i come up with these things from experience.... where do you come up with your ideas?

I was just about to say the same thing. Both of my Tyan Opteron boards will run with one CPU and no CPU terminator installed. In fact, I don't even think they make a socket 940 CPU terminator.

Now, the Slot 1 Pentium III 800MHz rigs at my work, require the terminator. My Abit BP6 didn't. My Intel Providence PR440FX didn't. Tualatin Pentium III based Compaq Proliants do.

It depends on the motherboard and how it was designed.

That IS TRUE of his CPU setup if you were paying attention to the fact that he had an old setup. I speak from experience and paying attention to what the hell he was saying.

You WILL cause instability and possibly other problems to an older rig, say a dual P3, if you do not run the terminator or whatever the stupid thing is called.
 
On a non-related note, since we have no idea what this guy is actually running (he hasn't responded once to this thread), I'd suggest calming down and waiting to see what exactly he's running, since there are so many different configurations out there its almost impossible to suggest anything with any certainty.

Oh, and by the way, an Abit BP6, running dual cellies, does not require a terminator. This is as old or older than dual P3 setups so just calm down.

Fair enough. I'll just walk away. I will add as a closing note that I have a dual P3-850 sitting here on an Asus P2B-DS and it requires the terminator.

Dually PII here and no problems without a terminator. Sure, I don't run it without two processors but it runs with only one.

It doesn't sound like you are in a position to comment, then, until you tried it. Stability, something you haven't tested, is the biggest concern when running without a terminator. Yes, they run. No, they aren't stable.

Where in my post did I specifically say that I have not done it? It says that nowhere. All I said was that I run with both processors for two reasons. One, it's a dually. Two, it needs all the help it can get.

Please quit trying to read more into a post than the actual information contained. I have seen before you do this to people which in turn usually ends up in a flame war or something close to it. In the future, you would be better off not assuming you know everything.

btw, I've probably put more stress on that rig in just a normal environment for me than most people do to theirs on a hard day. I would know whether it is stable or not with one or two processors. Considering the need for correct mathematical calculations on some of the stuff I have run on it, I would need a stable system no matter how it's setup so I'm pretty damn sure I now how to determine what a stable and non-stable rig is.

Have you or have you not run it in that environment for a sufficient length of time to test for stability? The answer from your post, seeing as how you are avoiding the point, appears to be no.

If it is, you have no room to talk until you have tried it. All the elaborate side stepping you are doing is meaningless. Running single processor on a dually board usually results in instability.
 
I have a IBM NetFinity 4000R 1U server that has a dually board. It only has one P3 CPU and the other slot has a terminator.

Yeah, the terminator of course makes a single proc dually board stable. :)

And you continue to avoid points I brought up. You continually read and interpret more than what is actually contained in a post every time I see one of your posts.

Also, it is in my post what I did. Since you seem to interpret so much from posts, you should have been able to figure that out. It was not a sidestep at all. Re-read it and look at the information actually contained there instead of seeing only what you want to see.

I guess I will give you the history of of board since the time I received it a couple of years ago. Originally, it was just the board with a single PII 266. I tossed some RAM in it and then an OS. If you really want I can tell you the OS I had on it if you deem that information absolutely required. After that, I ran prime95 on it as I do that with every system since I don't care for having an unstable board. I did run into some problems. Considering the jumble of RAM I had tossed in it, that didn't surprise me. At this point I swapped out RAM sticks until I found something that was stable with memtest. Again, I started up prime95 and this time there were no errors. And this wasn't a little five minute test since I'm sure that's what you would interpret it as. Considering I had plans to use this system as a file server, it's a good idea to make sure it's stable to avoid data corruption and make sure it has good uptime especially since it would be run headless. That was the time I spent on it that weekend playing with it.

It was later on, that I pulled out a second PII 266 I had in my pile and put it on the board. It was also at this point I went to the setting in the BIOS and changed it to the dual processor setting and re-installed the OS with the second CPU in there.

There has been no time that I have had a stability problem with the board once I had RAM in the machine that would play nice together. I haven't had a single lockup, blue screen or reboot of the machine except for a couple of power outages and two old hard drives that finally kicked the bucket. And this all has been done with the system under 100% load with either one or two processors in it. No, I didn't run the system for more than a few days with one CPU, but it had no stability trouble in those few days of experimenting and stress testing.

Now that you have an account of my experience with my board and processors, I would suggest you tell everyone else to do the same with their's as it would only be fair. I will warn you, though. They aren't going to be too happy about being called liars. Then again, neither am I.

Just because you have been proven wrong, does not mean you have to take it as a personal effront. Just deal with the fact that you don't know everything and move on.

 
So you had a setting that allowed you to run either one or the other by your own admission. Big deal. That neither proves nor disproves what I am saying. Basically it boiled down to a huge waste of typing. All you had to say was "My motherboard is an exception, it has a setting that allowed for one or the other" and excuse yourself from the conversation.

You proved nothing on the whole.

i ran a single chip in my dual p3 board for a couple of weeks before my second came back, as it was DOA when i recived it.

i had no problems. at all.

and no, there was no BIOS setting to enable or disable DP, it did it automatically.

however, i would not be surprised, if his system is old enough, that he would need the terminator. some boards need it, some boards dont. you and smokergns are both right, it just depends on the motherboard, period.

This is pretty much the understanding I'm at now. Some needed it, some didn't.
 
My Compaq Proliant AP550 (Dual Slot 1) doesn't 'require' the terminator, but some things I've read says it's best to use one if your only running a single processor.
Oh, and I'm looking to replace that AP550 (direct replace) so if ya know of em cheap contact me.

i did a litle research on this subject, just to make sure i was clear on it, i visited a few mobo manufacturers websites and downloaded a few mobo manuals, and from what i gathered the only dual setups that require a terminator are the old Slot 1, Slot2 setups that intel had (evidently it introduced latency or could cause signal degredation without a terminator), the Socket setups didnt suffer from the need to have a terminator, but by what others have said a terminator may not always be needed

Yes! Thank you. When I was thinking OLD, I was thinking Slot1 and 2. I have a Slot1 here. I did not, of course, realize the socket boards weren't affected. Thank you for clearing that up for me. I feel smarter now. Good job.

CPU Terminator - A card that ensures that electrical signals on a CPU bus are terminated properly in multiprocessor systems where not all CPU slots are filled with CPUs. Some multiprocessor systems require that all processor slots be full so that the processor bus is terminated properly. If you have a four-processor system but only one processor, you will need three CPU terminators to ensure proper bus termination.

Please note that systems which do not require a terminator are not any less stable when not using a terminator.

That said, the OP didn't post anything past the first post, yet this thread is now 2 pages long :rolleyes:
