Not getting -bigadv today.

I have turned in two -bigadv units this week with my new i7-930 that I set up last weekend, but ever since I turned in the second one this morning I have been getting much lower point units (P6065 for example). I also set up another system this afternoon, an i7-920, and the systems first unit was also very low points....

Is this just how it goes, or is there a reason for this? Is it fixable in any way?

You didn't change any settings? Are you running out of RAM? Using windows? If so, make sure the VM is set to 8 core CPU and plenty of RAM.

It's possible the server just isn't giving up the goods. I downloaded a bigadv on Wednesday, expect to finish tonight.

my guess is it ran out of WU's and is now throwing out A3 WU's to you.. their lower points but pretty fast WU's.. 9 hours tops for me on a phenom II 940 so id say probably 5 hours for you on the i7..

I see a mix of -bigadv units and A3 units being sent out here. I'd say you'llget another -bigadv after you run an A3 or two.

Okay, sounds like this just happens sometimes. I just wanted to confirm that since I really don't think it is an issue with my settings. I was just surprised I got 2 lower-point units in a row.

No, I didn't change anything, and I have plenty of RAM assigned (6GB assigned to VMware on one machine and 5GB on the other). I even double-checked everything and restarted VMware and now I am just waiting for the current unit to finish to see what happens next.

There's kind of a shortage with the CC in such high gear

I got an A3 yesterday on my sig rig. It picked up another Big Adv after it finished.

I ran 2 A3s on one of my bigadv rigs Thursday before it picked up another bigadv early yesterday. Another one grabbed a bigadv on Thursday no problem. I rarely see A3's on my rigs, but they do happen occasionally. You don't have anything set up incorrectly.

Hey guys, are they out of -bigadv work units again? My Linux SMP client just picked up a 6053 A3 work unit even though I have the -bigadv -smp 8 flags activated along with advmethods turned off.

It is hit and miss. I was getting 2 A3 units for every bigadv unit I would get through most of this week. My machine that uploaded a bigadv today got another bigadv first try.

I see, as I didn't realize that. I know that they had some major problems just a day or so ago, but I guess they must be running out of or running low on bigadv work units then. This is the first A3 my bigadv rig has ever gotten, so it had me concerned since I thought I must have messed something up.

Kinda sucks, since I like my Oreos doubled stuffed, and I like my work units to be bigadv! If I am gonna run A3, I would much rather just run it natively in windows............

The SMP1 bigadv project is starting to come to an end. Which is a good thing, A3 cores / Work Units are superior.
Read Dr Pande news blog for more details.

It is being worked one daily, and is the top priority to Stanford.

I will give more information when more details are available.

Ahh! thanks a lot for the info. So good to have our very own insider :)

Since the bigadv project is coming to an end, what I am going to do now is add the -oneunit flag and just switch over to Windows SMP for now since I hate running a VM if I am not going to need it.

There is another issue.

Earlier this week, and some of last there were assignment server problems.

I found out of 5 BigAdv rigs I have allocated to my team's Chimp Challenge, 3 of them had started getting A3 work units even though the -bigadv switch was set. 7im on the folding forum said that -bigadv takes precedence/priority over -advmethods or a null switch so I found this strange.

I then found a post where someone said that if you start getting A3 work units on your BigAdv do the following:

1) Restart the client with the -oneunit flag (my preference) or just stop the client and flush the queue.dat, FahCore_A3.exe files, and the "work" directory
2) Re-configure the client using ./fah6 -config (and the rest of the flags you normally type)
3) Go into advanced options by hitting return 5 times (don't change username/passkey etc...)
4) Go to the Machine ID entry and change it from 1 to another number

Leave the -bigadv switch in, and it should start getting BigAdv units again.

Might as well get as many as you can while they last.

Apparently once a Machine ID starts getting A3 work units, it may continue to do so, regardless of the -bigadv switch being set.

I did this and it worked for me.

Heh, after getting 2 straight A3 WU's overnight, it looks like my folding rig has finally managed to pull a bigadv 2683 work unit! It makes me happy again as once you go bigadv, you can't go back.

-bigadv will continue I'm sure, it will probably be in a slightly modified form (read A3 based and thus can run on windows with no VM).

Good grief, it's happening to me again. One of my VMs keep getting A3s and I've done everything short of dynamite to get a new bigadv to download. I'll try to be patient for now but I had to vent.

Evil did mention earlier in this thread that the A2 -bigadv projects are coming to an end. Perhaps they are running out of those WU's now that they are preparing to transition to doing A3 bigadv in windows????

My bigadv is getting ready to be done in the next hour or so, and i'm hoping it gets another bigadv as running A3 stuff in the VM kinda sucks.

Yeah I know but I still cringe when I get them.

I just picked up a bigadv just a little while ago. Did you get one?

I picked up a new -bigadv overnight, but It would not shock me if they are running thin on these if they are getting ready to make a switch.

Why make more WU for an old project?

:(:(:(

Damnit, my folding rig apparantly decided to pick up a 6052 A3 WU last night............

At least this is a smaller one and I hope it picks up a bigadv when it gets done.

I just picked up a bigadv this morning. I have another that will be completed later today, so I'll see what happens on that other machine.

woo-hoo!

That A3 unit is done and my unit has picked up another bigadv this time. A 2682 WU.

My clients are also picking up the occasional A3s. They finish and usually a -bigadv is sent after. Stanford is slowly phasing out the A2 -bigadv the way they were phasing out the A1 WUs a few months ago.

The fact that everything is going to a unified core (A3) is fine by me, but I do notice a, well, noticeable difference in performance for those units that run in the "LinuxRouter" VM image vs. in native in Windows.

On my i7 920 @ 3.9Ghz the A3 units average around 18,000 PPD in Windows SMP vs. 14,000 PPD in the Linux VM. This box has no GPU clients running on it currently.

The other reason that the A3 units are coming down to the BigAdv box is because they no longer require the -advmethods flag to run, as they are in general release. Since BigAdv specified NOT to use -advmethods it was almost a guarantee in the past that you would not get an A3, but that has changed as -advmethods is no longer req'd.

While the -bigadv flag takes precedence over no flag or -advmethods flag, if it's set, your box will first try BigAdv A2 units, and then A3 units. It will do whatever's available.

I think in the future I'll just be running WinSMP on my former BigAdv boxes and only leave one with the LinuxRouter VM image. This saves RAM (yay) but loses points (boo).

Right now, out of my 5 BigAdv capable boxes, three are running A2 BigADVs and 2 are running A3s.

That's just the way it is, really. SMP2 is optimized for Windows, A3's are optimized for SMP2 and therefore Windows. (as far as I can tell/what I remember)

My primary finished an A2 this morning and has churned an A3 since. My other boxen is almost done with an A2, obviously IDK yet what it will pick up.

If A2's are scarce it sucks yeah from a PPD stand but then again that just means that -bigadv coming to A3 will happen very soon and that makes me happy because I'd rather dump the VM's and (occasional) instability and just run the Win clients because they run like tanks and I've never had a Win client flush a WU at any point % wise. ;)

In the future, A3 -bigadv will be available and this will all be a non-issue.

My primary finished the a3 and picked up another a3.
Meh, don't bother me much. ;) Points is points. :D
could always be worse  could be an a1

Care to share any more inside secrets with us? I'm dying to know what is coming up with F@H. We are on the same team, you gotta at least spill some beans :)

He can't say anything.

I might suggest checking his personal stats page though. That is public info.

Yeah I know, but I sure would like to know what the PG are up to for the future of folding. I really can't wait to finally ditch this VM most of us are running.

Interesting...all of my A3 machines except one, downloaded that newer 2.19 client version yesterday or the day before. I recall seeing a core out of date message but didn't think anything of it.
