hey all,

building a system and heres whats gonna be in er:

antec p183
1T HDD
620 enermax PSU
Intel i5 processor
Asus Sabertooth 55i
windows 7 pro 64 bit
6 gigs Crucial DDR3

Card?--- I was looking at the Geforce GTX 260, but I want to get some recommendations from users! any advice would be great. looking to build the system within the next few weeks!

because ive always had trouble with ATI cards.....

yeah, but your thread is about a recommendation. it's misleading...I expected the thread to be a fanboy rant about how ATI sucks.

Anyway, a recommendation is impossible without knowing what games you'll be playing and at what resolution.

OK just to be clear though: You do know that you will be paying more money for less or equal performance with a Nvidia card right?

sorry if I posted in the wrong section or if my title is misleading... I dont know diddly about Graphics cards.. ill be playing games like modern warfare 2, Source, CS,.... mainly FPS and whatever else I see fit to my liking... I dont know about res. probably max resolution?

I agree with you that ATi cards are generally more trouble in my experience BUT these days they are pretty good. They don't have many problems, they get their drivers signed and so on. Their drivers aren't quite as slick as the nVidia drivers, particularly with regards to per application settings, but they work well enough.

I decided to get a 5870 because of that, and I'm not sorry I did. Good card. At this point, ATi has the better offerings at the high end for the money. I would recommend going with them.

If you absolutely don't want to, then the 260 or 285. If you get the 260 make sure you get the Core 216 version. It not only has more cores unlocked than the original 260, it is on a smaller process and so is cooler and higher clocked. Most 260s these days are Core 216s, but make sure. You don't want to save $10 on a card only to find out you got an older one that is a good deal slower.

lol I thought I did.. and thanks for the recommendation! I was thinking the 260 or the 285

Some 216s were built on a 65nm process as well. And a 285 isn't worth it. Definitely not. Try to find a couple of new/used GTX260s or 275s and put them in SLI, it'll still be cheaper than a single 285.

You don't need a 260 or a 285 for Source games and MW2. Save some money and get like a GTS250 or buy yourself a bigger monitor.

I have a 285 on a 24 inch monitor and those are the two main games I play, although I have a lot more demanding titles that I just lost interest in. If I had known this is all I would play, I'd have spent a lot less on a vid card.

they all look the same to me, ill just pick one from the GTS/GTX series

No you didn't answer this question:

Don't bother with the GTS 2xxx series. not worth it.

what ads? you're just being completely illogical. obvious fanboy is obvious.

Yes, the OP admitted he/she knows diddly about videocards yet claims that he/she has had trouble with ATI in past. I call bullshit; there is no logic behind this senseless fanboism. Either start approach a purchase rationally or spend more money for less. I recommend a ATI 5850, but since you obviously want to forego reason, I suggest you tri-sli 3 285's because watching someone waste $1000 because you refuse the intelligent path is just hilarious.

I agree...at this point, your only option, really, is to get an evga 4-way sli motherboards and 4x 285 classified cards. Also, you'll need at least 4 1500 watt PSUs.

I recommend a 5850 or 5750, I'm a nvidia fanboy, but with the prices on those cards lately, they look pretty nice, and I doubt the fermi cards will cost just as cheap as those ATi's, just nvidia's way of business because they are seemingly overconfident.

Seriously? ATI is simply better price/performance in almost every price range right now. However, if you like playing UTIII engine games like Mass Effect (2), Borderlands, etc, I'd go with an nvidia card. That's really the only reason I can see anyone really justifying an nvidia card right now.

But, things change. Last December I picked up the dreaded 192-core GTX260, for $180. Turns out that was a fantastic buy!

Going with a 512mb card right now is not wise.

Yes indeed, considering most of the games in the next months or so will take on 512MB + cards with Dx11 out, that card WOULD not be futureproof enough for you considering your going to play newer games and you would be crippled by the performance of that 9800gtx+ and make you upgrade a couple months down the road is as mentioned, not wise.

LOL the OP's absolute disregard for any constructive criticism makes me wonder why the hell he made this thread to begin with. No one even mentioned a 9800GTX.
