NV Roadmap Rumors

Tessaltion- Not much games utilize this yet and from the games I saw, it's nothing to brag about yet...

All DX11 cards have tessellation. Its a requirement. Southern Islands is supposed to greatly improve ATI's tessellation performance.

Right. Cause 3 monitors is somehow not a gimmick while 3D and PhysX are? Come on dude paint it with the same brush if you want to go that route.

Well, PhysX is a gimmick because nothing uses it.

3D could be seen as a gimmick and Eyefinity not if you don't like glasses. 3D also requires 120hz monitors, which aren't cheap.

Besides, with just basic Eyefinity you still have 3 monitors for desktop usage - which is awesome. People have been running dual and triple monitors for non-gaming purposes for many years now, so depending on what you have and what you want, I could see considering 3D and PhysX gimmicks while thinking Eyefinity isn't a gimmick.

Well these rumors and announcements are good for prices. Powercolor 5770 just dropped from $165 down to $150 locally today (Canada).

Though its now tempting to ride out a few months to see what happens on Nvidia's side. Although with the price points announced, still kinda disappointed nothing at the 200 USD mark, which is my preferred price point. (Previous 2 cards were the 8800gt and 6800gs). Seems like there will only be relatively low memory bandwidth parts unless you move up.

Really, I'm actually failing to see how any GF1xx or GT2xx derived chip or card is possibly going to be an effective gaming solution

Umm. How should I term what myself and millions of others have done with these cards then?

Just wondering, because it seems pretty damned effective to me.

Well, the problem is that Fermi will have to compete against ATI's new cards, and it will have to do so for a long time and with only a refresh to help it along.

With all the GTX 465 hate going around, have any of you guys been keeping up with the potential unlocks on some of the cards?

Here's a link to an article on Lab 501 (Romanian website) about unlocking shaders on a POV branded GTX 465 that actually includes a full set of memory chips (simply disabled in firmware).

GTX 465 Unlocking (Lab501)

Unlocked, plus a bit of an overclock, and you've got a good deal. Similar to the unlockable 9500Pro cards from ATI a few years back.

The big problem is finding suitable cards, as this looks to be sort of an isolated product. And it makes no economic sense for the manufacturer to continue building them in this way, perhaps aside from a bit of techy street cred (Gainward style).

Maybe if we're lucky, we'll get a downclocked GTX 465 or GTX 470 at the $200 price point. Find a vendor with fast memory chips, and BAM! Super value town. But it does look like nvidia is in trouble if they don't get their fab process scaled down, pronto.

Thats old news bud. http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1524483

Even a GTX470 owner that I am admits nVidia dropped the ball this time around. They are trying to make a profit on an unprofitable chip. They need Global Foundries and TSMC to get the next process out early as possible to get a die shrink, get a stable 512sp part out and shrink the rest of the cast period. And that seems to be out of reach till early next year.

Even if someone unlocks a 465, it is still not faster than a 5850 or a true 470. All you did was upgrade from a bad product to a mediocre one. More importantly, you can buy a full fledged 5850 for the same price as a 465 and with free shipping. There really is no point to the 465.

Yeah, that's why I was wondering why I hadn't seen anything about it on the front page. Even if it simply serves to show that the GTX 465 is a card that nobody has an interest in, short of very specific mods. But it does exist, and should at least get a passing mention.

If Nvidia priced the 465 in the same bracket as the 5830, it would be more attractive (marginally because both 5830 and 465 are mediocre products). The problem is they backed themselves into a corner because a GTX465 at the $200-230 price point would cannibalize the market for the upcoming mid range Fermi derivatives (GF104 et al).

This just seems to confirm that I should bite the bullet and grab a 5870 and pray I can adjust to ATI driver/visual settings after using NV for the last 5 years or so.

Very disappointed right now in NV. My last good ATI card was a 9700 and I loved that thing but the drivers gave me so much grief.

Its really not that bad, I had to adjust to the 5850 from the 8800GTS I had before, and there are some things I like better, like switching between monitors (I have my system connected to my 20" and a 32" TV for when the wife wants to watch hulu or whatever).

I have had no issues with the card besides some F'ed up textures with NFS Shift, and a reinstall of the game fixed that.

They don't even have surround working yet. We are @ over 3 months after launch where it was an advertised feature on marketing and even the boxes.

Surround is still not in the drivers.

actually they do have it, they have had it for years. maybe not with the consumer cards and DX# but openGL did work.

this seems more like they are trying to keep people paying large amounts of money for quadro pro cards for this feature.

It's practically game over for nvidia anyway as Intel and amd are moving the gpu to the cpu package. Nvidia can't do that. They're already obsolete.

All they can hope for is to make fermi a must needed graphics processing accelerator addin solution, and that depends on if developers will go ray traced gaming. Otherwise their only clients will be graphics studios. Let's see if they fuck it up like they did with making physix "closed" (for the literalists with no adding ability, meaning it only works when just an nvidia gpu is in the system).

Stop over reacting there Turbo!

Wow a company loses top spot for 1 maybe 2 generations and its not game over i'm sorry. AMD hadn't been top dog in the CPU business for about 5 years and they're still around. Nvidia had the GPU speed lead for about 6XXX - 7XXX - 8XXX series and guess what ... ATI/AMD didn't die.

It may not be "game over" by any means, but nVidia definitely has stumbled of late and if they want to maintain their dominance in the future they'd be wise to learn the 3dfx lesson before they travel all the way down that same path.

Sure, but ATI stumbled bad with the 2xxx series, and the X19xx was super hard to find iirc, and look at the turnaround they pulled off. Hard to believe the same company that missed its deadlines by months, produced a chip that was slower the competition, hotter, more power hungry, and more expensive (sound familiar? ;) ) is the same company that absolutely nailed the launch of not one but two generations of a *full lineup* of cards from budget to highend. ATI is now a perfect example of how to manage your product, and yet just a couple of years ago people were predicting the imminent death of ATI.

Right. Cause 3 monitors is somehow not a gimmick while 3D and PhysX are?

3 Monitors is a practical and useful thing beyond gaming. I am perfectly happy with the performance of 8800GT for the older games that I play.

But I want three outputs. My computer is in my living room, it drives my HDTV and an LCD on my desk. I want dual monitors on my desk but I can't because I only have two outputs on my graphics card.

My next graphics card will have triple outputs, and it looks like NVidia is completely out of the running.

3 monitor thing is about the only sore spot when it comes to the 400 series. I could of gotten, as pointed out on another thread, 5850, 2x 1680x1050 monitors and been playing Eyefinity for about ~$550 total. With Nvidia I would need a motherboard that supports SLI (which for me would mean new mobo, CPU and RAM ~$500), 2x 400 series ($600 at best, Dell for little under $300 a piece) and either 2 more monitors for 2D (~$200+) or 3 monitors that support 120hz for 3D (~$700+ at best).

Still I'm happy with my GTX470 and might even be upgrading to the GTX480. Mind you I'm about to spend another ~$600 for a 120hz monitor and 3D Vision Kit.

not to mention that they have other products. yeah they are sucking ass in the gpu department and likely to for a while. but tegra is actually starting to look up and their are some projects they have. and they are still sitting on a shitload of cash. so its not game over yet, more like they just realized that they are getting their asses kicked and scrambling to get up on their feet. I think they will get there.

Nvidia is a joke, I like their cards more due to drivers being better, but ati is spanking them a good one and honestly nv needs to get whooped on hard. Maybe they will actually try to make good, cool cards

"Following on the heals of Computex"
Should say:
"Following on the heels of Computex"

Unless computex is a priest who is casting healing spells.

Wow, can't believe I missed that one. Typo fixed.

Poor nVidia. It seems lately any new products are a waste of time and are only being brought to the market because of the money spent on them, and nothing else to bring out. They need to scrap the current line and work triple time on a new card. ATI has built their cards correctly. Even though this seems to be the way of the video card makers, one is awsome for about 2 product launches while other plays catchup, then the other is good for 2 and so forth. Market share gets lost, then made up then lost. So annoying. Just make good cards at good prices at reasonable power levels.

Hmmmm, built their cards correctly....does that mean not having the single fastest GPU?

Cause if I wanted max FPS I'd go triple SLi and I'd have the right that produced the most FPS.

And this is hardforum, so spare me that hippie heat and power bullshit.

Nvidia built a card. One that takes the FPS crown. So what exactly are you talking about?

Green turds indeed, the GTX 465 is weaker than an ATI 5830. Adn uses much more electricity and produces more heat and noise. The 460 is going to compete with what an ATI 5770? I am jsut waiting for ATI to release its upgrads the 5790 and 5890 series.... And 5990.... Wonder when we will these those minor updates.... Or how about a major price drop? :D

The only thing I miss from having an Nvidia card is nHancer. Other than that my XFX 5870 has been top notch replacing my GTX 295.

(Which replaced a 260 which replaced an 8800)

It has to be possible to make a similar program for ATI now that it has profiles. nHancer is a great program especially for sli setups.

Same here. Being able to force compatibility for certain games without having to rename the .exe is awesome, and is needed becasue Steam doesn't allow you rename the files. I also miss Nvidia's option to force AO through drivers when games don't natively support it. Really wish AMD would follow that path.

I'm loving my 5770 for htpc gaming. Good card at a price that couldn't be beat ($165)

However it does me no good for folding. I would love a fermi card that isn't a power sucking whore.

how about being able to make money? the only card I would buy in the fermi line is the GTX480 because its the fastest GPU you can buy. but it isn't all that much faster and a lot of cons. that tends to make all the mid range cards derived from it crap. you don't make money that way. I am looking forward to their new chip to make them competitive again on anything other then the fringe markets. would be nice if this turns out.

I updated another thread with this and wanted it here as well.

There is NO 485 as of now because that marketing name has not been established. There is a "GF110" on the roadmap beyond what we told you about last week slated for late Q410, but not much is known about it.

Let me tell you this plainly. All this 485 stuff was started with a BAD JOKE on a new "tech" website. This information is not true and is now getting regurgitated all over the Net by people that don't understand sarcasm. I just did my own sanity check and called NVIDIA. They laughed at the suggestion that a "soft" announcement had been made by an engineer.

True. I don't think they will fare well until they can get a new chip.

it just annoys me to here people spout off about how Nvidia sucks and has nothing. That's just straight up fanboy bullshit.

I had a 5870 and it was great. That doesn't mean I'm going start talking shit about Nvidia. I"m sitting here hoping they pop out a great card in a year or two.

Note: I think the 480 is a great card, but I'm not building a new gaming rig yet so that's why I said "in a year or two".

I get you, but as much as I hate to say it I kinda have been really put out with them lately so I do tend to come across as as being a red fan (though my last 3 cards were green). A LOT of that is their own making though. Lately it seems they just can't pull their head out of their ass. and that is on all fronts. chipgate, my non existent monitor EDID issue, trying to do everything on a massive chip, Their scam like advertising rules, their mindset about trying to make everything proprietary and so on. They are NOT winning a lot of friends here. And they either can't comprehend this or just don't care.

On the plus side tegra is looking like a neat solution, they have some cool notebook stuff out now (though that mobile 480 is a freaking joke, its going toast your nuts if you use it like a laptop), and they do have the fastest single gpu card. and I am hoping that they are in the process of stripping out all that GPGPU crap and will product a real gaming card here. I think it would kick ass. right now they still have the fastest single gpu with all that silicon bloat. it would be nice to see it without.

that is why kyles post is depressing, I was hoping for more on that road map. then again maybe they do have something up their sleeve

Any clues about what the GF110 is?
- does it sound like a 'big' chip - i.e. successor to the GF100 (maybe with GF104-style enhancements)
- or does it sound like a 'small' chip, following on from the GF108

- it seems to me that the GF108 is likely to be about as small as they'd want to go (just speculating)

I would imagine that it's a smaller chip. They need something that they can throw in a notebook and a low power mainstream card. They can't use G92 forever. GT200 and fermi don't fit that bill at all.

Latest rumour is the 460 is using a crippled chip:
http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/19199/1/

The full GF104 core would be more like a 475.

This makes sense for the dual chip card as well as it would seem that 2* 460 wouldn't be enough to beat a radeon 5970, but 2 * 475 might just manage it?

I'll listen to Charlie over Fudzilla any day of the week. Damn, I hate that website. I've seen more retarded BS spewing from them than anyone else. Intel's dual IGP springs to mind as a prime example..

As much as I initially thought EyeFinity was a gimmick, it's proven immensely useful with 3+ monitor setups, and I hope NVIDIA implements a similar feature, or creates a card specifically for that.

Nvidia announced "3d surround" but it's a big FAIL

Well if you want more then nvidia fail rumours you can't listen to Charlie, and fud has plenty of good rumours. Current one is that the GF104 architecture will scale both ways - i.e. they will do a 512 shader version, as well as all the smaller parts.
