Nvidia vs. ATI - Linux benchmarks

Worthless review. They only use the 12 pipe x800Pro against the 6800U. And who the fuck cares about Linux anyways.

Another grade A winner topic TranyC!!

Ignorant shit, it compares a wide variety of cards and on the 1 vs 1 benchmarks it's the 6800 vs X800 Pro, both have 12 pipes.

Read things before you get all uppity and make yourself look like a dumbass.

This is why I will never buy an ATI card for my system. I have no problems recommending ATI to others when it is applicable, but I support those that support open source. ATI's half hearted attempts to make a driver don't count.

Of course it is, ATI isn't winning. Any game where ATI loses is crap and any OS where ATI sucks on is useless.

Don't think even a 24 pipe x800 if that existed would survive the performance loss ATI is showing in Linux, as the 12 pipeline x800pro is being beaten in nearly every test by last year's 2 pipe 5700 Ultra.

And people who use Linux care about it obviously.

There are some things that ATi just don't care about - Linux and OpenGL are two of them. Maybe they don't have enough people in driver development to worry about anything except D3D (which they excel at). What's best....Jack of all trades or master of one? Arguably, D3D is most important for the majority of folks here but I still prefer all-round ability.

Yep, Mister E did make himself look like a dumbdick. :)

B/c they were comparing a 12 pipe vs. 12 pipe.

But the 6800's you can get for $250-$299, where the X800 Pros' are $100+ more expensive. So technically they should have been comparing the X800 Pro to the 6800GT. B/c both of those are selling at the same price.

They should compare on the same price point. BTW, Outpost still has the 6800GT's for $349 and 6800's for $249!!

of course this bench is worthless...because linux is such a gaming platform

What else do you NEED a $200 - $300 video card for?

We're working on benchmarking Doom 3 in Linux ATM. It's not ATi vs. nVidia as much as it is Windows vs. Linux in D3.

Just the obvious teaser: ATi's less-than-stellar D3 performance is only compounded by their less-than-stellar Linux drivers. :(

he said the bench was worthless due to linux not having great game support (i agree). however not everyone uses linux for gaming etc. and btw CAD usually needs a good £300-£400 card for best results

I bet thats right. It wouldn't surprise me if the X800Pro dipped down into the single digits at max settings lol. But wait, doesn't it do that under Windows as well? ;)

Linux' gaming support is only going to continue to grow as its market matures.

For BEST results I think professional 3D cards are a bit more than that.

CAD, video rendering, etc.... These kind of cards start at $200/300..

My point was that professionals don't in general use commercial gaming cards for those applications. Note he said for BEST results. An entry level professional card isn't going to provide any where near BEST results.

Wow, I really need to stop checking out every post that I see as the most recent post in each forum in the main index.....cus this is just sad. I'm not going to say that the benchmark are/aren't completely useless.....but let me just say that there ARE people who're going to be interested in the numbers. A lot of games that don't offer native Linux support can often still be run via emulation.....and Linux gaming is slowly becoming more popular. It's still moving at quite a slow pace, but it is developing....and I commend Anandtech on taking a step forward to show what's really going on.

Even though reading some of these immature posts in this thread makes me almost ashamed to call [H] my home I still had to chime in with my two cents, because it seems that some people are just to plain ignorant to come to their own conclusions.

There are quite a few people around here (not just in this thread) who really need to grow up and listen to some of the stuff they're saying, but kudos to those of you that are standing amidst the mess, trying to make things right.

WINE, you can call it what you want sure it may not be a true emulator, but it is a software translator or wrapper no matter how you look at it. That two games used it still shows how immature Linux support is. Its still emulating something, and that is OpenGL on the Windows platform.

Neither the ATi or Nvidia card seems to work with AF, which just completely kills off linux as a gaming platform for me. The first one to implement AF will be at great advantage (Sure Nvidia is winning the performance race right now, but with no AF, it looks hella crappier than Windows versions of the same games)

Thanks for already saying this.

the cards most talked about on this forum are gaming cards (and in the topic link). They aren't professional. yes they can do 3D apps and CADs but aren't ideal cards for the level performance you want with mainstream cards

If you are going to run gaming cards for professional apps on linux, you'd think you'd do your research on getting what card will benefit you most.

Doom 3 is being ported over to linux as i type this. I also can play a few other games that support it natively, like ut2k3,ut2k4, Tactical Ops, just to name a few FPS'. There are others as well i wouldn't mind playing on linux instead of a bloated windows system. And there are a hell of a lot of linux gamers out there, so I say your comment is quite wrong. :)

if were gonna be like that then i may aswell refer to yur first post:

What else do you NEED a $200 - $300 video card for?

i simply pointed out that CAD work is something you may NEED a video card for (and they may not be the best in this enviroment but even basic 'gaming' graphics cards can still do well in CAD based work)

how ever there are several other projects out there, and last i recall wineX (now called cedega) worked with a ton of games.

And I'm sure you ment it emulates D3D, seeing as it doesn't need to emulate OpenGL.

yea...few games. it's not a gaming platform nor ideal for playing games
That's like saying a Mac is great gaming system because it gets 5 games in 1 year (yes that is an exaggeration...it's 7 games)

plus with to point out with my earlier post:
You don't hear a lot of people going "my ****** card beat your ***** card in 3D studio or lightwave or whatever you want"

Thats ok, that FX5200 on your $2000 Mac is going to run games such as Doom3 like butter

Just because it isn't the best overall gaming platform doesn't mean people don't use it for gaming. WineX makes a lot of games compatible and a couple great games have native Linux clients (Doom3, UT2004, Q3, Neverwinter Nights). Saying that Linux sucks for gaming isn't justification for ATI's scores for the people that use Linux.

Heck, I don't use Linux for gaming usually (sometimes with Q3), but I like the option and I really like it when companies support it.

So linux users are telling me that you're going to spend 500 dollars on a video card...just to play a handful of games that work on it (for either company's card)? That seems a little crazy to me. That doesn't make a good gaming system or sound gaming system OR financially smart or (Just wanted to type 'or' three times).

That's not a gaming OS.
people still have Virtual Boy I'm sure, not a lot a games for it. Not a good gaming system.
You need support of game companies to actually have a gaming system

Linux is actaully a good gaming system, but developers don't make game for Linux, because there aren't enough users and if the game isn't popular there is no profit in it. Thats why you only see the big time games on Linux.

Another wonderfully observant statement from the great MisterPeeWee. Shouldn't you be in jail for molesting underaged video cards? HEH HEH!

Still, these benchs are useless to me as I'm not a linux user. *Shrugs*

That's what I just said though. That's why it's not a good gaming platform. Even if a game plays faster on it, if there aren't many games for it it's not a gaming platform not does it warrant buying either video cards to play games

SM3 and 3Dc offer both current cards great performance hikes in games...IF it has support.

Who cares what ya think this post if for Linux users lol, if you don't use Linux don't post here its irrelevent to you. Linux users don't need a windows users input because they don't use Linux, nothing personal, just sounds kinda rough.

On a side not if ATi improves their Linux drivers it would automatically improve thier Ogl performance under windows.....

Also Linux supports Sm 3.0 since its part of Ogl 2.0, and if ATi has extensions for 3dc in Ogl then yes that too is supported in Linux too
