Well... it's worth mentioning that those Wii sales are far and away the best ever month's sales for a home console in the US. The best month the PS2 ever had was 2.7m.

This is something new, PS3 is out selling XBox 360 in the holiday season.

PS3's christmas sales almost doubled since last year. X360's went down.
Natal better come through big for them. Maybe we should hope it fails so they launch their next system sooner ? :D
Nintendo broke records and oddly it is irrelevant to me.

Man, the Wii numbers are ridiculous (hardware and software). I'm still amazed at how long some of those games, like Mario Kart, are STILL making this list.

Really shocked at the Wii sales, I figured the hundreds of crapware titles Nintendo allows out for the DS and Wii would eventually catch up to it...

And seriously everyone I know with a Wii has Wii Fit, Mario Kart, and owns or attempted to own New Mario Bros Wii (it was completely sold out around here for XMas). The adoption rate on some of these games is crazy.

you all should be pretty fit in the US right now!! unless you use the wii fit to weigh your recipes!!:p

its about time the ps3 outsold the 360 in the holiday season. MS cheaped out really by cutting out HD cables/ they need to bring out a slimmer model aswell instead of hammering out the same shit. im sure ms will mouth out dome software sales shit and ignore the hardware sales and nintendo sales in their holiday 2009 comments!!
all in all hats off to ms for software sales an banning those pirating fuckers!
hats off to sony for selling the ps3 cheaper whilst still losing money on it , keeping online gaming free! persevering with the psp, had some stellar games on the psp in the past few months!
hats off to nintendo in general, they have gone beyond money!!

The Wii makes the HD twins look rather pathetic this month.

Yeah I can't say I expected Wii to come in last or anything, but I am a little shocked that it managed to embarrass PS3 and 360 so badly as to have outsold them both *combined*.

I'm actually surprised PS3 only outsold 360 by a slim margin; the holiday PS3 bundles kicked ass, while the 360 bundles absolutely ate rancid nuts. I was really expecting PS3 to clobber 360 for December, but it really didn't.

What, you mean like the way the MOUNTAINS of shovelware caught up to PS1 and PS2? Oh wait, they never did :).

Generally speaking, having mountains of software-even if most of it is crap-is GOOD for console sales. Why? Simple perception: person walks into a store, sees a narrow selection of games for Console A, narrow selection for a console B, and then an entire WALL for Console C, the choice is obvious: buy console C, because it has a bigger library to choose from.

Now, we all know that quantity does not guarantee quality, but at the same time, if you throw enough darts at the board, eventually enough are gonna stick in the right places to get you a decent score. PS2's library is easily 80% garbage, but that other 20% is pure gold. Same was true for PS1. Same is true for Wii.

I don't really follow numbers so I may not be in-the-know-analyst-wanna-be, but after seeing november numbers it should be expected to be very close for december for both consoles.

Somehow, I don't really believe your clobber expectations, actually I heard a gasp of relief ;)

Look at worldwide sales. The PS3 has been kicking 360's ass ever since the last price cut.

And those sales figures are on top of its rampant piracy.

The power of popularity is mind blowing like hookers and blow.

where are the worldwide sales lists?

I just added the Japanese December Sales up 30th November 2009 - January 3rd 2010:
Wii: 813,352
PS3: 594,841
Xbox 360: 38,292
PSP: 475,515
PS2: 15492
Nintendo DS: 828,937

I just wanna know european sales so we can get a clearer picture of overall December totals!

LOL not at all. I truly *expected* PS3 to clobber 360 in December. As a matter of "in the box" stuff, it's just plain a better value, and the bundles with good games really underscored that fact. I had EXPECTED Microsoft to sweeten 360's value against PS3 with some great games bundle offers, but they never materialized.

Not exactly. Sure, they've been kicking ass in Japan, but that's business as usual. In the US they've remained on par, Europe had some spurts but nothing sustained. Another 360 price cut this spring should make up some adequate damage control, while a revised 360 with Natal bundle this winter could be their ace in the hole.

It's all speculative of course, who really knows? All I think anybody should be comfortable saying at this point, with 4 Christmas's as proof, is that next holiday, Wii will again smackdown the HD consoles. PS3 and 360 haven't a prayer-they lost, race is over.

There aren't any. We'll have the official updated numbers from Sony and MS at the end of January though.

Yeah, closest estimates are at VGChartz.com really, and even those aren't quite accurate. Latest official numbers from Sony and Microsoft (from just a few days ago) put PS3 at just over 30 million worldwide and 360 at 39 million worldwide. I'd wager that the majority of 360's lead is in the US.

Man they had that Lego bundle:p

I totaled it up from VG and it looks like this:

360@37.28m

PS3@31.82m

And the ass raper

Wii@65.58m

Yeah the Wii is effing nuts. Just barely shy of having outsold PS3 and 360 *combined*. It goes to show you how flawed the logic of "consumers will never tolerate outdated graphics on a new console" really is. Clearly, there are other things they're looking for.

I'm still surprised that PS3 is only really just pacing 360 in sales, though. They've made up a little ground, but it seems like each time they've made that ground up, MS has taken it back again. The slim has helped, but really, 360 is only a price cut away from taking that back again. I'm not really sure what to make of it at this point. In the beginning, it was obvious: PS3 was massively overpriced. What's the reasoning now?

I think it all comes down to MS releasing a year before the PS3, it was their ace in the hole. Obviously the 360 needed some more R&D time ala red ring but it worked for them.

And the insane price of the PS3 when it was released I'm sure didn't help matter's, hell I remember when I bought my 60gig at launch and I purchased a extra controller and Ridge Racer 7 and I was out almost 800 bucks:|

Jesus Christ. Yeah PS3 was just WAY overpriced at launch. I bet Sony won't do that again next gen :D

anyone know what the 360 worldwide sales were at the lifespan the ps3 is presently at?

The starting price of the Sony killed it for me. Many of my friends and I went with the xbox 360 after Sony released the PS3 (we were waiting to see the price and lineup). Neither of us owned a Xbox 1, but most of us had PS2s. Then when one person bought the xbox, they were able to try it, they purchased one, and etc. My friends and I are more social gamers, prefer to play multiplayer where possible, so the xbox became the platform for most of us.

Some of the PS3 games look interesting (exclusives), example the go-kart one, but outside of that it's hard for me to justify in another console for a handfull of games with none of my friends on that platform. It would just be another wii for me, wife got caught up in the hype, and just sits and collects dust.

I believe the Blu-ray was catch 22 for sony. It won the HD media war, but at the same time prevented them from reducing the price further (even if they wanted) to compete with other consoles because they would be undercutting many of the other stand alone blu-ray players (especially on release). It would be to the point why would another manufacturer want to sign on to making blu-ray players if they had less features

At least that was my reasoning. I'll probably do the same next console release in wait to see what they both offer, the price, see which direction my friends are going, and make a decision based on those results.

If you line up the launch dates. http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php

Here's how it's been since the last PS3 price cuts. http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?con...All&cons3=X360&reg3=All&start=40055&end=40188

Game over for the 360. It's destined for 3rd place, or 5th place if you count handhelds.

I don't think that's necessarily true at all. As of now, the 360 is somewhere between 5 and 9 million units ahead of PS3 (depending on who's numbers you believe; Sony says PS3 is at 30 million, Microsoft says 360 is at 39; meanwhile, VG charts shows 360 at 37 million and change, PS3 at 31 million and change, which means that overall, PS3 has actually *lost* ground since summer 2008, when it got to within 5 million units of 360).

From the evidence, 2nd place is FAR from decided. As far as first place goes, the race is over: Nintendo won.

Yeah I think all those factors you mentioned, plus others, ensured Sony's third place thus far. When will they catch up? Who knows, it's really hard to say. In summer of 2008 they got to within 5,000,000 units, and it seemed like they'd catch up pretty quickly inside of 2009. As of now, 360 is somewhere between 6 and 9 million ahead of PS3 (well, 5.55 million and 9 million, really), so PS3 has actually LOST ground worldwide since summer 2008, and gained somewhere between 1 and 4.45 million since it launched.

The curious thing is that, really, PS3 is, as a piece of hardware, a better value right now. Yes, 360 still has a bigger library and a far superior online service, but just as a matter of "in the box" stuff, you get way more for your money with a PS3. Why it is that it's only managing to hang neck and neck with 360 at this stage, I don't know.

What it DOES tell you, though, is that the race for second is far, FAR from over. People's claims of anyone being "destined for third" are massively premature and not at all supported by the numbers. It's still anybody's game, at least as far as the position of "distant second" goes.

Reminds me of that Sony slide...

8aex5sg.jpg

I bet they wish they were back in the PS2 glory days. Because the Wii is in exactly the same place the PS2 was when they showed that slide... and the Wii didn't get the headstart the PS2 did either.

Sony beats Microsoft in December, awesome. Truly the better system IMO with the better bundles.

I laugh when I read these threads though, always somebody talking about the PS3 and 360 and defending their system of choice and saying how slim the margins are. Doesn't matter, Sony did way better this holiday season and I feel they might be able to pick up some momentum.. I for one know a lot of my friends who used to be 360 gamers switch over to the PS3.

I haven't seen anybody in this thread "defending their console of choice", you're mistaken. As an owner of all three consoles, my console of choice is: All three consoles. As an observer to the console war, we have to go on numbers, and according to all the best numbers we have, both official and unofficial, the only team with a decisive victory is Nintendo. PS3 and 360 are neck and neck in monthly sales, which isn't exactly a recipe for one overpowering the other in the marketplace. No question PS3 had the better bundles; the question really is, why didn't those bundles matter more? I have no good answer.

On the bright side, it should be very entertaining to watch how 2010 unfolds :D
