Odd MX1000 Problem

Ok, odd problem here with my new mouse, ever so often the cursor will jump upwards in the screen about an inch or two... It always jumps upwards, not in any other direction, and it doesn't seem tied to any particular motion or action.

Sometimes it'll happen right as I initally grab it and start moving, other times I'll be moving it about all over the place and will happen suddenly. It's pretty sporadic (can happen a couple times in a row or go on for a couple minutes without happening).

I want to make it clear that this has nothing to do with the oddball problems others have reported when picking the mouse up, I haven't noticed anything weird when I pick the mouse up and it seems to work just fine in that regard (it doesn't automatically turn off when I pick it up like others have reported).

I also don't beleive that it's something that's happening merely because it's a wireless mouse, I have a much cheaper Logitech Mouseman Click! here for a secondary rig that doesn't suffer from this problem at all (it was the first wireless mouse I ever tried out for ocasional gaming and I was pleasantly surprised with it).


Anyone else experiencing this or heard of it? Did I just get a dud maybe? I tried running some searches on this problem but all I could find was reports of people freaking out over it's behavior when picked up (whatever). All I found was this:

i just bought my MX1000 couple days ago. the buttons feel great, i like the weight of it. I dont experience any lag BUT i do get curser jump. It seems randomly the curser will jump about 1/8" (on screen) for no reason. This is a common problem if you read the Logitech forums.

You may try to move the base to a different position on your desk. Try to keep it away from the computer, the monitor or any other electrical devices. You can also try moving it closer for further away from the mouse.

As far as I can tell, no, it's most annoying when it jumps as I'm about to hit an icon/button obviously but it'll also jump eventually if I just go and move it in the middle of the desktop from side to side for instance.

I'll try playing with the base's position, right now it's near the decoder/amp for my speakers (though I think it was doing this even before I turned on the amp) and somewhat near the actual tower (about a foot or 10 inches I guess).

I had already tried mousing on different surfaces and even right next to the base (since it's on the other side of the desk than where the mouse is atm) but hadn't thought of the base's position, duh, thanks.

hey, I have the same problem. It only happens about once or twice a day, but the damn thing certainly does jump about an inch straight up. I'm glad its not just me.

EDIT, what kind of mousepad are you using? I have a white "radpadz" type. I'm thinking maybe that has something to do with it

Hmm, my jump certainly happens more often than once or twice a day. It's sporadic like I said but still happens more often than that... Probably at 'least a couple times an hour? Dunno, it can go a few minutes without doing it and it can do it twice in the same minute.

I'm using a fUnc 1030 (blue surface, has some texture like a ratzpad) but that's definitely not the problem as it'll do the same even on the wood of my desk.

I was really hoping that moving the base at 'least 8 in. away from anything else electronic like the instructions suggest would've solved the problem but it didn't. It's on the other side of my desk now away from anything whatosoever and I still get these odd jumps, it'll be moving fine and smooth then suddenly skip an inch or two upwards in the screen, then keep moving fine.

Grr... Time to take it back to CompUSA or RMA it if they won't exchange it I guess.

Don't rma it just yet..... That program, whatpulse..... it does that to you. i had a similar problem before, if you have it enabled just fully uninstall it and you'll be cool.

What program? I don't have any program called "whatpulse" or anything akin to that, the install is basically new and I'm not even done installing al my apps yet. Basically just Office, Mozilla, firewall/AV, CPUID, and drivers right now... And if you're reffering to the Logitech software (Setpoint), I clearly remember this happened even before I installed it (I installed a number of drivers and configured some windows stuff with the mouse just plugged in without Setpoint).

Mine did this also....

I went searching through the logitech forums (worst ever) and found a post from someone at logitech. It said to unplug the mouse cradle from usb and use the serial adapter. Ever since I did that my mouse no longer jumps up.

The minute I switch back to usb it happens

I can't even find the Logitech forums, go figure, I might try what you've suggested (I assume you mean the PS/2 adapter) but I shouldn't have to do that in order to get it working correctly... Hrm.

Can't even place the base optimally if I have to do that since the cord is so short (and yes I've had it plugged directly into a USB port on the back, that's how it was first set up, jumps no matter what USB port it's on).

Using an ASUS A8V mobo in case it matters any, never touched the USB options in the BIOS I believe, I did install the VIA USB 2.0 drivers when I set up the OS I think though.

So, I ran a slightly more defined search on Google ("mx1000 screen jump problem") and came up with some interesting info... Apparently there's some defective bases out there, running them thru PS/2 does seem to fix the problem for most people but that's kinda shoddy.

Not even sure if I should bother returning it to CompUSA now as they have a ton that have been sitting on the shelf for a long while and I might get an equally defective one... We'll see, looks like I might end up RMA'ing it after all. Here's some of what I found, someone quoted this on the Anand boards off Logitech's site supposedly:

I'm using the latest Setpoint btw, so it didn't solve the prob. There's a lot more regarding the base in this thread (there's also some bitching about the "pick-up lag" which I haven't experienced... think the only way you can is if you've got the sensitivity way down and are really looking for it):

Edit: My base has exactly that M/N, C-BN34, grrr. Wonder if they'll let me open one up at CompUSA before I take it out of the store to check the base. I was reading the above thread from the start and there's reports of various people being told by Logitech support of defective bases, what a drag.

Edit #2: It seems most, if not all, MX1000s with the S/N starting in LZC come with a base that doesn't have the cursor jumping issue while many LZBs do (though not all). They've also changed the package supposedly according to that thread so the S/N is no longer visible from the outside but I dunno if this is tied to newer S/Ns or not. Will update after I visit CompUSA.

Well, I got lucky and managed to exchange it at CompUSA today (the girl at the Consumer Serv. desk was new and had nearly processed the exchange before she realized more than 14 days had passed, so she finished anyway).

I grabbed one of the newer version boxes on the shelf (the ones that don't show the back of the mouse and have more reflective decor on the outer cardboard images)... Inside I found an LZB. I had actually opened another one at the store (was on the floor and the tape was falling off) and inside there was an LZC so I guessed (wrong) that all the new boxes had LZCs inside.

In any case, this LZB doesn't have the jumping cursor problem at all from what I can tell so far... So if you're picking up a new one I'd go by the box rather than trying to open 'em up to check the S/N or M/N. Just avoid the older ones with the same U-shape in the back as in the front (that shows you the S/N and M/N) and grab one of the shinier ones.
