So which is 'better' the xbox version or the pc version? How consolized was the pc version? (for instance I hear the standard commands such as j and i do not exist). Does this make the game truely annoying on the pc or is it ok ? (has anyone actually tried both?). Hum does anyone know if they plan to add keybaord commands to the pc version via patch ?

Well, if you have a decent computer, or would like the immediate benefits of mods, I'd definitely say the PC version..

I have no doubt both platforms will get patched (well I HOPE atleast).

The original HUD/UI is definitely XBoxed - Its sad to say, but it looks like they made the xbox version and ported to PC, so everything is built around a TV screen. Example: big fonts, only really looks good with widesceen resolutions, details and settings maxed makes it look like the xbox version.

However with the PC version fixes for this problem and many other things (including the muddy water) are already out in force as small mods for Oblivion.

http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/article.asp?SCID=27&CIID=36222&p=5

they take seconds to install and use and they make the game 10 times better, and the tweak about 'no soup for you' makes your PC look BETTER then the xbox version..
The UI mod in the link is really awesome, makes it a more PC-centric system and makes everything just better.

I totally recommend the PC version, there are more mods comming and people will just constantly add their own stuff to the game.

I've got both and the Xbox version is in my opinion superior OOTB experience. This may change once I can tweak mine so its playable with more than 3 characters onscreen without dropping fps to unacceptable levels

Pretty much the same thing for me. Framerate for me is much more solid on the XBox as opposed to on my PC. Hopefully in 6 months I"ll upgrade the PC and switch over to that.

i played the 360 version at a buddies house

sitting on the couch playing on a big plasma screen was a pleasant experience and it looked just about as good as the PC version...but i kept wishing for mouse control and the extra buttons of a keyboard
:(

Im going to have to say that the PC version looks better on good hardware. My buddy has it on 360 and I cant help but think it looks like the equivelent of running the game in 800x600 on a PC.. And it chugs and stutters as much if not more than what ive seen from the PC version. Overall , I like the PC version.

Is he playing on an SDTV or HDTV.

As far as graphics go with Oblivion, its a bit of a toss up on the platform. PC has higher resolution capabilities and the INI tweaking. However, on 360 you have both 4xAA and HDR. PC does one or the other, not both. So... depending on whats more important to you.

I myself have played both, and prefer it on 360. I like how the controller handles the game. It's odd, concidering I am largly into FPS on PC, so the mouse and keybaord woudl seem like a shoein, but the game works well on a console.

IMHO, there are two reasons to get it on PC. Modding comunity, and the POTENTIAL for expansion packs to come out on PC before 360. Other than that, I am glad I got it on 360. It seems to be easier to pick up and play. Plus, I keep telling myself, all the folding time I would have lost if I got it on PC :D

But the PC version can also run at 1600x1200 or higher res with HDR on, xbox 360 cant. I play at 1600x1200 with HDR on and get decent framerates I have yet to see it drop below 25FPS.

I own the PC, and rented the 360 to compare and as others have stated, both have their ups and downs.

PC does give resolutions that surpass the 360, and running at 1600x1050 widescreen in ultra-high with forced 8xaf I get a beautiful game experience with framerates that constently stay above 30fps (amdx2 4400+ oc'd to 2.6ghz, x1900xt thats flashed and OC'd to +xtx speeds, 2gb ram, 21inch widescreen monitor). The benefit of running the mods mentioned at the top of the page really help as well.

360 looks almost as good, but I can play on my HDTV and sit on the couch. The controller works surprisingly well, and I think the lock picking is easier with the controller over the mouse. Not as accurate for things like shooting arrows, but this isn't much of an accuracy game otherwise so it works fine for everything else.

Of the two, I prefer the PC as I like being able to tweak things and using mods that improve my gaming experience. Plus, fighting my wife for the big screen just isn't much fun :) Take in mind, though, that this year was my year 3 upgrade so I'm running on a fairly high end PC. Those with older hardware will have a different experience.

The easy decisions are if you have a beast rig, then probably go PC for mods etc. Another easy one is if you have an xbox360 and your PC gpu is 2 years old, then xbox. Everything else is tougher.

my only gripe on the xbox is the menu(yeah blame the menu on the xbox if you want but i tell you morrowind menu worked better with a controller/ie you could do things faster)

and also the dead zone of the joystick is to big making it diffucult to make accurate headshots with a bow, i often find myself strafeing to aim because of its lesser senseitivity

1st of all, the 360 will do a 1920 x 1080 interlaced picture in 1080i on a HDTV at 30 frames per second. it will probably do the same with VGA cables hooked up to a monitor.

The #2 thing i want to comment on is the interface. "The interface is nerfed because of the xbox 360 and the noob stick" is about the dumbest thing i've ever heard. the interface is crap, because thats the way they made it.

I like how the quests are listed in the UI, but the inv for weapons, armor, spells, etc is just crap. So is the map.

The maximum HD resolution that the 360 will display is 720p, not 1080i. It will upconvert the 720p to 1080i, but it is not actually rendering at the full 1920x1080.

yes, and the UI IS nerfed because of the 360. They were lazy and didnt put the effort into improving the PC version. thankfully, mods are making this less of an issue.

Correct. It usually looks better in 720p anyways.

Depends on your setup.
Are you playing on a dual-processor AMD64 system with quad SLI, or are you on something "normal?"
Are you playing the Xbox360 on a 70" Plasma HD with 5.1...or on something "normal?"
For every answer someone gives that's playing on some crazy set-up, there are 10 people who are playing on something lesser that experience something different.
Out of the box, if you have HD, the Xbox is likely better (unless your PC is a screamer and you have a big monitor).
However, the PC has mods galore for every situation and complaint. If there's something you do or don't like, there's likely an enhancement or replacement for it.
The Xbox will only get a "patch" if there's a MAJOR issue that's easily fixable.
At the end of the day, it also comes down to preference in controls. Some people hate using pads and some people hate using keyboard/mouse. Play what you're comfy with. It's still 95% the same game.

Not to open a whole other can-o-worms or hijack the thread...but that depends on what kind of HDTV you have.

its effective resolution is still 1920 x 1080 no matter how you look at it. if you take a monitor whos native resolution is 1080x768, but your vid card allows you to to scale the image to 1920 x 1080, is it not the same thing? Isnt this like the pot calling the kettle black? im almost certain the majority of peoples monitors do not do 1920x1200 or 1920X1440(4:3) natively, theyd be lucky if it does it as a max value right?

360 on a VGA monitor im reading does a max res of 1360x768 @ a 16:9 ratio on a WXGA monitor. which is only marginally better then 720p.

And if you want to get into price... i dont have a $3-$4G PC and a $1400 1920x1200 res. 8ms monitor. but my DLP projector with 106" screen, xbox360, and a copy of oblivion is less then that monitor alone, and the game looks better right out of the box then the PC version.

gurgle, you make me laugh. like the 360 can't handle any other interface then the one they gave to oblivion. it sucks on 360 for the same reasons it sucks on pc.

I traded my X360 version for the PC version.. after some 10 hours of gameplay, too.. so if that doesn't say something.

I traded it for the PC version because of the mod community. When there was a bug, they fixed it, when there's something that can be done better, they mod it. Played better on my X360, but looks so much better (and sounds better) on my PC.

See... I'd like the modding stuff as well, but I still say I made the right choice. Folding FTW.

And... looks so much better? What your gaining in resolution your either loosing in AA or HDR. It should look very similar. I think perhaps you are simply enjoying the placebo effect

Definitive answer to end all debates in this matter (hopefully):

"To each their own."

thats a lie, esp since there are some 360 games out there rendered in the frame buffer at 1920x1080

I checked in the BSA files for textures and meshes...there are actual filenames that says Xbox_menu_large

....so yeah whoever said the thing about it being xbox made...there's your proof...

Same thing here, I got the PC version first then got the 360 version, comparing the two I couldn't help but get the feeling that this game was mainly designed for the 360. The controls, the UI, the graphics (I messed with my PC for hours trying to get the COLORS to look as vivid as it is on the 360 but couldn't, I think it's mainly due to HDR being applied differently) and just the overall feel of the thing seem like they were made for a console but not a PC.

Don't get me wrong, I have 10+ hours of play time logged on my PC and only about 3 on the Xbox, which is mainly because I closed the first oblivion gate on my PC and didn't want to go through that experience anytime soon again. But still, the Xbox version just seems more polished and well configured.

I think I'll keep both though, mods are something I like.

I don't have a shitty PC btw, check the sig.

Actually I think the burden of proof lies with the person that said that it only does 720p internally and upscales for 1080i. I'm curious to know where you got this information.

I have the PC version and after running through a list and doing the "no soup" and other various mods. I also made the water clearer and better looking and have a black unicorn instead of a black horse I am mightly impressed. I agree it was made for the Xbox and this is why I think it doesnt run that great on PC. Had it been coded for PC from the beginning I think it would have ran very smoothly on more lower end hardware.

I always have a harcore PC, so having my 7900 GTX and overclocked Opty would have been there for this game or any otther game thats tips my fancy. It runs this game great at 1600x1200 with HDR on and everything maxed. Never even drops below 30 FPS when outside fighting 3 enemies and having my horse in the scene.

I like it just fine, but thank you for asking :)

You have no idea how much I love just plopping in a disc, and then playing it at full detail with good frame rates. No driver or compatibility related problems either. I do plan on picking up the PC version for the mods, but that won't be till I beat the game in 200+ hours.

Correct. The Xbox 360 can output at both 720p and 1080i. However, SOME (not all) games only run at 720p and are upconverted for TVs that only run 1080i. Mostly the only games that run at 1080i are Xbox Live Marketplace games such as Geometry Wars, but you could also get standalone games to do it (at the risk of having a crappy framerate).

Yea no shit. where some people have played an hour or less then their PC had a heart attack on them, im half way though the game already. I also like it because alot of the PC guys cant handle how much harder it is then Morrowind, which in turn makes them load up some god mod.... whats the point in even playing it at that point?
