So this is my Nintendo XP. Looking for thoughts, suggestions, feedback in general. First pic is the front with the lid up... notice the slim, slot DVD burner! That's also a 1GB stick of corsair visible inside the case, below the dvd..

Next pic is the back... the other similar projects I've seen all use the "hack it to bits" technique of i/o panel installation (i.e. cut out the specific holes you need instead of installing an actual plate.) Personally, I think using the plate gives it a much cleaner look. Too bad the plate was just a little too big (bottom left side). Hardly noticable upon first glance, though...

Finally... this is the 'i can hack the psu if i wanna' pic. using a sata power adapter took too much case room, so i removed a 4-pin and soldered in the sata power.

So that's all the pics for now, but the system goes like this:
VIA EPIA SP-13000 mainboard
1GB corsair ram
80 GB fujitsu 2.5" sata hdd
slim, slot dvd burner by pioneer
200w power supply via audioforge.com
XP MCE 05

still in progress... currently am waiting for usb port parts. part of the fun will be modding the original controller port from the INSIDE of the case to act as a usb port (already have this part, just waiting on cables - retrousb.com) + a joystick to mouse emulator... so I'll have an original, unmodded NES controller that I can use as the mouse! also, usb stuffs will include internal 802.11g and bluetooth.

thanks for your comments! more pics to come as more work gets done!

more pictures!

this is the inside view from above...

the wiring is obviously not final yet... mostly just trying to prove to myself what I can and can't do...
here's the top half of the case with the dvd and hdd...
img00135or.jpg

the wiring job for interior usb ports and from the nes controller port to the usb header (not entirely pictured)
img00160fi.jpg

here's the little piece that converts the nes port to a usb port... no drivers needed, just plug in the controller and xp sees a usb gamepad! (sorry this one's a little blurry)
img00193xp.jpg

and finally, a quickie of the power supply...
img00203ls.jpg

in many of these pics, you can see the other components, too... i.e. the g adapter... i'm still deciding if this is going to be for home or vehicle use... if it stays at home, the second inside usb will have a micro receiver for a gyration keyboard/mouse, if it goes to the truck, it will be a bluetooth receiver for phone/keyboard/mouse connections...

to save you the time of scrolling through for my random updates: yes the controller port works... the nes controller also functions as a mouse via Joy2Key software emulation. a little strange, but fun nonetheless. hope you enjoyed it. screen shots pending...

joe.

actually, yes... i just downloaded an nes emulator and the super mario rom last night...

Awesome project, but yes please more pictures dont leave us like this :D

Wow! looks real good from the others I've seen. Some I've seen the lid don't fit properly cause of all the stuff. You made this look nice Good Job :)

Good lord I just read what I wrote. Maybe next time I will miss a few more keys when I type.

Sorry about that.

Thats a great mod, more pics please.

And to the guy asking for a roms link, read the forum rules.

but here is the real question do the power and reset buttons actually function as power and restart?

Great work so far, not the most original mod, but always fun to see.

looks pretty good. the ram looks odd there, but easily acessable. to bad not enough room to make it popup like the cartridges used to. prolly keep any thiefs away though as its looking so old. cool stuff.

You might be able to make a plastic piece to cover the RAM and hide it. That would look neat.

Agreed. I think that would improve on the overall look.

But it's very nice work! I love it... very clean and well done. More inside pics would be very neat though!

Atleast give us some specs! Some more pics would be nice on the side also...

Also, consider getting an nes to usb adapter, so you could wire the controller ports on the front up so that they actually work!

Controller--------------Front port----sodered nes convertor cable----usb port----front usb convertor cable---mobo

I know it would be something that I would be willing to try, and it certainly would be an easy visual pwnage! I think the cable would cost like 10 bucks too.

EDIT: ahhh...i can't find the link to the convertor cable anymore...arg

about the gaping hole that allows you to see the ram: currently it is covered by a piece of metal flashing that i cut to size and covered in black electrical tape, also there's an led for hdd activity in it, very temporary... the plastic piece idea is actually the end goal, but may prove harder than most of the project...

about the power, reset, and power led... yes they function as power, reset and power led! the led is even the original nes led!

about the controller ports.. i already have teh piece from retrousb.com, and am currently waiting for the arrival of bunches of usb to mobo adapters that were ordered recently...

about the significant lack of pictures.. well, i've spent all my money on this thing and didn't have any left over to get a digital camera, so i have to borrow mom's when i can, which unfortunately isn't very often... any of you who live in austin / san marcos, tx area can pm me if you would like to donate your camera and an afternoon for a photo shoot!

thanks for looking and for the great suggestions! keep checking back for more updates!

Do you have to blow on it and wiggle it around to get it to boot?

I just look at it and think....

UP DOWN UP DOWN B A B A........ :p

^^ hahah, thats money

nice mod man, I dig it.

proc is a via c3 @ 1.33ghz
dvd is indeed a laptop part... so is the 80gb sata hdd.

THE CONTROLLER WORKS! I can't begin to tell you how strange it feels to navigate XP using an NES controller instead of a mouse... frakking cool. Also feels EXACTLY like the real thing when used as a gamepad w/ nes emulator! wanna try it?

www.retrousb.com -- for the nes to usb part...
www.electracode.com/4/joy2key/JoyToKey%20English%20Version.htm -- for the mouse/keyboard emulation via joystick.

promise more pics are coming! i still need ideas for how exactly to get a plastic piece that'll fit the opening under the dvd... thanks for looking!

(also will try to post links for the parts places with next batch of pics)
joe.

my nintendo is used now as my htpc :)

Man, that sounds like an awesome idea. I JUST sold all my old video game systems. Now i might have to find an old NES on ebay or something.

Best NES mod I've ever seen!

The only other thing I would've seen in a machine like this is a catridge dumper so that you could actually plug in a NES catridge and dump it do the built in computer and then play it on your NES emulator. But, I guess there isn't enough room. Not with that DVD burner in there.

actually i saw someone mod the gold zelda cartridge, and use half of the case of the game as a face plate for their cd rom drive in their nintendo, and worked!

where do you plug in the power? anyways..GREAT job...my wife as an NES in our closet...maybe she will let me mod it like this....ummmmm....let the begging begin :)

WASSON! man, ive seen you on tv and your the main man!! i used to be on those forums :( :( :(
i really miss it
you should open up another site about nintendo mods only.

http://www.mavrinac.com/projects/nesclock/
