NPD December 2009

My wife decided she wanted a Wii Fit (the advertising is working), so we were going to buy a Wii system with the Wii Fit and a few of the exercise games. Went to BB, Target and Wal-Mart; they were all sold out of Wii systems. Mind boggling how well that thing sells.

Yeah, I own all three consoles also. It just boggles the mind how the 360 still sells so well when the bundles were no where near as good as the PS3's.

lol, maybe its because sooo many people are buying multiple 360s. Like I am about to because my current 360 is starting to scratch Discs so far 2 in a row in the past 3 weeks I have played.

Wow, recently? Really? I haven't seen them out of stock since like September!

Yeah, no doubt just like so many bought multiple PS2's. Between the early consoles being complete garbage, and then later on when they really got cheap, buying multiples for different rooms in the house, they've sold a lot :)

This was today. Insane to me. I don't know if they are still just behind from Christmas or what, but I have seen it on shelves a million times before.

yeah that's shocking. I admittedly haven't been looking of late, but I didn't even see it out of stock locally (Orange, CA) during Christmas, so I'm surprised it's out now. I wonder if people who, for whatever reason, couldn't get one in December, put it off until January?

I know a couple of people that have bought a couple of 360s due to rrod.

I've only bought two, though because of the way it happened I've only spent a little less than the price of *one* :p.

Got my first 360 about 6 months after launch-died 89 days later. Sent it in, they sent me back a battered, scratched, dented console that worked for exactly 34 MINUTES before it RRoD'd.

Sent it back, they sent me another-which was DOA.

Sent that one back-this time they demanded the hard drive too-and waited. 2 months later they sent it back, sans hard drive.

After lots of bitching, somebody on this forum put me in touch with Larry Hryb, who not only sorted it out for me quicker than spit, but had them send me TWO hard drives. So I sold one for $80. By this point I was so pissed I just ebayed the console off--and somehow got only $20 less than retail out of it, officially putting me ahead.

A year later the falcons (if I recall) were coming out, and I found a deal on craigslist-dude was selling a working 360 with 9 games-6 of which I wanted but didn't own, the other 3 I did own-for $200. So I bought it, then turned it around the next day for $325. Took a couple days, hunted around for a falcon-and it's been running great ever since, probably 40 hours or more a week, all told (we use it for watching all our streaming netflix, plus dvd rips from a hard drive). All in all it's been great. Eventually most of the anger and frustration wore off, but still, it was a shit experience I should never have had to go through.

By way of comparison, on launch day I bought a Wii and *thought* it had a problem (blue light wasn't coming on when ejecting the disk, if I recall, which was by design) so I put in an RMA request the next morning and 24 hours later there was a brand new Wii sitting on my doorstep from UPS, along with a tag to send the other one back.

Now *that* is awesome customer service.

Wow, I thought the PS3 sales were going to curb stomp the 360 sales this December. I wonder what happened there?

Sony might need to come up with a new strategy it seems. A $100 price drop and new console, and this is all they could do? And now that it's already tapering off, they are going to struggle substantially in 2010 I am afraid. I don't think their dildo wand can fix this.

As for RROD, I know people that have also bought replacement PS3's for YLOD. They all do it.

Yawn.

I think you're forgetting about GoW3. :p Kratos would like a word with you :)

Heavy Rain and Modnation? They're going to be lucky to sell decent numbers, let alone push hardware.

Obviously GoW3 and GT5 are a different story.

GoW3 and GT5 are the big two for the year. Heavy Rain and Modnation are going to be pretty low in numbers. Heavy Rain only appeals to a small minority of gamers.

I replaced 2 360 consolese with jasper units and sent the originals in for free repair.

A little update to my Wii search. I went out yesterday and checked 4 stores. Not a single one had a Wii. Why people are still so enamored with this thing is beyond me. But I guess I am part of the problem since I am out looking to buy one... dang wife. :)

Well, being fair, the Wii has plenty of good games to warrant a purchase by this point. There's a lot of chuff, to be sure, but that's true of every console, every generation, and the more popular they are, the truer that is :).

I've owned a Wii since launch day and never regretted it for a second. I DID regret buying 360 early, and would DEFINITELY have regretted buying PS3 early considering how overpriced it was and how lackluster its first year or so worth of games was. I'd say Wii is a must own for any REAL gamer--as are 360 and PS3, ultimately.

Oh, I wasn't trying to knock the system. There are a few games that I would like to try out (after all these years, I am still a sucker for Mario :) ), but not really enough for me to take the plunge without prodding from the wife.

I was really just commenting on what is still a rabid fervor for the system. I mean, why in the hell can't I find one of these things YEARS after it has come out? It just boggles my mind. Clearly Nintendo knows what they are doing. If only I bought it pre-Wii. :)

It's bizarre, I was at Target today and they were also sold out of Wii's (I only looked because of your thread, LOL), and the clerk said they'd been selling out for the last month.

You're right, though, and it's undeniable at this point: Nintendo knows what they're doing, they've figured out something that both MS and Sony are still struggling to learn (hence the forthcoming PSThriimote and Project Natal).

I think Nintendo's victory this gen is pretty much sealed in concrete (and lined with gold), but I guess my real question is: how the hell do you follow up something that was, truly, a paradigm shift? And will they be able to do it? Will they even try or will they just take the Sony approach and just "evolve" the new paradigm? Good questions, no easy answers.

The PS3 is doomed.

Rumors state there could be a WiiHD around the corner. :p
