i think 05 is a good preliminary test to find problems. the end all? hell no - but it is a good indicator of something that is wrong. the engine argument (IMO) can only be applied in these rediculous scoring thing - think of it this way... if the 3dmark05 engine is running at 34fps with a driver set and then the same 3dmark05 engine drops to 21fps with another... same engine, huge decrese in performance - would that not worry you?
not at all, why do you need a preliminary test when you mostlikely have your game installed? Fire it up.
Just because i change the type of oil and gass in my saab, and suddenly the saab gets a lower gas milage, doesnt mean putting said oil/ gas mixture in my volvo is gonna produce the same performance loss. It means that every saab of exactly the same make and model MAY experiance the same performance loss. They call them synthetic benchamrks for a reason.
now if nvidia specifically said that thier drivers would increase your synth-benchie scores and they dont, thats a different story. If nvidia says that thier drivers will do such in such and they do what they say they will, then lower synth-benchie scores as a side affect isnt a bad deal cause realistically no games play using 3dmark engines.
even after running aqua mark, it generates a reality check saying how well your card/system can run thier game aquanox...
on a side not, if 3dmark was smart they would come out with a moddable game engine... and give it out free to the gamers.. THEN thier benchies would have some pull.
