Nvidia Permenantly Blocking Overclocking

Who cares if someone is attacking me. Attack the facts then maybe I would care.
The images I posted tell it all and that's fact.

When was the last time a laptop fried from nvidia gpu overclocking? I can't recall a single instance where someone brought that up in the last five years. They limited the oc on Maxwell because either it overcloks too well or there's an underlying problem with mobile Maxwell that gets exposed when it's done. Otherwise I can't think of any other logical reason for them to do this. Keep in mind they left Kepler mobile alone.

Lets get this thread back on topic and stop with the personal attacks.

Life will find a way

Hah, was just thinking the same. I'm sure the experts over at NBR and elsewhere are already working on a solution. It still won't be as easy, I'm sure, as installing MSI Afterburner and will require a modded vbios. I guess it will be like we're going back to 2006.

As far as ASUS is concerned, apparently they have a VBIOS that allows it - so the software changes do not matter (assuming you use GPU Tweak):

GPU tweak is all greyed out. Turning it on or off changes the GPU speed 0mhz, verified by GPU-z. I purchased this laptop as overclocking the GPU was a key selling point. Thought I would be able to push closer to 980M performance. No my $1800 laptop has been Nvidia Ninja Nerfed. This is not what i paid for. Nvidia/ASUS should offer compensation to those that bought this expecting to get the ADVERTIZED overclocking capability.

That post is from your link. It seems things are still rough even if you rolled with ASUS.
Also to everyone saying driver hacks etc, keep this in mind.
To advocate for some unofficial solution that will not be consistent is noble but not smart. Fact is relying on 3rd parties (people in there basements) to allow you to OC will be finicky at best. I have yet to see some 3rd party solution for anything that I would call a pleasant experience to use.

Is cooling really adequate in most mobile devices to support any real overclocking anyway?

Overclocking a laptop - to me - seems like a one way ticket to overheating and dead battery town.

That being said, I have never owned a laptop, and never used on with discrete graphics.

Not in my opinion, but others here will berate you incessantly for what you just wrote.

This has to be the biggest slap in the face yet!!!! When you buy something, you own it, just void the warranty like usual and its fine with me.

Are they wrong to believe advertisements that Nvidia and there partners put out? Advertisements such as these?

It seems to me that Nvidia can never do wrong in your mind. Even when its a simple cut and dry, black and white, situation such as this.
Many laptops provide more than adequate cooling for OCing the CPU and GPU. Many Laptops are sold on such features. CUSTOMERS HAVE A RIGHT TO BE UPSET.
They are berating you because you just ignore it over and over again.

Are you expressing all this outrage because you have a laptop with an Nvidia GPU, or are you just white-knighting Nvidia customers again?

I am expressing outrage because its outrageous.
When ATi fucked up by cheating did you just expect only ATi customers to get upset?
No the entire fucking community got upset.
This thread should cease being a "did Nvidia fuck up?" thread and turn into a thread that channels that anger into a positive outcome for people who Overclock.
Honestly this issue should bring people together in outrage. I typically do not OC my GPUs but I usually OC my CPU. Practices like this are dangerous for all of us.
Want something positive about Nvidia?
The GTX980 is the most efficent high end GPU on the market with advanced features such as DSR, G-sync, and PhysX. The 980 runs quiet and provides the most GPU horsepower for any gamer today. I am not biased to this fact and you should not be biased to the fact that this practice of removing features that were advertised should be shunned upon.

I'm not terribly mad about this but I am a little miffed. I just bought a MSI GS60 with the GTX 970m and while I dont plan to overclock it if I never need to I wont have the option anymore. I am still wondering if I want to update the drivers.

Quite right. Anyone who overclocks here should be angered by this move, regardless of whether they have a mobile GPU or not, and regardless of company. In fact, any consumer should be concerned by this move. It's as if you bought a car that was advertised to have an FM radio, then the vendor that makes the car stereo decides it wants to come into your driveway to disable it.

Yes laptops have been over-engineered for years so you can overclock components. My Sager built Clevo's have all allowed overclocking headroom. My recent one hasn't as much but thats because it only comes with a 180w PSU. I have not only my GPU overclocked but also my CPU and the temps are completely acceptable, in fact much better than most mainstream brands out of the box. (Looking at you HP and Toshiba....)
