Official 71.84

my temps are like 73C idle now!!

like a 13C increase!! WTF!

I guess, I won't install these drivers on my Shuttle its too hot in there already!
I know what you mean, mine did about the same. However, the interesting thing is my ambient temps went down...way down. Makes me wonder one of three things may be happening:

1. The temps are reveresed (ambient and card).
2. The improved performance that nVidia says we are getting comes from their own overclock.
3. The temps are telling the truth and the other drivers are not.

I heard something about nVidia fixing this in the next driver release. But come on are we going to have to wait another four months to get a temp bug fixed?

the problem with that (edit: #2) is that my card is only stable up to 375, and 15mhz isn't enough to bring the core temps up 10c. (which it did)
i'm guessing they broke the switch that tells the core to drop down to the low voltage state when in 2d mode.
i didn't bother testing performance because the idle temps aren't worth it.

as for the driver reporting differently, i put my hand to where my fan draws away video card air. it's definitly warmer with the 71's than the 66's

my idle temp went from 59-60 (66.93) to now 73 with the new official drivers. this sux.

my previous load temperature is now my idle temp (from ~53 to ~65)...

is this just a display bug..or does it physically increase in temp?

Thanks in advanced.

Are you forgetting that you can't overclock with the mode in 2D, but have to set it for 3D.
You probably are doing it right, but on 2 occasions I have loaded new drivers and coolbits, Went to the clock panel and set the overclock just to get an error that it wouldn't overclock at those settings. Got kinda irritated, then noticed I still had the 2D setting. Felt like such a doof. But I'm man enough to say it

that these drivers have light the blue touchpaper under UT2K4?

I've been benching and my frames have gone through the roof compared to 66.93

For example, benching using UT Mark v2.0:

1600*1200 4aa 8af, running 16 bots (max). All ingame detail maxed. Image setting = Quality, vertical sync off.

66.93 - 36.2fps
71.84 - 51.8fps

I'm very impressed, that's gotta be worth a WOOT :D

No, I tried both the 2D and 3D :). Anyone else have this issue with these drivers?

Just edit your own bios to the clocks you want & flash.

Here's a guide: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=801537&page=1&pp=20

But be careful to only flash to clocks that you KNOW are 100% stable.

Yeah I had considered this option, but I am not 100% sure of my system stability with certain clocks on my GPUs.

In some games 415 1130 works fine, but in others it seems i need 410 1100... However, even then I notice some erro occuring usually after a couple hours of play ( I am thinking that this is definately heat related so I am going to replace the stock coolers)

Anyway I constantly change my overclocks and it is annoying when I can play around with settings...

Is it confirmed that RivaTuner will NOT work on overclocking with 71.84 and SLI ?

Kind of an intersting point, because my GPU temps on 66.93 are 42 and 39, my ambients are usually around 60 on both...

I have always wondered why my ambient temps are so high but the core is cooler... hrm...

i am - every setting over stock fails........

i have 2x 6800gt BFG's in sli........on water so i should get more than 370 you would think!!

RTFM!

the driver release states that on some cards the temperatures will report wrong and that it will be fixed in a "future release".. The drivers don't actually make your card hotter in reality. Only in a (wrong) number on your screen.

I did, but I can't overclock anymore with it. Anytime I try to change frequencies, it says that it failed the test and won't let me run anything over stock speed.

another limitation stated in the new (beta) drivers is that coolbits wont work in SLI mode. So that's why some people have been able to overclock still, because they aren't in SLI mode.

Think that's about all.
Read the release notes.
Just read limitations if you don't want to read all the pages ;)

Now for a question that's not in the release notes:

Anyone know what the "HiRes Desktop Scaling" button is for? I haven't noticed it before..
It's found under "nView Display settings" in the "GeForce xxxx" Tab of advanced display properties.

Glen.

N.B. Renegade87 your signature is out of control. Way to many lines, there are rules.

didnt change my temps at all. ill stick with these. some games seem to run smoother.

They don't exactly say that though, check the wording. They never said the read is incorrect, or if there is an actual increase in heat generated.

GeForce 6800: The ʹTemperature Settingsʹ in the Display Properties
reports an approximately 20% higher temperature than with the
previous driver version.
This issue will be fixed in the next driver release.

See, this is how we get a speed increase now, just forcibly overclock our cards to give us more performance :).

"fixed in a future release" ....... five or six months from now :(

no overclocking.
it's not dropping down to the 2d voltage.
so when you're at the desktop, the gpu is being the 1.3v that it normally gets in games
normal voltage = 1.2v
(1.3/1.2)^2 = 1.176, or about 17.6% increase in heat output.
sounds about right, no?

Why does o/c'ing the 2d by anything at all fix it though (and it does, I have seen this with my own eyes)?

not sure, i changed the speed on mine and it didn't bring the temps down. i think you have to go over 400mhz..
before oc'ing the 2d speed did the opposite. 350mhz = normal temps, anything else, even an underclock, brought it up about the same amount i'm seeing now, which is why i'm convinced it's a voltage issue.

After I upgraded, my idle temps went up to 79 (Ambient temps were very high at the time as well though), and simply changing the 2d clock from 400 to 403 dropped it back down to 64-65.

It just strikes me as a pretty wierd bug, when a workaround is that simple, how hard can a resolution be?

yeah. i'm sticking with 66.93 in the meantime. i can't deal with those idle temps :(

I have been running this driver for the past 2 days with my 6800 Ultra with modded bios to run at 435 / 1200 and 1.5v in 3d mode and I have yet to see any temperature increase at all and Half Life 2 does run a bit smoother than with the 66.93 driver. :D

When i first installed the 71.84's, I noticed that my idle temp when up by 10c. When looking around and found that setting the 2D core to 401MHz would fix the temp bug. Much like setting to 400 with the 71.20 drivers I had before. Well it worked for me I saw a 10c drop in temps while idle. Plus the 71.84's fixed my WC3 vid problems.

The 71.84's killed my 3dmark05 score by almost 1000 points (from a 4800 to a 3800). Killed 3dMark01 by about 400 points and 3dMark 03 by 300. WTF? Is anyone else noticing this? I went back to my old drivers, these are lame.

I'll never understand why people judge drivers by artificial benchmarks, unless all you really want to do with your computer is crank out useless 3dmark scores. I mean, it's common knowledge that benchmarks like those mean nothing when it comes to real world performance (actual games), so who cares?

Did you do the Driver Cleaner procedure?

Download and install Driver Cleaner. Uninstall nVidia Drivers from the Control Panel. Reboot into Safe Mode. Run DC and select the nVidia display drivers to remove. Reboot and install the new drivers (disabling virus scanning software is recommended) and reboot once more.

Hello.

Does anyone else get weird graphic errors in Windows when using these drivers? Im using a BFG 6600 GTOC. The 66.93 drivers work fine, but as soon as the 71.84 drivers are installed the glitches appear.

I installed the 71.84 drivers after cleaning up the old drivers with driver cleaner, booting into safe mode to do it etc. So im guessing its a problem with the drivers? Any solutions?

Thank you

can u be more specific on the error??? what does it saY?

intalled 71.84 drivers: Warcraft 3 issues I had went away for me. But I started to get artifacting in BF BFV. So I will be removing them

You have a VIA chipset MB, don't you? If your glitches are corrupted icons/desktop, you have joined the ranks of some other VIA users that seem to have been left behind all the latest Nvidia drivers.

i don't notice anything that bad...i don't even have a temp monitor, damn PNY...oh well..one problem though, when i play ut2004 and i alt tab and go back in...i get a gpf...i don't know why...probably cuz the vid card got hot?? who knows..oh well...i still like the driver...

these caused me MAJOR hitching in games - the last officials (66.81 i think) never did that, so i rolled back...

that's curious. i've found that if my games get major pauses, it's normally a ventilation/heat issue... though drivers shouldn't effect that.
random incompatibility?

well, i dunno - it doesnt do it with the offcials before these, and it doesnt do it with the 71.20's so i have no idea whats wrong. ive tested this in FC and 3dmark05... both got major pauses in game, even when my card was on stock... going from 66.81 ->71.20 saw performance increases, but at the cost of a lower OC :(

Ditto.

"Waaah! I upgraded my drivers and now Useless3DBenchmark 1.2 is 35 Bungholiomarks lower! I better downgrade my drivers so I don't need some eViagra! I feel inferior to all my friends! These drivers suck! Waaah!"

Geez, I could care less if a driver is slower in 3DMark if it fixes a major display bug in a game or two I'm playing or increases their performance or display quality. There's more to life than freaking 3DMark.

yeah, but if you upgrade your drivers and all the sudden the opening scene on 05 drops from 34FPS to 21, you can pretty much assume that something is going on - thats what i use it for.

You can try to assume that --but if the benchmark doesn't render using the same methods as games you play, that assumption might not be correct. If it were me, I'd do a full uninstall of the old drivers, install the new ones, and then compare results in the games I regularly play to results I'd gotten in the same situation with the previous drivers for both performance and image quality. I'd do it with both OpenGL and DirectX9 games to check too. At least you'd get a more accurate idea of what's really going on.

while this is true and is a better test of what is going on, do you not think it would be wise to first run a synthetic bench to see if anything is totally out of whack? i mean, everytime i install a driver i dont run through a bunch of time demos to make sure its working right - i just wanna boot up and play... so if 3dmark comes up and it has dropped (in this case) almost 50% - i assume something is up and go off to test a little more. if i see a gain, i figure everything is ok and only test it out if something starts going wrong in games..

i think 05 is a good preliminary test to find problems. the end all? hell no - but it is a good indicator of something that is wrong. the engine argument (IMO) can only be applied in these rediculous scoring thing - think of it this way... if the 3dmark05 engine is running at 34fps with a driver set and then the same 3dmark05 engine drops to 21fps with another... same engine, huge decrese in performance - would that not worry you?
